I like how because this is Carmack, this is somehow different.
doom with a story would suck
Oh really? How would we know because it ain't never going to happen now.
Also, I find it odd the way Carmack (Whom IMO ran ID into the ground not too different from the way Bobby Kotick ran Activision into the ground)
uh I'm pretty sure romero ran ID into the ground, dude
see: quake 1, daikatana
uh I'm pretty sure romero ran ID into the ground, dude
The both of them did actually.
Doom 3
all i wanted was to break and burn shit, they had to do a whole story line behind it
Well, he's a businessman, what do you expect? His first and main goal is making the video game profitable. Not saying I approve of it, but it's what they do.
IMO Carmack is just basically what Kotick would be like if he was a developer, and not a guy who sits behind the money printer (Oh wait that's Robert "STELTH CLOWN OLOLOLOLOL" Bowling).
The both of them did actually.
how the fuck did john carmack run id into the ground, what are you smoking
Doom 3
all i wanted was to break and burn shit, they had to do a whole story line behind it
And from my own experience I welcomed it.
IMO Carmack is just basically what Kotick would be like if he was a developer.
that's a shitty opinion
IMO Carmack is just basically what Kotick would be like if he was a developer
how do you even come to that conclusion
And from my own experience I welcomed it.
no-one did
no-one did
Why not? Because you wanted the same thing again?
So I guess in the end it really comes the gamer and from the arguments I've gathered, depending on the game you either just want to blow shit up or have an engrossing story. When a game that used to be just about killing tries to attach a story to it its bad.
It was bound to happen though since there were novels written for Doom.
carmack is absolutely right about equating the idea of a storyline in doom to a storyline in porn. nobody plays games like doom for the story, they play them to blow shit up. nobody watches porn for the story, they watch it to blow a load
Why not? Because you wanted the same thing again?
no i wanted a game that cared more about gameplay than storyline
I'm going to hate being a game designer, aren't I?
no i wanted a game that cared more about gameplay than storyline
Was the gameplay bad?
Doom 3
all i wanted was to break and burn shit, they had to do a whole story line behind it
The problem with this generation of gamers is that they are unappreciative of a good story, and only want to randomly shoot shit. I laugh whenever I get a friend to play a JRPG or any pre MGS2 Metal Gear game, and they get owned by bosses because they didn't have the patience to watch cutscenes to determine the boss' weakness.
What would MGS4, or Heavy Rain be with out a story?
I find it funny that Carmack didn't want a story in DOOM, even though Wolf3d had a decent one, even if it was barely explained, and good ole' RTCW was pretty awesome in the fact that it made it better, and more historically accurate.
Was the gameplay bad?
yeah kind of
carmack is absolutely right about equating the idea of a storyline in doom to a storyline in porn. nobody plays games like doom for the story, they play them to blow shit up. nobody watches porn for the story, they watch it to blow a load
if i wanted a good story i wouldn't play videogames, i'd read a book
games are centuries away from having anything close to a good story
Actually, he's their lead programmer. I don't know where he is with the business end.
As Co-founder he has a stake in id I think. Lead programmer, Technical Director, or what ever would still mean he's in their hierarchy in other ways too, for example Bill Gates was technically "Chief Software Architect" of Microsoft until recently in 2006.

So, don't work on it at all is basically what you're saying.
Wow, that's actually backwards thinking on your part.

By that logic he should've been able to stop Romero.
all romero did was slack off and blow money on stupid shit. he basically tore ID apart during the quake 1 project
The problem with this generation of gamers is that they are unappreciative of a good story,
which generation of gamers? i'm older than you and i can assure you game story-lines have always sucked.
and only want to randomly shoot shit. I laugh whenever I get a friend to play a JRPG or any pre MGS2 Metal Gear game, and they get owned by bosses because they didn't have the patience to watch cutscenes to determine the boss' weakness.
i skip through cut-scenes as well, they're usually very bad
in the 90's MGS was an exception but not anymore, no
What would MGS4, or Heavy Rain be with out a story?
1st one would be 30 minutes of gameplay, second one would be quick time events
I find it funny that Carmack didn't want a story in DOOM, even though Wolf3d had a decent one, even if it was barely explained, and good ole' RTCW was pretty awesome in the fact that it made it better, and more historically accurate.
Wolfenstein didn't have a decent storyline at all. they were excuses to get you across the world.
By that logic he should've been able to stop Romero.
What did Romero do bad other than Diakatana? IIRC, if it were not for him we probably wouldn't have had Deus Ex.
So, don't work on it at all is basically what you're saying.
yeah you don't work on it by adding in an arbitrary story.
you can pretend to work on it all you care, but no-one's likely to like it on that merit.
By that logic he should've been able to stop Romero.
he did, romero was fired after Quake 1
What did Romero do bad other than Diakatana? IIRC, if it were not for him we probably wouldn't have had Deus Ex.
Oh I know.
They're generalizing at this point and its hilarious.
MGS4 was 10 minutes of bland gameplay with 4 hours of hammy, awkward animu cutscenes. how that game got good reviews is incomprehensible
yeah you don't work on it by adding in an arbitrary story.

he did, romero was fired after Quake 1
So I'm the only one who actually liked Doom being explained? Cool.
What did Romero do bad other than Diakatana? IIRC, if it were not for him we probably wouldn't have had Deus Ex.
he didn't really do anything
So I'm the only one who actually liked Doom being explained? Cool.
here's an explanation of Doom
you're in space and there are demons who are zombies who you kill to win the game
So I'm the only one who actually liked Doom being explained? Cool.
have you ever played Doom 3?
it's not Mass Effect, which even for its mediocre storyline is still the cream of the crop when it comes to videogames
By that logic he should've been able to stop Romero.
Not all companies have a single, powerful positions and have one person able to overturn everything, though working in groups they can force troublesome employees off at some point. All I'm saying is Cormick has an interest in the financial health and profitability of his business, which is why he would be defensive against comments directed towards his kinds of companies.
