But that would kill competition, according to the nation's leading service providers! That's why they're fighting so hard to roadblock Google with legislation preventing them from expanding their network, you see?
Please ignore the fact that 97.6% of Americans have access to, at most, two service providers for high speed internet (25mb/s and above). This is a healthy market, damnit.
Hey, I've got 3 shitty options! I'm in the top 3 percent!
Rogers is the cancer of internet service in toronto.
Arguable WORSE than comcast.
PLEASE come to canada!
You mean, "Let's just roll out our still-experimental infrastructure to a giant city for billions upon billions of dollars instead of taking smaller steps to make sure we don't fuck ourselves over in the long run."
Well fuck it then, bring it to Elgin, Il, Its about 40 miles west of Chicago, and where I currently live.
I live just a few miles from Atlanta in a suburb city. So fucking close. ;-;
Still no fiber in the Bellevue/Seattle area. You would think in an area with big companies such as Valve, Bungie, Nintendo, and Microsoft, we would have Google Fiber ages ago.

Competition is good. It's just that when people constrict the market for their own greedy reasons that things go to shit.

I agree completely. The point I'm trying to make is that these mega-monopoly service providers are effectively shutting out all competition, even going so far as as to lobby for laws that prevent real potential competitors from taking root using the amusingly hypocritical argument that they're trying to protect the spirit of competition.
Companies like Charter are arguing that Google wanting to come in and provide a vastly superior network and infrastructure at the same price range to consumers is unfair, because Charter doesn't want to cut into their profit margins by having to upgrade their own infrastructure to compete. To then, in the same breath, give impassioned speeches about the beauty of a free market with open competition, espousing ideals of innovation and progress? Spare me!

Greed ruins lives.
It's good that Google is continuing to build it's fiber network. But I have a feeling that this could be sped up faster if the government got behind this as well.
Considering the actions of agencies like the DEA and NSA, I'm not sure if I agree with this.
This is so exciting, I love seeing the progress of this. I seriously hope they start hopping the border in the next couple of generations of service, I mean look at this map:

They started at only Kansas City and the project trials only began in 2011, so it's really starting to spread out quick now.
With Salt Lake and San Antonio, will the two be connected to Provo and Austin, respectively?
Also UK pls
I live in Humboldt County, California. I pay $40 a month for 3mpbs down. Fuck living in environmentally stunning but isolated areas.
Come to New Jersey please.
I'll take off my left leg in a tribal ritual to get it over here so we can get rid of Verizon and Comcast.
I live on Charlotte/go to school at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte - WOOH, so excited for this.
It's bittersweet, Google has been mildly anti-competitive in considering where to deploy.
Currently, ISP's don't have to worry too much because they continue to make money from customers who have no choice but to pick one of them. Fiber gives an alternate choice in the areas it's deployed, and forces these companies to provide good service or lose money.
come to brazil
Come in Louisiana? Bah, I feel like we'd be the last fucking backwater to get good internets.
Would love to escape the shitty bandwidth limit and pricings of Suddenlink...
melbourne when
melbourne when
never seems accurate

I can only account for the Salt Lake area fiber. Utah state has a government initiative called UTOPIA, they've been rolling fiber out to cities that "join" the group, the cities have to pay for the fiber OFC; but once they do it becomes municipal fiber.
That means in utah cities with UTOPIA, there are anywhere from 9 to 20 fiber internet providers.
My point is that Google has been anti-competitive in the area, they've stymied talks for SLC to get UTOPIA, they've been asking for a ton of city taxes and land fees to be waived. All of these things that normally the city would say "take a hike" to. But because google they're getting preferential treatment. I'd rather have google than Cmcst and ctl, but I would much rather have an open municipal fiber deployment.
The only reason Google deployed in Provo, was because they could buy up the dying iProvo network for $1. Granted they upgraded the network to working order, but there's still only a monopoly of 3 or so companies, as compared to UTOPIA cities with a ton more competition.
I think cities shouldn't make deals with Google, but rather start allocating funds to municipal fiber networks, this would allow a much better competition between ISPs.
I'm so excited. My neighborhood has been accepted and they plan to cover my entire area code. I'm getting google fiber!
Come on with Jacksonville! We've got a ton of people! Way more than some other cities.
jacksonville doesnt give a fuck about anything new and innovative
thats probably why they arnt even on the potential cities list
it makes me angry.
what makes it even worse is that comcast just unveiled a 505Mbps service for 400$ a month in jax.
i mean really what the fuck
That's a scam for sure. No way anyone in their right minds would purchase 505mbps for 400 a month, they might as well use that cash to go move to a Google Fiber area.
I can't wait for that package to have 0 customers on it for a few months and then Comcast just drop it.
its worth it for the free norton
