I guess it is a lot cheaper.
The air force is always doing cool shit with technology.
I think it was the iraq, korea or china that pioneered the method of using game consoles for super computers.
If i remember correctly they did it with the PS2s and the country was banned from buying computers or any other things like that which could have been used for the whatever purpose they needed the supercomputer.
Anyway I think it's more of a question what for you need a super computer than a question of how many ghz you need to do some task.
I mean super computers aren't that fast. But when used correctly they can be very powerful.
i smell a bad marketing shceme

That's because this was posted long time ago.
l8 m8.
That is pretty neat.
No, they've reduced production costs by a lot since they started making them. I'm guessing Sony made a pretty good profit off of the airforce.
They've reduced production cost on them, yes, but the regular PS3s are still being sold at a quite a large loss.
The PS3 Slim is the one that is now the closest to being sold at a profit, but Sony is still losing like $35 on them, and the ones the Air Force bought are not the Slim version.
And they'll get even more power out of them with GPU acceleration.
Oh wait, closed platform, can't use the GPU on Linux, ahahahaha.
But yeah, Sony is losing money when people do this.
They should be playing Heavy Rain, really get them babies workin'.

Good thing it's the US Air Force.
Why is the USAF spending their valuable time doing this pointless shit when they can bomb Iraq?
Because they got donated a ton of LittleBigPlanet copies?
Next thing we know every briefing room will have a repurposed Wii.

what the fuck why are they spending that much to play warhawk
I hope the US realizes that Sony is a Asian company.
North Korea is gonna invade Sony HQ just for these.
because they have a sense of humor and a semi-legit reason and because bombing iraq doesn't do anything, idiot
you're implying that they're not allowed to do anything but literally focus all effort into an ineffective and costly american method of dealing with other countries, just so you can try to find something wrong to make a retarded joke
Everytime a see an Iraqi village on T.V. get bombed, I get a huge boner. This goes for all Americans with penises. So I'll have you know that bombing Iraq is highly gratifying and very much worth our time
American method of dealing with other nations is superior. We will shit our bombs on you next
I don't know could they just order the processors on their own instead of ordering PS3 which include casing, blu-ray drives and a HDD. They only need the processor, right?
Playstation 3: It really does everything.
Except play PS2 games
(well the new ones don't)
the only downside to this is that they'll need to change them for the next generation or they won't look cool.
Maybe this could run Crysis 2 on 60 fps
