In other words, if you are building stuff with spawned in items your server isn't true vanilla.
I think what Garry was saying is that if you're doing things like creating arenas, your server isn't vanilla. Not "if you spawn anything in then your server isn't vanilla". But whatever -- couldn't care less. I spawn stuff in all the time. It doesn't bother me if my players know this, because they also know that rule #1 is I don't get involved. I'm there to build structures (which are always empty, a fact I make well-known), kick off spammers / hackers / sploiters, and answer questions about how the game works ("how do I get wood?" "can you research supply signals?" "how is babby formed?"). The spectate command also gives me a kick-ass view of raids, though spectate isn't as good as it used to be. Worst-case scenario, the spawn log is MAYBE mildly annoying. Best-case scenario, the players get some transparency. I'll be happy if they can find a way to trim down the chat spam, but it's not exactly a pressing issue.
I'm part of an admin team on a busy server. We welcome the change as it lets us actually play. Edit: Vanilla as defined by the creator of the game: - Garry, Devblog 94 In other words, if you are building stuff with spawned in items your server isn't true vanilla.
Vanilla, as defined by the software industry:
Computer software, and sometimes also other computing-related systems like computer hardware or algorithms, is called vanilla when not customized from its original form, meaning that it is used without any customizations or updates applied to it.[1] Vanilla software can become a widespread de facto industry standard, widely used by businesses and individuals.
It's not the first time garry clumsily made shit up to try to prove his point. Perhaps he should remove the admin spawn altogether because they're using it wrong.
Vanilla, as defined by WIKIPEDIA.
yeah, but with english being a living language, meanings regularly shift and morph. i think it' safe to assume that he means unmodded servers in general when he refers to "vanilla" servers. the rest is just window dressing and semantics.

Transparency is great when you aren't hiding what you are up to! I just find it super fishy how people are complaining about this. Admin abuse does happen, but at least this way we can keep it in the modded tab!
If I put chocolatechips on my vanilla icecream its not longer vanilla.
