Decay in this game happens way too fast. I gave the game another chance right before it launched on Steam, and in 2 days made a huge house. I had school and work the next day so I didn't get to play, I come back and my house and everything in it was gone. Literally maybe 37 hours or so. This is too quick. People complain about there being too many little kids, it is because, you have people like me who have to work and if I go to work and come back to Rust and have no home, then I don't even want to waste my time with the game. Not everyone can play everyday. I am 18 years old, I have a job and I have class, I can't keep rebuilding my house every damn day. Please fix this or this game will be just a bunch of prepubescent 15 and younger kids playing because people who have jobs can't play.
I love Rust so I am not talking down on the game. Don't tell me the game is in alpha or beta or in development or whatever, I don't care. They have tweaked decay before and it was no issue. Please fix this, I am sure I am not the only one so If you have experienced this comment below so the devs will realize this needs to be fixed.
at least from what the wiki has stated;
decay starts from the top and works down, so building a little above your structure will improve it's life.
also you can repair structures by right clicking with the associated material. (wood/metal)
:eng101:
edit: also note there has been 2-3 wipes since release on steam.
u cant repair fundations and pillars

That still doesn't help the guy who is at work and class all day. I don't even think you read the post did you? I am at work all day hence I can't come home to get on Rust and repair the house, that means the house disappears because of decay. That means I come home to nothing. That means I can't repair nothing. Dude. learn to read before you reply.

Reply to your edit. If you read, once again and clearly you didn't. I said right before the launch on Steam. There was no wipe. i know this because I had all my shit.
Thats almost impossible, are you sure the world whipe didnt remove your house ? did you built the house after or before the whipe ?

from my experience, a house does not decay in a single day. (in fact, the structure i've had up for the last 3 days is still standing fine.)
unless you're building a wood shelter or a house of barricades, this shouldn't have happened.
edit:
it should also be noted there was a server wipe, but not an inventory wipe, shortly before transition in to steam.(2-3 days beforehand)
it caused me a bit of a headache, as it made me believe inventory and learned recipes would become accountbound instead of serverside.
Decay is fine to stop it all you need to do is log into your char and open a door use a campfire and it resets well thats from my understanding that takes 2-3 mins max.
I understand people have busy lives but if you want to keep your building then thats what you need to do.
3 Friend´s Houses decayed, in 30 hours more less this last weekend. 1 House completed disapeared (Foundation and Pillars too), others 2 just left the foundation and 4 pillars in one, and 2 pillars in the other. We constructed our houses after the steam release, and the last wipe at MCM US 1. All together, my house was fine, but the other 3... poof.
I really think the decay time is very fast too, and there is nothing to us to control it, like something to check the "life" of the structure without spend a material.
Not everyone can play everyday.
Unfortunately that's just how rust is meant to be played at the moment. It's one of the most "hardcore" survival games out there. If you aren't in a clan/have active friends to play with the game is just unforgiving and even unfair. Even if you manage to play 4-5 hours a day , if a huge group comes to your house that has tons of C4 and fully geared people there NOTHING you can do to defend your house.
I agree on decay being a little too fast. But in the time you're not playing , while your house decays you have a lot of chance to get raided. There is hope tho; Static defenses for bases have been confirmed , not sure how this is going to help you defend from really active clans/groups but hey it's a start.

If you aren't active enough to come on the game for 5 min every two days and repair your things then you shouldn't be playing this game.
pretty sure you got bumfucked by c4 dupers or a wipe, if you had a huge house it wouldn't have disappeared in that time. a one square house, sure, that might've decayed.
only a coupe of days ago there was a dupe patch, don't know how long it was ingame before that though.
Yah this game will be super hardcore when there are only 10 year olds left playing because people have jobs. And yah a house will decay in like 30-40 hours which is retarded. This needs to be fixed.
[editline]5th November 2013[/editline]
Also there was no wipe. My neighbors house was still in tact and I had all my stuff. Stop saying their was a wipe. There wasn't.
yhea sometimes i have that too
1 day no playing and poff house is gone

There has been two wipes since Rust went to steam.

False , there was a wipe 3 days ago when the game was allready on steam.
Thanks to all the guys that reported the latest Dupe exploit (which involved crashing the client and rejoining - then killing your previous self and taking their stuff).
This bug is should now be fixed serverside - and the servers have been wiped to undo any effects of the exploit.
Broseph, the house decays over two IRL days. Calm the fuck down. If you can't play in a 48 hour period, then you're fucked in that regard. Takes literally 2 minutes to spam wood all over your house to repair it.

Alright swagmaster faggot. Have fun when the game is left with just ten year olds because all the adults who played Rust quit because the house kept disappearing.

Thinking about this from a server stability standpoint, I think it's fine as is. If the structures stayed longer, the whole map would be cluttered, which would most likely strain the server even more then it already is with the chaos that ensues on it.
They did wipe the server do to dupe cheaters, but yes we had a neighbor whos house literally decayed over a day and a half. No one raided it or C4'd his place. He built it friday not, spent saterday in RL and we all watched his house literally fall apart in front of us. Sunday he came back to pillars and foundation. All walls toast.
If you have a friend that lives next to you, just build an extra door onto the house and have him open and close it once a day, problem solved.

I am not saying to keep it forever. I am saying to extend it longer than 30 hours.

I don't see how me saying I am an adult who has a job is raging. But okay. These dumbass kids need to read the post before replying.
The problem isn't that things decay too fast, it's that it's all a mystery and very unclear, and the repair mechanic is very finicky to say the least. Some walls I can repair, where others I can't seem to target to do so. Same with doors and metal shards.
An easy solution, and this is most likely probably already planned (it is alpha afterall), every building piece in the world (like doors) should have ownership, and when you look at the door, wall, crate, etc, it should show health next to the circle along with current health, with the option to repair as is done now (and have it actually work all the time)

That would be nice. But my issue still stands.. I have a job and I am not home to repair my home. Sometimes I am away from my computer a day or so at a time. I think 3 Real time days seems fair for decay.

True, but only once it's understood and illustrated how to upkeep a house could a fair time to decay be established.

I have 42 years, a job, a wife, kids, I play alone and I have no problems to connect 5 minutes every days to stop decay !
You don't work 24hours/24hours...
It's not a game for casual gamers !
Remember, you're testing, not playing. Losing your base after not testing for 24 hours is a good punishment.
