If you want to be more effective as a new spawn, get a hatchet? They're like 20 metal and 10 wood, which is next to nothing in resources, it's not much of a change, just making the game more realistic.
I tried again as a fresh spawn with the rock.
Good lord that's difficult on a full server. I never got past the hatchet stage.

It could be more damaging and speedy. I don't know about you, but I think I could effectively ruin somebody's skull with a rock that big [I]and[/I] swing it faster.
Actually instead of spawning with a rock, the player has to go and find rocks. Because you know,
there is fucking rocks and boulders everywhere.
Anyone think it would be cool if you could melt down the rock for metal ( just enough for a hatchet)- Might have suicide duping issues though.
I personally think you should have more then rock, flare and bandage. As a newbie I have found the last couple of days playing the game frustrating mostly because of the players. I think 5 cook meat should be added as I have spawned into areas where I can't get food due to wolfs and been trying to build a base.
Maybe even a sleeping bag and shelter so when you do start you have more of a fighting chance.
If you have a microphone I've found it extremely easy to find a new group and not get KoS'd.
I've done perfectly fine with just a rock. Starting off is a little harder, but that's kind of the point.
Sadly for me it has not been the case as soon as I get to the point in order to start off then I die for numerous reason and been friendly has not got me that far.
Shelter maybe too much but I do think food would help as it would be one starting item I don't need to find as soon as I spawn.
Every time I through the rock out of my inventory into storage, or through it out because I don't want it, then log out for the night - log back in the next day I get a new rock! I don't want the thing.
It's good! A hatchet would be to good start item!
