Well I just bought DayZ...
Thought I'd never do that since I am totally uninterested in zombie fiction. But I liked the Arma series with their open world + decent ballistic physics etc.
After an hour of playing I can say with certainty, DayZ has much more annoying glitches than Rust.
Upon booting up for the first time, The mouse cursor only updates its visible position when you click a button making the menus almost non functional LOL couldn't even start a game... looked on forums and found the only workaround is... to run in windowed mode x)
But it looks pretty cool :) I'm sure I'll have some fun with it.
Never happened to me. Zombies run through buildings though lol.
I would have bought DayZ if they supported macs :(
I could be wrong but as far as I know Macs only support Photoshop, World of Warcraft, games that were released 10 years ago and sitting in a coffee shop while you're writing your movie script/novel so everyone in the coffee shop can see that you're writing your movie script/novel.
Rust and DayZ are both great games. They've both made a buttload of money. Both developers have expressed mutual admiration for each other. Both games still have a lot of bugs and still need a lot of work.
As far as gameplay they are of course two very different games. That's been established numerous times. The people who compare one to the other as if they're the same game either haven't played both games equally for a decent amount of time or in many cases have only played one of the two games.
I don't see very many if any people though around here claiming that Rust/Dayz is a DayZ/Rust rip-off.
Both are survival games ... The main threat in both is players ... The main pass time is looting items ... And these days it seems like your gimping your game if you make a survival game with no option to build a proper stronghold. To me, they are all the same. Many people say Rust is one of a kind ... Not really ... if Rust had kept the zombies and went with a full voxel build system instead of pre-fab it would be literally 7 days to die ... if they took out building entirely and re-added zombies, it would be dayz/deadlinger/warz/fpssurvivor ...
We have hit the point where all survival games are essentially the same things. Get loot, get your bearings, get some kills.
No, they removed it recently.
Version 0.42.116181, released on 2014-03-19
Actions: Removed force feed action for disinfectant and alcohol tincture
http://dayz.gamepedia.com/Changelog
There was both force feed and force drink for these items. It is redundant so the force feed option was removed. You can still force drink these items.
in dayz you wont see this error "Ticket Expired + Facepunch_Connector_Missing FeatureImplementation "
and you can actually play the game
Conceptually, DayZ is more realistic and hardcore. There's a TON of items, very sophisticated player health system (you can get shock, heart attack, get checked for pulse, get revived with shock paddles, etc), realistic towns, etc.
Instead, IMO Rust is more gamey/cartooney and goes straight for the fun.
If you enjoy realism/depth more than PVP, then you'd like DayZ more.
That said, DayZ's engine has UNBELIEVABLY SHITTY controls for an FPS (mouse and movement lag, going through doors feels clumsy and you keep bumping into door frames, turning around is painful, all animations take FUCKING AGES).
It's the engine from the game Arma 2, which has vehicles like planes, helicopters and cars. I guess FPS is not the focus and that's why FPS controls aren't crisp at all. Rust beats the living shit out of DayZ in this regard.
DayZ also carries over a lot of bugs from Arma 2, like things being dropped to the ground and disappearing, you tend to fall off ladders when you try to get down them, etc.
Melee feels like an afterthought and you never know where melee weapons will hit or where to aim.
Zombies also currently go through walls and closed doors, whopdedoo.
If you think Rust is too alpha, wait till you play DayZ.
I feel like adapting the Arma 2 game to the vision of DayZ will take A TON more effort than building Rust from scratch. Unity seems like a way better engine for an FPS, and I think Rust will mature a lost faster than DayZ.

Doesn't DayZ mod have a mod :v: that let you build? It was called Epoch or something
is it worth playing dayz, especially after rust? (going to buy dayz)
Absolutely. Both are very different games, don't let Rust stop you from buying DayZ or vice versa just because you own one. Rust is a much smoother experience because the engine was built from the ground up, while DayZ is much more clunky, but feels more realistic because of it. Some glitches can be considered as features, such as falling off of ladders to your death, because y'know, with a 120 pounds of guns, armor and gear, eventually you'll fall off a damn ladder.
