there are pve (player vs environment) servers. It could be a good idea to try those out if you're finding it difficult against others?
Why don't some of you guys on here who are struggling individually, band up. Stick together and build your own little settlement? Could be an idea worth exploring. :)

I think you completely missed the point..
Infact, instead of pvp'ing with firearms on this game. Why not play a proper FPS like cod or battlefield, and let us play the game it meant to be played? Could be an idea exploring for you guys wanting to greiff everyone? :)
That's actually a fair point too, and tires directly with my raising post in a way. People who can do nothing but play night and day can absolutely destroy everyone else and everything else. They can farm copious amounts of explosives, or build stairs up to your ceiling, especially at times of the day when they are meet with absolutely no resistance. This has been a problem with this genre, but is much more apparent in rust due to sleepers and volatile spawns.
It's also not easy to solve. Besides some artificial limits, i have no solutions right now.
Being able to stockpile offensively and using items the way you want is what makes the game awesome. We shouldnt change that. Playing a LOT will benefit you a lot. But playing on a different timezone to gain an advantage you couldnt get in real life is just fubar imo.
If I played on an asian server I could easily night-raid aswell, but I dont see the fun in it.
If someone, in real life, was building a TOWER beside my house and I had 10 people sleeping in it with M4s, Id probably do something about it.
I totally understand your grief and its just how the game currently is...its an alpha that is testing lots of things, like server, stability, a bunch of items that have no connection m4 and hatches, bows and kevlar etc. all of this will need balancing also C4 charges and how often they spawn and if they can be crafted indefinetly once you learned them ... don't expect anything to stay because it could happen that you build an empire and next day the servers get wiped because of a new release.
Have some fun building and killing, get a clan ...but don't give the current game the fault for not beeing balanced ...it'll change trust me.

This i agree, but people should still voice their concern so it gets changed for the better.

How's it meant to be played?
The idea behind Rust is that we give you stuff to use and it's up to you how to use it. We're not forcing you to play it a certain way, you make the experience.
"Rust is a multiplayer game, so there will be other players trying to survive in the same way that you are. Unfortunately for you they can find you, kill you and take your stuff. Fortunately for you – you can kill them and take their stuff. Or maybe you can make friends and help each other survive. Rust’s world is harsh – so you might need to make friends to survive."

I was going to quote saying I agree with this guy, then I saw that you were staff so now Ill just say youre "right" :).
What I enjoy is that you can link what you do ingame to what you would do in reality. And if that connection dissapears so will I and probably alot of other players.
But as an alpha I really hope you guys take suggestions made in the forums seriously.
(Except the one about NPC babies and being able to reproduce with female players.... jesus christ...)

All ive seen so far is it being played as a FPS. So youve not really done a good job on fulfilling your description in my opinion. All i hear people talk about is being greiffed, all i hear on chat is people complaining about being greiffed, all i see on steam reviews is people being greiffed... is that how this game is meant to be played? If it is, then its not the game for me.

Have you tried different servers? Supposed to be a few that has "Police-militias" that helps players being griefed. If that power ever took a majority on the server, that would mean bandits had a baaaaad time.
Might be a goal worthy of looking into for you since youre being abused so much. Youre not alone in being stomped by M4-bandits mate.

Have you played on the high population servers?
Well its not just me im speaking up for. Its every where else i see people complaining about it. Ive tried 4 servers so far (official ones) and theyve all been pretty much the same. The one im currently on has been the most safe, but still get raided and greiffed daily.
Their is huge potential for this game but i think certain mechanics at the moment allow for too much abuse. Thats what im trying to get across. We all love pvp including me, but its the abuse thats the problem.
It's another shitty DayZ ripoff what did you expect?
DayZ itself is lame and broken.

The biggest Bandit party Ive seen contained 7 people. The biggest village of non-bandit players had about 30 members.
If they have M4s those bandits would be minced meat. And every 2-3 man bandit party would be unable to profit from banditing due to the lack of M4s theyd have.
Start gathering people for a village. Spread out so youre not too vournable in the beginning. Start slowly gathering up your strength and then move into a single village.
Start gathering strength and when you have 10+ M4s/kevlar (doesnt take as long as you think) you can start pushing out.
Build fake-houses you just populate with 10+ people and make those bandits pay.
Find the bandits normal targets and lie in wait in the mountains, when they enter the house go after the bastards. Build houses with obvious easy-entry points on top and hole in the roofs, fill the rooms with spiked walls.
Do whatever you want, remember its and alpha and if the game isnt your cup of tea try it in a month or two :).

I enjoy the pvp and raiding, good times.
The problem comes when we all need to log off eventually. They can come in and 'tunnel' their way into your base to take everything while you are working/sleeping.
What about a method similar to Shadowbane, in that you can only destroy bases between set hours each night.. 6pm till midnight.
This way there is no sneaky raiding during the day/night while people are away and can't defend unless they make it their second job.
Of course during the rest of the time you can kill whoever, just not destroy buildings.
I haven't seen a single person who has struggled who didn't try to settle where they spawned. You spawn in the middle of what we called 'Death Valey' on our server. Just run away, the coast is a good place to get to and settle a sleeping bag at.
Then, as others said, numbers > all. I think that's a great part of the game, and as others have said I've seen settlements starting to form with numerous geared and dedicated players.

Then, my friend, you have been utterly blessed by luck.
I have played on 3 different servers. Based on names from the wiki map I have built houses from north of heisemburg to the southwest coast and further east.
I have been CRUSHED every time, always by night.
We got to end-game gear on this server after I had played for 10 minutes. I ran into a warehouse, found a shotgun, ran out and instantly saw a full kevlar dude running behind a rock trying to mine it. I ran across the field, naked, with a shotgun and blew his head clean off, getting us plans for full kevlar and M4s.
It was a dickish move I grant you, but the 6 of us needed his kevlar more than he did :).
I love this game, but theres just some certain things that needs to be fixed, and balanced, and as long as people can have civil discussions about them I would think the devs, whos probably spending hours upon hours with trying to think of ways to better the game, would only be thankful for it.

Well, i guess the servers you frequent are better than the uk or Europe ones.
You cant gather people for a village, people are too frightened to co operate or they just KOS, maybe for the same reason. And if all were doing is building m4's for a showdown, then i might aswell break out BF4 without all the tediousness involved of collecting resources, die... collect some more, die again...
Surely removing the capacity for people to be so aggressive would be much better. IMO their is no need for such powerfull weapons in game. Of course we want weapons but i think they should be limited to encourage community growth and give more to than just get an M4 then kill or be killed.
If for instance we only had bows and arrows (just an example) You cant kill so easy with that. Your more likely to settle with a group and help each other, because your less likely to die 20 times before actually getting anywhere. people would be more co-operative. People could build proper forts or bases. That would then encourage huge base raids with 30 people on each team or so.
Its no fun spending hours gathering stuff to build something to be killed over and over without really getting anywhere. It seems im better off getting this M4 and then to hell with everything else the game has to offer.

I cant tell you were safe, I cant tell you we wont have to relocate, I cant tell you that you wont die or that you wont have to gather rediculous ammounts of recourses.
I can however well you that youre welcome to join us at [EU]Noobs welcome PVP/SLEEP server if you sort your attitude and join our... well I guess you can call it appartment complex :).
And I think youve gotten something wrong mate. Carrying around an M4 and kevlar makes you MORE prone to attacks.
People want them items dude.

Sooner or later youll get your M4, and then youll have to make new choices. Because however mad you are, you cant solo snipe a bandit team.

Exactly, i get killed then have to start again... no fun :).
It was pointed out you can play how you want, do what you want.
''The idea behind Rust is that we give you stuff to use and it's up to you how to use it. We're not forcing you to play it a certain way, you make the experience.''
Though all people keep telling me is to meta-game else im a nub. Doesn't quite fit. I HAVE to find a group, we HAVE to work together. somethings amiss somewhere...
Maybe if i could go far away on the map i could invite a couple of freinds and we can set up our own little camp.. oh wait.. i cant? Theirs no resources that far to do that? but you just said... agh.
Ok, so ill move onto somewhere else, try that.. oh wait , i just got raided and killed over and over by someone else instead...
Ok, so im gonna build my own fort and live in this, maybe help some passers by. What?? Its been destroyed while ive been logged off? man...
I give up! ill just go over to these nice friendly looking people and see if i can hel...oh, killed again. I guess not.
Surely you see my point? I know im not the only one with these problems, they are on the forums, they are on the steam review page, they are all ingame.
Anyway, ive made point lol. So ill shut up now. Ill just sit tight and wait to see what direction this game goes in. I would love to see it mature into something good and if it does i can see myself sinking quite a few hours into it.
Anarchy as a mechanic is never a justification. The game is a game, and for it to be enjoyable to most there has to be a set ammount of balance. There have to be some rules, and well crafted ones. That is the concept of a game.
If you want a game where you can do anything, make sure that in the process the majority is not prevented from doing everything.
Part of makin the game as free as the developers intended is, in part, making sure that freedom isn't actually turning into no freedom at all. All of this can be made through clever mechanics and balance.
Imo most people aren't asking for the game to change, they aren't asking the devs to make a different game.
They want PvP and raiding, but the game is in alpha and many are reaching to the conclusion that for this to work in favor of everyone and the game itself, some mechanics need to be added to prevent widespread griefing. People are speaking their mind, and trying to give feedback. this is not only expected, is a positive thing.
I've played the game for a total of 24 hours so far, and what have I accomplished? Nothing. As I type this, my room is filled to the brink by my tasty salty tears.
The farthest I've went into the game is getting a house setup with a furnace a work bench and I had a mp5 and a pistol. What happens? A team of faggots with their fancy pants satchel charge blows up every metal door I have and proceed to kill me and basically make me start with nothing but a rock again.
I server hop. On this server I've never gotten past the stone hatchet phase because as soon as I spawn and begin getting resources, a crazed gunman with a m4 starts shooting naked people. As you'd imagine I'm quit boiling at this point and these group of people were so nice to me and offered me to join their team ( I accepted ) They offered me space to build a house on their land. So for the next few hours I put my heart and sweat into my new location. Gathering as many resources as possible and making stuff, all the while I'm chatting and joking with them on TeamSpeak. So today I come home from school and login with nothing but a rock. My new so called friends have just wiped my existence out of this universe.
As dumb as I am and I don't learn, progression in this game eventually is destroyed by satchel charges. I server hop once more and make a house get stuff. This time I even managed to get kevlar and an m4. What happens? I look outside and see a fucking staircase leading up to my window. I block it off with metal doors, but who cares? Satchel fuckin charges. " THANKS FOR THE SHIT HOMEBOY " are the last words I get to hear before I'm left again naked with a fucking rock.
TL;DR - How the fuck are you supposed to progress in this game
If you haven't already uninstalled the game, my best advice would be to find a really low pop server to experience the whole progression with.
If you don't want to lose all your players, you can DEFINITELY find places to build houses where nobody is. First all, fucking SCOUT your locations man... I can't fucking communicate to you new guys how important that is. Knowing if there is a megabase near you is 100% fucking everything. Do it.
Nextly, put your house in a fucking rock mountainside, raiders dont have the patience or nuts to go wandering around in a mountain side where some naked dude with a pistol can get the drop on them. So they just wander around in forests where they have terrain advantage / can get any poor fuckers houses in said forest. Once you have a secure house, DONT BURN ANYTHING AT NIGHT
Maybe i shouldve said that earlier, this game makes your house a fucking christmas tree if you burn fire / furnace at night. never do it if you're actually trying hard to survive.
Final step is to keep trying, if you arn't prepared to lose your shit in a hardcore survival game then you're right, it's time to hop back on hello kitty online: the brony expansion pack

Addition to this :
DO NOT BUILD A HOUSE WHERE PEOPLE CAN JUMP ON TOP OF IT FROM THE MOUNTAIN BESIDE IT.

You have to weather the bad times out and get more experienced with the game to enjoy the good times. I've hit the top and bottom, and whenever I do hit the bottom I know the top will come back around eventually if I keep going and not quit like a wienie. If you can't accept the fact that you will get stomped a fair percentage of this game and that if people want to play this like a FPS they are more than welcome to, then you probably shouldn't play it.
Rust is your journey, Make your choice for it may be your last
These games are defined by dying and restarting. You will die. It's how you learn. As an alpha, though, there's not a lot to do aside from kill people. There will be more to do.
It's very hard solo - even with a single buddy, you're way better off.
Honestly, this game is not worth the money even if its still only in alpha.
to those who are reading, please do not buy this game unless its on steam 75%+ off sale.
