I can't speak for New Zealanders (New Zealandians? Not actually sure if that's the correct term or not to be honest) but Americans are all too commonly trash at their own native language because they simply don't care. Which is why some of the best English speakers I personally know speak English as a second language. It takes a lot more care and dedication to speak a language adequately when it's not your native language.

also learning a second language makes you pay close attention to spelling and grammar, whereas your first language comes first informally/orally and just aftwards formally/written.
