Probably not what you want to hear, but try re-installing the game. It worked for me. Took about 20 minutes to download and install.
New update for rust just released now, 5:40 PST. Let's hope for the best right..
You mean, you want garry to alpha test his alpha before releasing it to the public to test?

early accesseption

i get your frustration, but seriously, some of your responses are pretty unreasonable. care to fill us all in on how to fix this "obvious simple problem"?
i think it's all slow because there is trees everywhere. whose idea was it to put trees eveerywhere on the map?
God's. The islands should have trees everywhere a tree can grow

B4 the update I could run the game on max settings with 100 FPS, now the game will not only not start if its not on the lowest settings, but with everything shut off, it still run's only at a max of 20 fps.
What did they they do this update? Oh let me look, one thing, changed the grass.
"Hmm... 50 thousand players are suddenly dropping to 5 fps and we only added one thing in our update I wonder what it could be..."
I'm not the programmer, It's not my responsiblity to help these "professional" developers in making a game. The good old saying "dont break it if it aient broke" really isent applying to them I guess.
Not only that, they managed to completely remove the AI from animals and the ability to even get headshots on them. Again, taking something that is working and breaking it. That'd be called Alpha testing if they'd actually fix it after breaking it. All they did this update was break things and now apparently its the weekend and they don't bother doing anything. Maybe they'll do some actual positive work on monday.. Only time will tell..

My advice to you is go play somehing else until rust is out of beta! You seem to want to play not test this game well the bad news is its not play time its test time. I would think the constant server wipes would have been an i dication its a test environment.
Last week they mentioned they are aware of every single issue regarding performance and they are working on fixing it. However i did not expect those buggy updates to be pushed to the main branch :|. I always though they would either delay the "devblog patch" for a week or a few weeks until they sorted everything out. I honestly dont mind if they take a month or two in order to add a bigger patch with better tested content and leave the week patch for bug fixes.
Content patch at the start of the month and take the entire month to fix every bug and issue with the main patch while working on next month content patch. That's how i would release content on a WIP game.
Thats more of a beta process isnt it. Alpha is get code in! It might be ugly but if its in it can get fixed in time. Im ok with the approach the warning when i purchased my copy was rather explicit

If i'm not mistaken, legacy = alpha and experimental is now considered beta. There's a dev branch that could be considered a "in between" alpha and beta but still..
No i dont think so this is most certainly still alpha. Legacy was attempt no1 thats all.
