With the number of servers I would be happy to see the amount of key sold per hour increase, it was fun how there was 200 players per server 3-4 months ago.
200 people on such a small map is dumb, you can't play how it is supposed to be played with that many on one server. There is more than 16,000 registered users. Let's have two servers. No, that's dumb.
I think a way to sort servers, such as by numbers of players, ping, and alphabetical. Let's face it, if it was only alphabetical, a bunch of the servers admins would try as many unusual characters they can to be on/near the top.
Something like a "Favorites" list would do well.
I don't think having "too many" servers is the issue. I think it's the lack of organization or sorting.
When we will get RUST hosting service in asia ?
I think we just need a Valve-esque server browser
I think that the server number is perfect, I perfer having lots of choices over being forced to play on a specific server. The population is perfect on some. Not getting instant kos but still being chased by a full m4 geared dude.
Do we need less server or more players? You guys really are not forward thinking.
he mean, he can't kill naked guys so he's sad now.
The wolves want less servers for more sheep to prey on. The sheep want more servers to escape the wolves.
Garry, are the server files released yet? Or server hosting is limited to hosting companies ?
I manage the biggest survival / zombie (mainly dayz) community in Spain, and we have preety good dedicated servers managed by ourselves.
We really would like to setup a Rust server on our own if that is posible.
Thanks.
Guys, you really have to try and see from both perspectives.
Think about other games such as DayZ/Infestation(WarZ). Even those games have privately rented servers.
It's giving people an extra option to do what they want with the game.
Let's take this scenario:
A clan rents a server, starts playing on it consistently and here we have 2 possibilities:
- server becomes popular, more players join
- server doesn't become popular, clan doesn't get much PvP and they decide to go to another one.
That's what usually happens with games that even though might have a big audience, have a lot of player slots per server. You can even think of Minecraft. You have your average servers with 20-50 players and you have some servers with 100-500 players. Don't believe me, take a look at some of the online server browsers.
People will indeed join servers that they find suitable for their desire. Everybody has different tastes...
I don't see how this game will have problems with population, especially when it hits steam, just wait and see.
I do have some suggestions though:
1) Split the server list in 2
-Official servers, leave the basic ones in there, say like 10-20 servers(for now) that were previously there, before shared hosting was possible for everyone.
Ex: Central Europe Sleeper/No sleeper, Germany, France, UK, US West/East Coast, PvE servers EU/US etc..
-Private Servers, rented by players.
Why would this work for the best:
- People will have to choose a type of server at first, will basically have 2 options. Go on the official servers that will be very populated or switch to the Private Servers where they'll find a mix of servers.
- Players seem to be also concerned due to the fact that Private Servers, that have a player taking the role of an admin might offer some an unfair advantage. VALID POINT!
Example: I am the admin, I can do what I want, teleport, god mode, spawn items. Before you jump at my neck, keep in mind I DON't KNOW what exactly an admin CAN or CAN NOT do, but if he's abusing his privileges, it's enough to ruin the game for others, people that are not his friends/not in his clan.
- Introduce the ability to sort the servers by: Player Count/Ping/Name(alphabetical order)
What you'll get/ TL:DR
-Diversity of servers, some highly populated, such as the official servers, some with less population where you can develop in peace.
-A fair game when you play on an official server, without admin influence.

1) Split the server list
I think this is the way to go.

Great, please also post your reply in this new topic, I really thought this is something that concerns all of us and as such deserved a separate topic

P.S. Don't forget to vote in poll :P
I would be happy if there was made an official 'PVE NoSleeper' for us noobs to play and have fun on, so we would not have to rely on private servers.
We NEED as many servers as we can get. When this goes live on Steam, do you have any idea how hard we are going to get hit? I've been in many releases recently and most games go down for at least 2 or 3 days when launching on Steam due purely to the massive hit the servers take...
No, the number of servers now is extremely high, 30 people average on each server is pretty bad for action wise. Also with them being private servers it makes it worse because well, people just spawn in gear.
Bigger map is coming. That's really gonna spread people out. Steam launch soon, massive jump in playerbase. Sweeping game changes coming, alpha. This game is evolving, you gotta let it grow. 150 people? That's what you want? That many people on the current map and you can't walk 5 feet without hitting someone, this isn't Call of Duty. There's a reason you spawn with a rock instead of a m-16.

I see a couple servers still in the 50-100 range, if you want action why not play on them?
smkymtnman is right though because when the game does go live on steam the servers are going to get hit hard. I'd imagine there would be several thousand orders within the first hour or two depending on how well steam advertises the launch for Garry. I'd actually go on a limb and say it could be significantly higher then that estimate.
So, just an anecdotal piece information. I have a game key, was pretty excited to try rust out but in the lead up to getting the key came to realize Rust probably wasn't what I thought it was. I've yet to use the key to play.
I THOUGHTRust was going to be a survival crafting game where human interaction was rare and exciting. I came to find out the world was pretty densely packed with players and it was unlikely you could go for any length of time and still feel alone. That was a TURN OFF.
Seeing your post here that the player base is fragmenting and servers' populations are becoming LESS dense actually has my interest piqued again. Keep in mind that though all the folks that kept playing maybe liked that density, perhaps a large POTENTIAL player base left or waited for things to change into the situation you're seeing now. I'm one.

PVE maybe?
As of yesterday I was arguing for less servers. I logged in just now since yesterday to see over 40 new servers? Seriously? lol

And whats wrong with all the new servers ?? Nothing in my eyes is wrong with them, i now have many choices to pick from and all the people complaining there is not a big enough player count on the servers should OPEN their eyes, i saw over 6 servers last night with over 50+ even saw some servers with 80+ players, Please people stop complaining about the servers!! if u want to play on a server with 60+ there is lots of them to choose from.
PVE maybe?
Nah, that wasnt my point. I want the game to have PvP interaction and the social complexities that brings. I just hoped it would be rarer, not running into other players every 10 minutes.

I'm with Garry, and both of these guys speak the truth.
Those of you who complain about the amount of servers are the ones who are AGAINST choice. The type of want to force others into a particular environment simply because it suits you. Not everybody wants to play like that. More servers offer more of those choices.
The good news for those of you who want more people per server is that the option is still there... IF other people feel the same as you. You'll play with more people who think just like you. Your challenge will probably increase because those people will be more prepared for that environment.
The problem with having fewer servers for large populations means you cater to a niche market. Something very specific. You'd find that as time went on, people wouldn't like the lack of choices. They won't play as often, and find other games that better suit their needs. The population in the servers would level out... perhaps to a point of your liking, perhaps not.
And as Garry has pointed out, its better to have the servers available for new players now than to suddenly need them when you're already overcrowded.
Do we need less server or more players? You guys really are not forward thinking.
Well i think less servers an not that many more peapole selling 20 keys per H is a litlle much in my opinion cuz that make peapole wanna make server cuz they think more players will join and pay member and stuff for them and the original funny servers get more empty
Would it not make sense to have 2 server tabs, one for official rust servers and another one for public servers? Would make it a lot easier to find the server you want to play on since you can't even arrange it by name or anything.
More servers the better. Can already see people promoting theirs. Whoever promotes a server well wins, the rest will just die off.
Rust alpha keys are being sold 500 a day now and selling easily.
I dont see the problem. Each server has lots of different setups, i think its fantastic.
I really like all of the new servers.
Why the fuck would people want less servers?
I can remember Everyone was crying to garry for more servers before ideal-hosting started selling servers
Now when we have more servers, those butthurt trolls are begging from less servers. Make your fucking mind up already!
The only change I want from the servers is to have a History and a Favourites list.
Much like the legacy server browser.
Perhaps adding sorting on the server list (sort by players, ping, name, etc.) will help increase player count on some servers.
As mentioned before, adding a method to easily differentiate between official and rented servers could direct more traffic towards official servers where there is zero chance of admin corruption. The fact that there are three official servers is irrelevant.
Would it not make sense to have 2 server tabs, one for official rust servers and another one for public servers? Would make it a lot easier to find the server you want to play on since you can't even arrange it by name or anything.
Or even just to have a simple search function for server names, ping, etc etc.
I get the big picture with "more servers = better" when there are A LOT more players, but right now, it's just shitty. We can't even find a server to play on with good population really; we joined one that was popular, put a lot of time into it, then it died out in a couple of days. Rinse and repeat. Choice is a good thing, but too many choices leads to confusion. Looking at that server list now, there's even more than yesterday, and it's just depressingly long with dozens and dozens of servers with < 10 and 20 players, and many more with 0-5.
A nice balance would be to make the official servers more prominent within the server list. Players who find the current average player count boring, such as myself, will flock to these servers whereas others can use the more sparsely populated private ones.
Something needs to change as it has totally changed the game for me. Gary's responses have been quite dismissive of the impact this has had which is a bit disconcerting.
