The whole give Alpha-Testers the game for free is a good move for the people playing, but it's gonna cost Garry and his crew a bit of profit, maybe that's also something to take into account with this account deletion issue.
The accounts were deleted for bad alpha testers and inactivity
It makes sense that if someone has not played in a week or two+ then the spot should be freed both for less server stress as well as a possible chance for a new testers perspective.
Inactive accounts have definitely been deleted. I got into the alpha back when garry had released some magic key that could be used tons of times and haven't played since and now my account is gone. I kind of understand it though, I definitely wasn't a valuable alpha tester. I guess it wouldn't have hurt Facepunch to keep my account active either, but whatever.
Yeah, got a key back in the first thread in like, january? Didn't play often because sensitivity and issues with updating, but sucks it's gone now. Oh well, I guess.
I seriously think there should be one account per IP, and when you log in it's permanently logged in so you can't switch accounts or re-register without doing some browser/proxy trickery. A lot of people are taking codes just to resell accounts or reserve tons of them in case.
What if two people live in the same house and they both got a rust key?
I'm not exactly experienced in these kind of stuff but you can probaly use Hardware ID. Correct me if I'm wrong.
They were deleted. Thats a fact. They were bad alpha testers thats a fact too
They were bad alpha testers? Some of the guys who lost their accounts like me found countless bugs and reported them all. I talked to drako's crew and them a lot to give them info of the bugs I found because they talked directly to the devs in mumble.
I'm not exactly experienced in these kind of stuff but you can probaly use Hardware ID. Correct me if I'm wrong.
That's a waaaaaaaay better idea. But the general idea is they shouldn't be able to easily just register Rust keys and acquire a collection. [editline]13th August 2013[/editline]
They were bad alpha testers? That's the only thing you're using to back up what you say and frankly, it's sad.

That's the only thing you're using to back up what you say and frankly, it's sad.
There's no "Bad Reading" rating so you get dumb instead. Also, try actually reading what he said. TgTalcon is claiming to have been an active alpha tester and bug reporter on Rust.

TgTalcon is claiming to have been an active alpha tester and bug reporter on Rust.
He's been posting on another thread about why his account got banned for "troll account" and sought out a much more valid reason for his ban. Sometime into the rage-inducing chat, he talked about all the Alpha games he tested which fueled his ego and used it to back up his statements, most of which were flawed. So you get the "dumb" rating as well for making a blind assumption that I read badly. You should have read wauterboi's response to TgTalcon as well, "Don't start this BS up again". He knows what Talcon is doing. So you should read previous posts to get a better understanding.
This crap-storm could've been avoided by sending out an email notifying users that they have a week or two to login otherwise their account will be purged.
Is there anyway to get our accounts back if they have been deleted? I don't want to beg for a Rust key
This crap-storm could've been avoided by sending out an email notifying users that they have a week or two to login otherwise their account will be purged.
That would defeat the purpose of secretly getting rid of alts and accounts that people try to sell.
That would defeat the purpose of secretly getting rid of alts and accounts that people try to sell.
Wouldn't an account that someone is trying to sell be used? How is that single metric "activeness" enough to say "this is an alt someone is trying to sell." You see how that's a vast over-generalization? You end up singling out legitimate players as well. Again, they simply should've given less keys out, warned players before deleting their accounts, then redistributed new keys in place of those. That way you more or less have a consistent level of active players. That's really all I have to say on the matter.
Okay so, my account actually no longer exists. I played back in June, but stopped for about a month, and when I tried to log back in a few days ago, It said the user did not exist.

Two months sounds like long enough
Wait, so I went inactive for little over 2 months and now my account is gone? What happened to keeping the full game when it released? I was one of the first people to test the game. Actually last time I logged in was July so it wasn't even a full 60 days.
people that got alpha keys will get to keep the full game when it releases
I didn't break the rules. I didn't scam anyone. I didn't sell my account or share it. [editline]14th August 2013[/editline]
That would defeat the purpose of secretly getting rid of alts and accounts that people try to sell.
And it fucked over the people who legitimately wanted to play the game and take a break until it got a bit more optimized/polished. [editline]14th August 2013[/editline]
Two months sounds like long enough
People take vacations. People work. People focus on school. People focus on other games. People wait for updates/later releases. Account deletion is always ridiculous and doing it without warning is unheard of and uncalled for. Who cares if some 12 year old little cunt lost his $30 because he got scammed? Why should I lose my privilege to play the game when I registered waaaaaaaaay back in April/May before it even opened up to the public? [editline]14th August 2013[/editline]
It makes sense that if someone has not played in a week or two+ then the spot should be freed both for less server stress as well as a possible chance for a new testers perspective.
It's a MySQL database. A couple hundred megabytes at most if there are MILLIONS of users. It's a username and a password in text format. It isn't stressing anything.
According to my web history, the last time I went on playrust was July 4th. I have no idea why it was deleted but that's only around 40 days.
Yep, sorry guys. We deleted about 9,000 accounts that hadn't logged in for a month. This was for a few different reasons. The main one being that due to the beta key exploit some people had registered 50+ accounts and were selling them. We wanted to get rid of inactive accounts anyway - so this was the quickest, cheapest solution.
Will this be done again or was this just a 1-time thing?
I'm not Garry, but I've a feeling that Garry will do this as many times as he needs to... so, if fucktards keep gathering up dozens of accounts for profit, there's going to be acid poured on the account database to clean up.

I mean I've been around since April/May and I took a break after 100+ hours logged in and now I've lost my account which qualifies me for
people that got alpha keys will get to keep the full game when it releases
A month is way too short term for that kind of deletion because I guarantee plenty of those were people like me who were working/focusing on school/their social lives/playing other games or waiting for updates/the game to feel more complete than it is now (Unity web plugin performs horribly even though I'm running on a high-end PC).
What about retrieving legitimate accounts?
This would be nice, although I'm not sure how one could find out which accounts were "legitimate" and which ones were not.
If the current alpha testers / players get a free copy when rust is released, why would they give a free copy to people who don't test the game?

You could've had 1000+ hours logged, helped fixed hundreds of bugs, and if you took a month long break, bye bye account. On the flip-side some guy could've acquired a key, barely contributed to helping report/fix bugs, and kept his account only because he logged in within the month.

I registered before the keys were even required as well. It's shitty because dedicated members are losing their accounts meanwhile people who happened to log in within 30 days lost their access and people lucky/quick enough to grab a key in the Gold Member Forum are getting in just fine as always.
I magically still have my alt account (I had two, one for craftwhoring and storage and one for normal gameplay, scold me if you wish) and I was extremely dedicated before my account was removed. It's kind of bullshitty with the current system about who's getting removed and stuff, atleast a warning would weed out the ones who just didn't give a damn and maybe get the ones on a break or whatever back into the game.

It's one of those things where there's no perfectly fair way to do it, only the least unfair.
