Maybe something like a deathclaw in fallout? Not exactly like it.. But something scary like that, That is super hard to kill without a group or high end weapons.
Killer apes would be pretty sweet...
Granted, I am bias. XD
I really like the idea of Military. Dinosaurs do not fit the game IMO. I would say Military > Mutated Humans > Robots
Please no Jurassic Parck!
creatures that you can capture and train to fight for you, you feed it raw chicken and it goes mental
Dinosaurs with M4?
If you end up doing Dinosaurs there needs to be a wide variety of species.
Also just imagine trying to get away from a pack of velociraptors.
trains
Still with the military BS
READ MY LIPS
FUCK NO
IF you want some military bullshit fucked up vehicle tank guns rocket launcher post apocalyptic game.
GO FUCKING PLAY DAYZ
Rust is more than the perfect game to turn into a complete survival simulation game.
The map, atmosphere and even weapons/structures are almost there. Just get rid of all the new high tech BS and throw us back to the stoneage
And dinosaurs dont have to be huge!
There are plenty of man sized, slightly larger than man sized, and kid sized dinos.
Right now the only element of fear is other players, and animals are just annoying, they dont make you feel worried about running through an area, you easily outrun them.
you guys could have something totally new and different! I dont think people realize how awesome it would be to have a full fledged fricken million years ago survival game. ITS NEVER BEEN DONE
Both Dinosaurs and aliens.
I like the idea of both military and dinosaurs. Rust is a military controlled island full of dinosaurs, and us players as prisoners or something dropped off as dino food. This would be a way to incorporate dinosaurs and military personnel together. Military personnel fly to the rust island in a chopper to collect research data, and there we have our opportunity to kill them for C4/M4/research kits/etc.
As for reason to kill dinosaurs apart from the obvious survival aspect, taking down big t-rexs and such could trigger military events. T-rex goes down, military come to clear the area and collect data.
Games with dinosaurs, aliens, or lasers always have a limited following.
I think it should be humanoids using primitive weapons, mutants, and wildlife. Instead of radtowns, have encampments with humans and their animals.
Jesus, i feel like im whipping a dead horse, or yelling at a bunch of imbeciles.
Why do you want another fcking military game?! Rust is not military!
Godzilla.. for the whole map. DONE
Rust has already established a theme, both in name and atmosphere. That theme is that of a post apocalyptic wasteland. STALKER or Fallout come to mind. People are voting Dinosaurs because "lol dinosaurs". It's the dumbest option, so it will get the most votes. Hell even steampunk or robots or Borderlands style hillbilly bandits would make more sense than fucking dinosaurs.
Dinosaurs would be nice, but they are something that must be implemented from the ground up. Thematically they are not something you can just toss in mid development. You have already established a theme, and it's one that hasn't been broken into fully. Sandbox STALKER multiplayer? Fuck yes.
Mutants, military, bandits, that's where the theme lies, and that's what you should do. Something like Snorks or Bloodsuckers from STALKER. They aren't zombies, they're interesting, and they fit a hell of a lot better than dinosaurs.
While you're at it bring anomalies into the game.
I picked dinosaurs just to be a silly ass and was extremely amused to see it was the top answer. >XD
Expanding Upon the Animal/Mutant Theme Rather Than Adding a New Monster Type
One option not on that list that I believe should be strongly considered is expanding on the current animal and mutant animal dynamic, rather than trying to force in a new group and theme.
I say this because the mutant idea has been explored in other games, but very rarely has it focused on the animals of a realistic world. It is a fun and fresh idea, that I enjoy thoroughly, and it also has a ton of room to grow.
The rest of this post list new areas that the animal/mutant animal could be expanded to.

More Realistic Animal Behavior
Without changing any animals or adding new ones, the behaviors could be improved upon to provide a more dynamic, engaging experience. The term my friend used was "I want less Word of Warcraft mobs and more Farcry 3". Additional animations, such as animals eating, cleaning themselves, socializing, attacking smaller animals, etc. would help.
To give examples, randomized behaviors could also go a long way in this respect.
Examples:
Some animals have a chance to fight OR run.
Some animals will run until backed into a corner, at which point they fight. This would be good for a semi-passive animal, like Elk, Foxes, or Wild Boars. Ranged weapons would be more effective on such animals.
Some animals will threaten you at a certain range, by growling and baring teeth, but will attack you at a closer range. This would be a sort of soft-aggro/hard-aggro setup.
Some animals fight until seriously wounded, and then try to run.

Mutant Passive Animals
Why are Elk, Rabbits, Chickens, and Pigs immune to the radiation?
You thought they were easy prey, but you thought wrong! Mutated Elk would stomp you down. Mutated pigs would bumrush you. Mutated chickens would peck at your feet, making them dangerous in larges numbers.
Mutated passives do not necessarily need the same loot table as mutated aggressives or their passive counterparts. This gives opportunity to better divide loot tables.
More Animals and Mutant/Giant Varieties
There is a huge portion of the animal kingdom the game has yet to explore.
Just in the climate of Rust_Island, we could have passive and mutated Birds. The passive birds would fly away when approached, but would be vulnerable to ranged weapons when sitting still. Mutated birds could attack you, possibly in swarms. There could also be a Giant Mutant Bird variant, which is much riskier to fight but has a much greater reward.
Here are some examples that occurred to me:
Birds/Bats and Giant/Mutant Variants
Sea Creatures like Shark or Octopus
Other Forest Animals like Foxes, Beavers, Mountain Lions, and their variants.
Giant, Radioactive Gecko that regrows any body part except it's head
Once the map expands, we could have Urban Animals as well:
Passive animals like dogs and housecats. (A Big Plus if they were tameable)
Passive, escaped zoo animals like Giraffes, Zebras, etc.
Aggressive escaped zoo animals like Apes, Lions, Hyenas, you name it.
Mutant and Giant variations on all of these.
Pets and Animal Taming
Sticking with the animals and mutant animals theme also provides the opportunity for a wonderful pet mechanic.
Passive animals like chickens and pigs could be tamed or domesticated over time, making them into farm animals. They could breed and lay eggs, and you could butcher them for the cloth and food. This should be difficult, though, and force the player to have a certain tech level before being able to do so, and even greater tech levels to accommodate greater numbers of animals. They might also need to be fed.
Passive pets, like dogs or chickens.
Aggressive, harder to tame pets, like wolves.
Conclusion
I love this game and I am determined to stick with it. I think you are doing a great job. I just think you should have a little more confidence in your ideas. The animal/mutant animal dynamic is a fun and fresh idea that I am already having a blast with. I just think that if it were fleshed out and expanded upon, rather than replaced, it would make the game even more enjoyable while maintaining the theme that makes it "Rust".
Thank you for taking the time to read my post.
I haven't had the time to read all (most) of the responses, but I think this.
i like the idea of indigenous packs of people on the island instead of rad animals (most of these ideas have been done to DEATH), but seems like it would require a different back story not involving nuclear radiation/apocalyptic scenarios. But say there's 1-2, maybe 3 indigenous people standing around, you can proceed solo in trying to kill them but if they're bigger groups, you have to run in a pack too or else you're dead because if you attack one they will all attack you. You could approach them without a weapon drawn and try to trade/talk/whatever and it could work out or they could attack you instead because that's how they roll. They might want your stuff. You could institute a reputation system. Say one of the indigenous people flees/makes it in their home and you can't kill them all, your rep goes down, making it harder to trade with them in the future. They might just attack you on sight because of your reputation... This reputation could apply to your interactions with other human players as well.
The rad towns could be the indigenous people's established areas, like a market/trading outpost. Maybe hire some of them to harvest some materials for you, etc. Have some rivers/lakes around as well, bridges that need to be crossed to get to one area or spots where you can safely walk across... maybe some fish you can stab/shoot... and birds. Why are there no birds?
This is obviously a huge re-working of the game but I feel it's a bit less stale than the other ideas. The kevlar this and that, c4 and machine guns wouldn't make a hell of a lot of sense in this context, either. But neither does a rad wolf dropping research kits and being made of chicken. But it would allow you to make more creative weapons out of your materials. Like a slingshot, crossbow, knives (for throwing, even), bear traps, a shovel, etc while keeping some of the hand-crafted guns.
**EDIT**
Obviously, this idea does not mean others cannot be implemented as well. Caveman style animals roaming around, Lord of the Flies/Thunderdome type stuff...
I do not envy you either way, Garry. You're sure to hear A LOT of bitching and moaning whatever way you choose to go.
I vote Dinosaurs but I don't really mean dinosaurs explicitly, more mutant animals but based on the look of dinosaurs. Reptilian style mutants. Dinosaurs also give a wide variety of possible enemies and different AI types. Small, fast raptor type enemy or large hulking T-rex style enemies. There could even be passive herbivore types later on.
You can put that idea up with almost every monster i really think dinasaurs are retarded in a game like this. I'd rather stick to zombies or even better militairy.
That's just what i think ^^
[editline]21st February 2014[/editline]
I though he wanted to make this game realistic btw?
I think the key will be, "invented dinosaurs" just because it could be funny. perhaps dinosaur bug hybrid aliens! Other then that if you are just converting the aesthetics of "zombies" then go for more old school undead is really all you can do. Changing the code however, well could lead to highlighting on the situations often presented by mob behavior.
Garry, I am posting for my second time ever just to say, for Christ's sake, don't do anything military. That's a terrible, boring, been-done-a-million-times idea and is an example of why you shouldn't ask people what they like, because they will simply ask for more of the same, but "improved".
You need a game with hippos that jump out of lakes and eat people while Tyrannosaurus fight on the plains of Rust Island with a roaming Hindi Shiva. Rust Island could be a very crazy place, so why limit it to any one category? Have Native American ghosts roam the mountains and give gear to travelers while a giant, inflatable Rubber Duck appears out of the sky and crushes parts of people's bases.
Fuck, I don't know what the right path is, Garry. Just please don't settle for a military game.
Maybe we are astronauts who had the mission to get to "that one" planet that's like the earth.
Now we're crash landing because of meteorites or stuff and waking up naked on the planet that seems to be like the earth.
We lost everything on an unknown planet and our instincts are tickling. SURVIVE!
Now, there can be dinosaurs and even more fucked up things. Because it's in outer space, we don't know what the fuck is living out there. And we have a world that's not science fiction style, because it's just like the earth. Maybe one or two moons more, or two suns. :D
Maybe we find (unknown?) technology there, leading to the residents of this planet.
MAYBE we find the stuff we find right now, indicating that "we" are, or were, the residents.
Space shit, yo!
You forgot mutant robots so I just voted for regular robots. :(
Also, why no pokemon? Imagine cooking and eating a couple pidgeys or trying to fend off a herd of rhyhorns with just a rock, oh the possibilities!

Doood, it's in the EARLIEST of development. That's what alpha is. It means the game devs don't yet know what the hell they really want to do with the game. That's why it's kinda weird to have a pay Alpha when so much of the game is still undecided.
You want post apocolyptic? Let's just throw this shit into the world of Jurassic Park. There. Dinosaurs have destroyed everything, because they're fucking big and don't know how to not hit everything with those damn tails. And then raptors, man. Raptors fuck yo shit up like nothin else.
Military
It would be pretty epic seeing a brontosaurus peak it's head over a range of mountains
humans and dinos did not exist at the same time.....EVER!
Let the Barney Love go, and embrace something else.
Nothing -NO
Add Zombies Back -NO , go play dayz
Mutant Animals -NO, Animals drop ammo and shit ? doesnt make sense
Mutant Humans -NO, similar with zombies
Dinosaurs - NO, there r already another dino survival game coming out
Robots - Would be interesting but NO , doesnt match this type of game
too advanced
(unless you are going to add some "future weapons/buildings" )
Other Players - Yes but also need some npc for farming
Military - NO , Other players would become the "military" , no need dumb
npc shooting around
Giants/Mythical Creatures -Maybe add some Mythical creatures as "boss npc" to some
specified area (loch ness monster on lake ? lol ) but definitely not
the right npc to farm
Aliens - NO , Same as Robots
Tribe/Caveman -Yes , Put them to Guard Chests/treasure or Drop weapons make
more sense than others , they use spears, hatchet....... as close
combat weapon , bow &arrow (or handmade Guns) as long range
weapon , so you can not jump on a foundation and hit them to dead
with a rock , More challenging More FUN !!
If you want more fun and realistic environment , tribes definitely is your choice!
+1 exactly what i thought
fffffffffffffffff
PLEASE for the love of God and this game, do NOT do military this game is too fucking fun to have a Day Z bullshit add on, MAKE something New that hasn't been seen on a game like this. This game is the coolest game Ive seen created in such a long time. PLEASE make it something cool and genuine it doesn't have to fit any scenario or anyone expectations just make it fun and exciting and possibly scary at night. Also someone mentioned tameing animals as pets. That would be cool as hell.
