• What should replace zombies?

Clones of our characters. Because in a post-apocalyptic world, the only real enemy is ourselves.
In rust... are you people serious? Have you guys played the game. Its a survival game. Why don't they just focus on i dont know... survival?
"Survival" as a genre does not dictate what you are attempting to survive. It could be about surviving against the elements and nature, military factions, or giant mutated cookie dough aliens.
Garry. This. http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1356208
Whoa this would be awesome to work in if not for replacing the zombies
I also want a 100 foot giant that will come and smash your buildings up – forcing you to work together to take him down. But I’ll have to sneak that past Helk.
You know the answer sir.
Why not cryptids? Not mythical creatures, but cryptids. You know, slender man, moth man, big foot. Can you imagine during the dead of night looking out your house and seeing rustling things, and then you spot two beady red eyes glaring at you, or there's a lightning flash and slender man is right there outside your window? At day these wouldn't look too scary, but they'd make night terrifying.
My personal vote is giants and mythical creatures, followed closely by mutant animals... military is just boring
"Survival" as a genre does not dictate what you are attempting to survive. It would be turning it into a different game and i feel like would be a waste of time and resources. Why do that when you can improve on what Rust does best.
I think some form of mutated human/animal would be cool, but have them so far mutated that they only slightly resemble what they used to be. Can make them all different too. Some only come out at night, some irradiate players around them, some are fast, some are slow, etc.
The mythical stuff is just a terrible terrible idea, lol. Basically if our choice is anything, or mythical, I choose anything else. Mythical does not fit in any form or fashion. I stand by my mutant military idea + adding small tented camps around broken radioative material canisters off of the path in various areas, to extend the map out (a large server setting).

All the current crafting and survival elements would still be there, which is really all it has at the moment. The game is not even remotely finished. No real storyline or world design has publicly been made official to my knowledge. Everything is just in as a placeholder. What Rust does best is very likely going to change by the end of development from the present.
The mythical stuff is just a terrible terrible idea, lol. Basically if our choice is anything, or mythical, I choose anything else. Dinosaurs. Do it.
How about a huge mixing bowl of mutant animals, humans, and military? Maybe even NPC player clones that are hostile also?
Each day cycle something new pops up randomly picked from the Poll. Weighted by it's pool votes
I just signed up to just vote anything else than military. Mutant animals!
mythical does not necessarily mean fantasy-style creatures that are straight from a tolkien book, though
Exactly. There are thousands of times more mythical monsters and creatures from all over the globe than what is typically thought of by westerners. Edit: Although not exactly "mythical," lots of the creatures found in the old "armchair explorer" guides from a few hundred years back could fit the bill quite well. There's a term for those books, but I am not thinking of it at the moment.
Mutants Animal + Military. And a huge fucking creature roaming the map.
Dinosaurs. Then the best way to describe this game will be DayZ + Minecraft + Stalker + Turok. Fuck ya.
I'm trying to think, "What is different in terms of function versus zombies?" Dinosaurs/Giants/Mythical beings could be, for their size and durability, very interesting. We'd have to be careful not to make them ridiculous, of course. Dinosaurs in particular in this category would fit the Caveman theme, I think, so that might work (and be a creationist wet-dream). Then again, I am picturing something "Attack on Titan-esque" with guys with bows running around trying to bring down giants (while another tribe attacks the first group). Zombies/Mutants-of-any-kind are all essentially the same thing and offer little difference sans environmental story-telling. I don't think this is the right way, as it hews closer to DAYZ, which we're trying to separate ourselves from anyway. Robots would be extremely versatile because they could take so many shapes, but you would have to be delicate with how you integrated them or risk making the game absurd. Military would make sense with the feel of the game now and would present a larger-out-of-the-box challenge over what we have now. That said, though they seem like a clean fit, they would be a little boring for me. On the topic of removing zombies/mutants/whatever entirely, though, it's not as crazy as it sounds. Adjusted loot-tables and airdrops (which drop smaller boxes over a much larger range for more even distribution) would also work well, and would encourage the kind of gameplay that we all love. It's an idea that plays to the game's current strengths. So that said, I'm torn. Right now, military is the best fit. Later on when we lose all the military weapons, giants/mythical beasts and things like that would be really fun. And removing this element all together wouldn't be a bad idea either. So yeah. I don't envy you having to make that call. EDIT -- something that might make the most sense is to remove the element all together right now (and of course adjust already-existing methods of item distribution to fill the void) and reintroduce it on your terms when we've reached the point in development when we have a clear goal/setting in mind.
How about real animals dem dolphins pls.
I also would like to see more real animals and maybe even some form of crops for us to farm.
Please tell me if there can be more than just 1 winner.

I Want, uhm I Want fallout. You know, Bomb areas, PROPER Zombies that dont know how to run like an athlete, and maybe some form of virus to create an arm on yourself, or you could just die of, the flu. Bomb shelters and deformed "precious'" that'd be fun, and like a mountain zombie, like a really fat miner who had too much cookies, stuff like that, but millitary. Millitary with guns, tons of guns Makes going out at night more scarier!
I voted Military as it would be the best direct replacement for the Zombies in the game world. They should all be in Anti-Rad gear so they don't die. All the other suggestions are good but I don't think they would fit into the world as a direct replacement. If you want mutants or other strange things I think they should be scary things that come out at night, or things that hang out the the woods that are dangerous and surprising. Stuff jumping off rocks to attack you or Falling out of trees. Survival = scary We need more things to be afraid of than just Players.
Go play Day Z.
Thanks for the offer, if you gift it to me, I might check it out. Steam account is tex_rob, hit me up.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cryptids
Having tons of cryptids would also be really fun. It would fit with where I think the game is going fairly well. [editline]20th February 2014[/editline]
Voted for mutant animals. Only posting to add, ugh, military, really? Every friggin game out there has military. It's not only been done, it's the only thing more trite than zombies. (not hating, just offering my opinion) -edit the next poster has it right. If you are talking tribal military, then I'm all in.
That's a good point -- military has been done to death. It's boring. A different take on that (tribal, whatever) could be cool though. <--- wants to make sure that the quoted post is seen
Spear chucking natives arise out of the nuclear holocaust? Doesn't fit too well. Dinosaurs? They've been extinct for 65 million years. Let'm stay dead. I say roaming and static groups of government soldiers and militarized bandits. That, or tree elves that spawn compound bows out of their butts.
Can't believe military is winning :( How fucking boring.
