• What should replace zombies?

I blame Triple A games that we keep getting from the game industry, nothing but COD and battlefield I hear nowadays.
Dinosaurs; here's how. Current map (we can assume the world) is one massive rad zone. How did it get that way, and WHY THE !@#! are there dinosaurs? Society invented it's first time machine. In order to obtain enough power to use it, nuclear facilities from around the world were tapped in a massive world wide effort to send us back in time. Shit hit the fan, instead of the time machine sending the target back in time, it sent the world back in time while also causing complete nuclear meltdown of all reactors across the globe. BAM!!! Motha fudging dinosaurs! You could even make them mutant if you want (meltdown pre or post time travel event). Sorry, that's what I came up with on my lunch break.
Those who vote military honestly don't know what they actually want. Humanoid AI will end up just disappointing people. Dinosaurs or Mythical Creatures are the best idea here, assuming Mythical Creatures kind of fits into the while mutated animal thing. Bring on the homicidal chickens and glowing deer.
This thread is a good example of why democracy doesn't work. OH SNAP
Let me take a moment to pose a question directly to Garry -- we're at an early stage conceptually. You've fantastic elements in place, but we're not sure of the direction the game is going in. All of these ideas would require large re-works, additions and nixes to elements already in the game (and all of them could potentially be lots of fun). The question I have is this -- what sounds like the most fun to you? Where do you want to take us? We all bought the game because we trust your creative ideas, and I'd say this -- dude, do whatever you think will be the most fun over-all. If that means taking out rads and rad-towns and adding in giants while we battle them with cave-tech, do it. If it means adding future-tech elements with robots, do it. If you're happy with something similar to what we have now, make the mutant wolves/bears a permanent fixture. If the idea of military bores you, for the love of God don't do it.
Can't believe military is winning :( How fucking boring.
Mutant military! The problem Garry, is you've written in radiation, you've written in military guns. Maybe ask this question without people knowing those things exist, what would you vote for? I think if radiation and military weapons weren't a thing, I'd say bandit tribes. Perhaps that's the answer. Remove all rad towns, remove radiation, add some wooden premade buildings, add bandits in them. You can add camps around the world then to have bandits at that are away from the towns. They'd be like the NPC human faction that we are all constantly warring against. You could easily replace radiation with disease, and just replace rad pills with antibiotics. You could say they are diseased cannibals or something. Just thinking as I go here, but the current things in game have backed you into a corner that military makes the most sense.
Having all of these diverse ideas is plausible! In the more densely populated city areas, the rusted remains of robots (yay alliteration!) can exist, while the barren wastes or overgrown wilds could contain mutated animals, dinosaurs, etc. The robots create a possibility for advanced tech although I would stress importance on balancing out the strengths and weaknesses of such things. I also think the radiated areas is the start of a good idea. It somewhat forces players to think about what equipment they bring out into the world. We could add a variety of Elemental or Hazardous effects. Obviously we can keep and tweak the radiation but also add things like acidic rain, where you might need some other form of protective gear. Poisonous swamps or something along those lines would be another example, forcing players to wear rebreathers that take up the head slot and maybe affect vision. My strongest recommendation, however, is to make the rust world just as dangerous as the players that inhabit it. Imagine two groups that are fighting over turf, a battle ensues that draws the attention of something big. A gargantuan creature breaks through the foliage and adds a third element to this engagement. Now the groups have a choice, do they continue fighting each other and let the beast have its way with whomever it wishes? Or do they become allies, if only for a moment, to take down this greater threat? These are just my thoughts. I hope they help to make this game as amazing as I envision it being.
what is meaned with military ?
Military. Please no. The players are the military, meaning that we are the humanoids in this game. Also, there are a gazillion other military themed games out there to satisfy those who want sniper rifles, noob tubes and RPG's. Mutant animals gets my vote. With giants coming 2nd. Killer rabbits anyone? http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XcxKIJTb3Hg
Plot twist: military option was added to get a list of players to remove from the game. :tinfoil: But seriously people come on... Don't listen to the poll Garry! Do what's in your heart! As long as what's in your heart is what I want.
How about a mixture of the three raddest replacements? Dinosaurs, aliens, and mutants. To give variety to the dinosaurs, we make them aliens or mutants. Mutant/alien 'saurs could basically be anything, like a brontosaurus with three necks and a hunger for naked flesh. If we go with aliens, we could add in end-game boss enemies, like robot dinosaurs or mechs. C'mon, people. Generic spec-ops tacticool bandits are boring. Let's have alien robot dinosaurs.
Aliens are for kids the rest is ok :D
DINOSAURS!!!
Another thing Garry, you talk about adding patrol helicopters, what do you expect people to say fits? Stop adding stuff that fits that, military weapons, radiation towns (right there it means humanoid something, because animals don't just naturally want to live in a town like a humanoid would), patrol helicopters, etc.
Military? Really? We don't need another generic military shooter. Come on people. Let's try something NEW.
I think dinosaurs would probably fit. I could see there possibly being some military presence but military by itself would just be stale.
I'm so sad that military is winning. If that ends up happening it'll be my brains all over that wall :suicide:
I actually don't understand it. Military? Like, seriously, guys? There are so many issues with it jesus chrisp. How are you going to explain some military guys hanging around radioactive towns for no reason? Are new players to be killed by AI military too? Who's gonna be the first to start farming military for military equipment?
garry, the rest of us who didn't vote "Military" would like to ask you to overrule that if it wins and pick something else other than "bring zombies back", because we don't need the forums/game being flooded with "it used to be DayZ + Minecraft and now it's CoD + Minecraft" idiots. Please. I would rather this be the Jurassic Park game that never happened more than generic boring military forces being thrown in.
I see a lot of people voting for "Mutant Animal" but how is that any different then the crap we have now? Dinosaurs are awesome, not many games are using them as enemies. There is many different types and sizes and they do kind of fit the atmosphere of Rust. Maybe add more heavily forest areas and they would be great!
please not Military, we have enough bandits already

Right now we have "red stuff" but it could actually be mutated funky scary crazy looking animals. That's what I think people are really voting for (not what we have now, which is a placeholder). edit: but i agree I would be totally down for Dinosaurs as well.

Let's be realistic here... we need something DIFFERENT. If you want a building/crafting/Tribesman-cannibal type game: Buy The Forest when it comes out in a month or two. If you want a building/crafting/Dinosaur-type game: Buy The Stomping Land when it comes out in a month or two. If you want a building/crafting/Animal-type game: Buy Minecraft, it's already out. If you want a building/crafting/Zombie-type game: Buy any of the 1000 games out like that. We really do need something different and intriguing. (P.S. This was not an advertisement for those games, just sited for example)
Don't forget the game Planet Explorers for a game with basically dinosaurs
I propose that "Military" vote option be changed to "Titans". 30 Low Quality Metal + 20 Low Grade Fuel now crafts 3D maneuver gear. :quagmire:
maybe not dinosaurs, but perhaps, pre man or early man type animals? saber toothed tigers? wooly mammoths? also, I'd like to see a few NPC's that are nocturnal only. give people another reason to like night time a bit more?
I'm kind of disappointed that a plan, or at least a vision, isn't already in place. In fact, i refuse to believe that there is no vision on what you'd like to see in the end product. So my vote is this: take your vision, just a little piece of it - just one of the possibly scores of hostile environmental threats - and work on that. A facepunch poll is meaningless, especially when it seems as though the replacement will be the same thing with a new model (one runs fast, one runs slow but has more HP, everything drops the same stuff).
fffffffffffffffff
Please do not add dino's it just kinda ruins the game to have people trying to survive with guns and dinosaurs run around eatin gpeopls faces off. Military has my vote, at least
I'd like a mix. Giants/Trolls that need large groups of well armed people to take them down. After it dies, it should drop loot for everyone individually and right after he drops the loot, the server should switch to PVE settings for a few minutes to prevent a giant battle (for a few minutes, you should have some time to grab your stuff and walk a few inches before a player can shoot you). While this "friendly countdown" is ticking, NPCs are attacking the players, wanting some of the loot. Tribes and/or dinosaurs would be nice. And not too few of them. This needs to be a real threat, just like the giant. It shouldn't be a giant idiot slowly walking around. He should actually attack buildings/towns/etc. and cause some real damage. tl:dr: I'd like a mix.
sorry, after rethinking i actually like the idea of saber toothed tigers and mamooths
