1. Craft Paper Map 2. Add map to hot bar 3. Hold down 'G' 4. Congratulations, you can now see which compass direction your player is looking, live!
Why not a GPS??! Seriously, this topic is very entertaining
I have no problem with a compass being added as a hotbar item. But the same people who flounder about lost in the forest now because they have no sense of directional awareness will be whining later that it should be offered to fresh spawns, and they'll be right back on those same modded servers.
Why are so many people coming up with idiotic reasons to not add this simple tool? It fits the theme and there's some demand for it. That's more than enough reason to add it. It's not top priority, but it'd be a good addition.
Yes. "It's completely unnecessary" is such an idiotic reason. :v:
Yes. "It's completely unnecessary" is such an idiotic reason. :v:
Says who? You? Are ugly beanies and baseball caps necessary? Clearly development thus far hasn't been based on necessity, but more so on what some people want. Some people want this.
Funny enough, when people ask for a compass they never actually mean a compass. They're all asking for an easymode HUD compass so that they can disregard any actual orienteering skills. If garry added a compass, it would be just like the map; a craftable item that you would have to put on your hotbar and access when you wanted to use it, thus nullifying the entire scenario the OP described. Seriously people, just learn to use the sun.
There are reasons to have a compass in the game, and they are similar to the reasons we have them in real life. They work in the dark, they don't require you to know the time of day to get an accurate bearing, etc. A makeshift compass like the pin in water type described above would work to point you at magnetic north, but it would not work under any kind of movement. It would require stopping and letting the needle settle for several seconds, so getting a real time HUD type indicator wouldn't make sense. A toolbar item like that I could get behind. Something you need to stop and stay still for a few seconds to get a reading with. Any movement during this time would require starting the timer again. Once the time is up, get a momentary indication of the direction you're facing. I think that would be ok. I think moss on the north side of trees would be even better.
I honestly don't get how it's so hard to figure out North. Once I've made a map I know which way my base faces and can figure everything else out from there. Even after I've left my base I know which way I've run and turned and still know what direction I'm facing and as many people have said, if I get confused there's a map. You don't need to have markings on it, just a blank map will tell you exactly which direction everything is from your current position if you just pay a little bit of attention.

The Dev's do not want you to be able to have such luxuries. Why can't people get this through their heads.

Seems a bit at odds with things like the candle/mining hat, lanterns, code locks, higher tier tools/furnaces, really the majority of craftable items in the game. But it's good that you're here to speak for them. I'm not asking for anything, I'm well trained in navigation. I was saying I wouldn't object to a compass with limitations like I described above. The person who knows how to find their way around is still at a distinct advantage to those who need to use that shitty compass. But for those who just stink at orientating themselves (I play with people like that) it might be worthwhile.

Perhaps it's not already in the game because they haven't gotten around to it. What I'd like to see is the map changes to where the player is always oriented in the same direction on it, and the topography moves as you do. This would make the map less 'instant orienteering" and bring a compass' usefullness to light. Or players adapt at sun navigation and landmarks would be able to forego the compass entirely. As it is now, though, not only do we not really need a compass, but we don't even need torches at night. As well, again, this was nearly two years ago when that was stated

Buddy please. Your comprehension is as bad as your spelling.

So, look Pal my comprehension has been the same as when I first started playing on a browser...I at least get it, you however... And how is my spelling bad? Oh...wait, your name? Who gives a fuck about spelling your name right.

You making up your own theories about a post he made a year and a half ago is far from evidence that you know what you're talking about. So if your comprehension was this bad back then, you have my pity. But at least you managed to pick up that at one time the game was browser based, even if you weren't actually around for it. Nice try though, gg.
Fucking city kids. "Moss on trees" is another way to determine direction (hint - moss always grows on the north side). So when Garry says they're adding a compass and moss on trees, he's making fun of it for being a fucking ridiculous idea.

Or Washington, then it grows on every side.
As the op I'm not 1 that gets lost easy but I just think the compass would open up so much. My thinking goes. Collect sand, make glass, use said glass to make compass. Also the glass could be used to make other items. I am just trying 2 think of other ways that this great game could progress, as I feel it has got a bit stale the last few weeks. [editline]12th October 2015[/editline] Looks as though i opened a shit storm on the compass front! All views and opinions welcome as long as they are in the spirit of looking towards rust progression. Also note to the post above I'm a country guy nothing but fields and trees where I live.
i vote for compass every loser in a survival show has a compass!
Map already has compass... But I like your idea of glass as a new resource you could get from sand. (Or find in radtowns?)
Glass has always been something I think they missed a trick on, but then what would I know I only play games, I have never been part of a Dev process so maybe they already have plans for this that I missed somewhere, or maybe they just saw it as a waste of time who knows!
What harm will be done if a compass is added? It fits in as it's a survival game. If people like it they will use it, if they don't they won't.
I would not mind having one, but seriously, why is there such a discussion for such a small thing? Build a paper map, open it and see in which direction you little position marker is looking - boom, its like using a compass.

Wow, how do some of you guys get by in daily life? Sun rises in the east... not north. You can basically make one for 500 wood. Top of the map is north. For the guys complaining about not being able to coordinate an attack or whatever... that's your own communication issues.
i vote for compass every loser in a survival show has a compass!
Then why doesn't CORALLLLLLL!!!!! have a compass from the walking dead?
Rock + Tree = Wood. 500 x Wood = Paper Map. Compass in under 2 mins... :goodjob:
Why is this thread so popular again? There's only so much discussion you have over a compass.. obviously there should be a compass. Smh
