Did they just remove tool raiding from rust and made c4 raiding 2x as hard?

Look at the current state of servers. It's hard nowadays to find a server that is not raided!
So yeah I like raiding and will make game play more interesting, although I'd like to see some boost to crafting times as the game is already suffering. The update will make things worse.

They should change the name Rust in 'RUINED'. All in caps ofcourse.

What crafting times do you have a problem with?
Gunpowder? Or Barriers? Because most of the crafting times are very slow. Especially when you need a bunch ( like barriers to put around your base ).
This update will make what worse? That raiders need to work more or smarter? From my point of view the lack of proper defenses has been making the game suffer a lot the last few months.
It has made it WAY more fun to be raiders but not fun at all being the raid victim. Especially as 90% of the raids happen when people are asleep. I see the result on a few popular youtube servers, where the amount of people, ... you know them by name because so few people stay beyond the first few days after a new patch.
And the amount of people getting angry in the chat when they get raided day after day, sometimes multiple times per day.

I warned several times that the developers needed to rebalance the game because it was so focused on one side, that it became ridiculous. This extra protection is not bad but like with the ladder protection, you can easily avoid paying the double C4 costs by playing smart. That is what the developers seem to be going after. Lets face it, they where just as able to simply half the explosive damage on all parts. But by making the front stronger and the back weaker it adds another layer of complexity to raiding and base building. And does add some extra protection ( small to big, depending on how smart or dumb the raider is ).
Bah! Everyone in here whining and talking strats - There is no strat.
You target a base.... find out who lives there, hit F1 and type status... when he is offline you go there with a bag full of picks and cheese into his base.
NO ONE and I mean NO ONE sits in their base while people are pick axing their walls down and does nothing.
Tool raiding is PRIMARILY an offline tactic used by cowards and they pretty much removed it. This is great news.
So. ~70 pickaxes to raid a stone base? I'm just gonna make a massive base out of stone, who needs armored?

Tool raiding isn't gone, it's just the outer layer that's protected, which means anyone with even a small pile of c4 will be able to get into the sensitive inner wall areas and be able to switch over to their tools.

Are we positive it is just the "outer layer" ? How does the game even determine that? It seems to me ALL "external" sides of all walls would have this protection. External meaning the side that is meant to face out.
Each wall / door has an inner and outer texture. All outers are strong, all inners are weak.
So depending on the build someone could face outer textures on his main outer wall and then change it up to face the stronger walls in certain directions to "try" urge people in false directions. like the "Easy" facing walls lead you to a dead end in the base. The difficult walls would require c4 etc.
Won't the blast radius of C4 still hit the inner side of a wall and the outer side? Does this mean C4 no longer penetrates a wall?

I believe it would calculate from whatever side the blast started on. So if your walls are flipped it could hit the inside. Probably people will start raiding bottom/middle up since going up through floors would be more cost effective.

C4 still seems to have the old 3 tile range. Nothing indicates that they have changed that.
What will happen is:
|_ _ _ _ _|
......^......
If you blast the outside on a middle part, it will take you twice the amount of explosives to breach that exact wall / door / whatever.
But!
|_ _ _ _ _|
.^...........
If you target the corner piece, the part you attach the C4 will still take double needed. BUT!!! The left wall that is close to where your C4 is placed, is a "inner" wall. As the C4 blast damage ignores walls and travels up to 3 tiles deep, 80% of the blast damage of your C4 will hit the "inner" part of that wall.
So it will take you 6th C4 to blow the part that you are blasting. But before you even finish blasting that part, the side piece will have been destroyed when your up to the 4th C4. Its the same effect ... you enter that layer of the base with only 4 C4 used instead of 6...
The same principle applies to other parts of bases. So it will become more of a game trying to figure out what parts are the best to blast. Instead of blasting in a straight line directly to the center ( and the potential loot room or stairs ), now you need to plan how you want to blast.
Technically, a strong base design with this game mechanism in place is a base between rocks.
[]_____[]
..^^^^...
So a enemy trying to breach corners for the weaker spots can not get them. But as "nature" has a lot of uneven rocks etc, you will end up exposing some parts of your base to the side-blasting.
Someone should test it out. Because unless they stopped blast damage from penetrating or traveling as far, it seems as if the wall will still come down with the same amount of C4 because as far as the game is concerned your damaging the inside too. Plus the corner thing that benjiro said.

5 c4 for armored walls, 2 for stone still.

Interesting. Looking forward to seeing how this plays out in-game. Also looking forward to the devblog to see the full explanation to this.

Now C4 does 210 damage on Armored walls. That matches up with the increase they did from 350 to 420 in the last patch. And now with it halved, its indeed 210. That explains why we assumed 3 C4 = 6 C4.
Original: 350 * 3 = 1050 damage
Last patch: 420 * 3 = 1260 damage
Now: 210 ( exterior ) * 5 = 1050 damage. And 420 interior * 3 = 1260 damage.
So it will be:
5 outside, 3 using side blasting ( as side blasting has less damage but with the 420 damage on interior you can probably use 3 C4 ).
No problem with that.
Surprise about the stone wall using only 2 C4... Did they also increase the blast damage on C4 in the last patch and nobody noticed the increase? In other words, it will require rethinking but its not like a massive jump toward base protection.
