Someone posted a fix on the Steam forums. http://steamcommunity.com/app/252490/discussions/5/613948093884110721/
Copy steamapps/common/rust/legacy/rust_Data/Plugins/x86/ScreenSelector.so to steamapps/common/rust/rust_Data/Plugins/ and to steamapps/common/rust/rust_Data/Plugins/x86_64/ Now you can to lauch and to play Rust but without first config window
Can confirm it works.
Doesn't work for me. A black window appears and closes right after that.
Doesn't work for me. A black window appears and closes right after that. No error messages in the console, log ends with
Have you already tried this
I copied *all* libs in .local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common/rust/rust_Data/Plugins/ into the subfolder x86_64. Now it works.
From earlier? I think it was in response to a similar error.
They were symlinked and corrupted as the files they were pointing to for some reason don't exist. I removed the symlinks, verified the game cache, it downloaded those files. Now there's nothing in /rust/rust_Data/Plugins/ except the x86_64 directory where the files are located so there's nothing to copy. After replacing ScreenSelector.so I don't see any difference, same crash as before. I'm on the main branch btw, on development-debug /legacy/rust_Data doesn't exist. What branch are you on? [editline]26th January 2015[/editline] Checked all branches, no luck. Anyway, I think it's not just a library issue, it shows the stacktrace that's inside libmono.so:
Native stacktrace: /opt/SteamLinux/SteamApps/common/rust/rust_Data/Mono/x86_64/libmono.so(+0x915d2) [0x7fd0559dd5d2] /opt/SteamLinux/SteamApps/common/rust/rust_Data/Mono/x86_64/libmono.so(+0x3483b) [0x7fd05598083b] /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpthread.so.0(+0xf8d0) [0x7fd05cff98d0]
I'm tired of this and consider the game to be in a garbage state. The devs don't care much about Linux, it's obvious. Better play Dying Light, it seems to have zero-day Linux support and it's an AAA title. This attitude is what I'm ready to pay for.
Well, the game starts now after the huge 600+ Mb update. There was no sound but after removing that /rust/rust_Data/Plugins/ dir and verifying the cache it was ok. Now I'm stuck on the old good issue: there are no servers in the list. It shows the server count but nothing to connect to. At least there's some progress.

Copy /SteamApps/common/Rust/legacy/rust_Data/Mono/ into /SteamApps/common/Rust/rust_Data/Mono try it, see if it works for you.
A server appeared after all. Looks like it works, I can walk around and light a torch. I'm switching with Alt+F where Alt is the modkey for AwesomeWM. So yep, works flawlessly. I also tried to launch Rust in fullscreen, all the same, no problems. I have no idea what "stuff" you're talking about but for me everything is in place except blueprints. I heard they're broken for the time being so you basically can't craft anything at all.

They're working for me now though, after I did what I said above. There's another thread about this (on the first page right now, can't miss it, if you can read) where screenshots are posted that show what I'm talking about.

Do you mean servers in the server list? I had to click them blindly to select, they're invisible, yes. For some reason I haven't connected your solution with the server problem, sorry. Thought it was for missing sound. I'll check it for windowed/fullscreen modes. [editline]14th February 2015[/editline] Well, it didn't work out. I switched to the development branch, copied legacy/rust_Data/Mono over rust_Data/Mono and launched it in windowed mode, correct? No servers visible, can be clicked though. I don't see how this could help at all, my legacy/rust_Data/Mono contains only i686 library in the directory x86, so copying it over the main Mono dir replaces just configs for it, not the library itself. Anyway, it's either your config differs heavily from mine or the workaround is somewhere else. Thanks for helping though.
Hey, by any chance, do you have blueprints visible? I can craft the same way I connect to server, i.e. blindly. [editline]14th February 2015[/editline] So, it really works in the windowed mode but not only going fullscreen makes servers and blueprints invisible, even resizing the window does so. I've filed a bugreport.

I found I can start in full screen and it works ok unless the screen is resized. I'm inclined to think what I said has something to do with it, because if I blast all of the Rust directory and reinstall, it doesn't work for me until I copy the files over.
I'm inclined to think what I said has something to do with it, because if I blast all of the Rust directory and reinstall, it doesn't work for me until I copy the files over.
That's strange. I removed the "etc" directory and verified the cache (so it's restored to the original state) and it still works like that, i.e. works until I resize the window. So no difference for me. My own issue was tied to the fact that I use Awesome WM, it's a tiling window manager and it resizes windows all the time even if they don't need to (like in fullscreen). Except if you run the game on a floating tag where windows behave like in traditional WMs. A friend of mine has everything working in both windowed and fullscreen modes, he uses Unity DE (+Compiz) which handles these things differently probably. [editline]15th February 2015[/editline] I asked that friend to resize the window and he observes the same behavior, everything wipes out. Well, not entirely everything, but the servers list at least. There's more UI elements that disappear. When you mine resources, green bars appear at the right with the resource quantity mined. The "Home" tab in the menu shows devlog entries. All of it disappear after window resizing. I suspect something just crashes like Coherent UI but why not the entire GUI vanishes then? Maybe it's not completely done on Coherent? Would be also interesting to test it on Windows, the game window seems to be non-resizable but Linux WM's allow to resize with Alt+RMB.
i have same issue can only play in windowed mode and am not able to resize that window what dissapears: main menu info from the right side, server names from server list, ingame chat, resource gathering info. so yeah..currently playing windowed
Try launching it fullscreen and see what happens.
when i launch fullscreen the noted stuff dissapears... because unity games seems to resize even if i start fullscreen.. it shows windowed for 1 sec and then goes fullscreen. edit: im using xfwm4 as window manager
On the bright side, those ugly periodic freezes are likely gone. A couple of days ago I had freezes for 1-2 seconds often, today there are only little FPS deviations, nothing serious. The freezes happened also in Rust Legacy so it's a pleasant surprise to have them resolved now.
so is this going to get fixed at some point or not.. anyone have news about it? cause its really nasty. every time i switch workspace or alt+tab the game and come back i have to restart the game because all the text went missing again. otherwise the game runs pretty smooth.
Hmm, this thread is no more relevant so it's better to upvote my bugreport instead. Or create a new thread about this particular issue.
