Honestly, for bosses I'd just add irradiated animals.
Take a look at STALKER, the most fearsome boss in that game is a fucking thing that goes invisible and rips your dick off. The other being soldiers which have gone mentally insane from radiation poisoning, and gone feral mode.
Just to make a point: Nature is a brutal motherfucker. Theirs a reason we make the quote, "Mother Nature is a spiteful bitch" in survival training courses, because everything about Mother Nature is a literal interpretation of Murphy's Law. Another thing to add into the fray is the fact that the most dangerous creatures on Earth... Insects. Not sharks, not bears, but little bugs that bite your hands and shit and cause you to get a infectious disease or fills you with enough toxins that it doesn't matter anymore.
Which brings me to another creature: Enlarged insects, rattlesnakes, and stuff like the Gila Monster lizard. All these creatures carry enough toxins in them to wipe out a grown human in nothing more then a few seconds. Gila Monsters being literally the size of a small carbine rifle, and are considered the most dangerous lizard in North America.
Rust is not a dayz clone.
It's more like a version of Wasteland Lite.
and for any of you who think the zombies are entirely played out, I beg to differ:
I played Breaking Point and saw some VERY world war z type moments while playing it.
same tapeworm kos dbags roaming the world, but the Zeds behave in a totally different fashion.
last time I saw my squad mate, he was texting me to make good use of his gear after he died.
he was in a field surrounded by about 20 zombies. he blasted thru an entire mag of ak47 rounds and maybe killed 2 of em.
this was the first time in a video game where there was literally nothing I could do to help him.
and I never could get close enough to get his gear, because when he fired that weapon, every zombie in town came toward it.
Breaking Point, at the moment, is actually better then Dayz.
Peace

I think replacing the zombies with AI humans sounds good. Especially because the zombies have no actual reason to be in the game, other than a way to get loot.
I bang around on a DayZ Epoh server that has armed AI kill squads.
not only does their constant gunfire make it more difficult to estimate incoming threats but the dayz ai is actually smarter then most of the folks on the rust servers.
and they shoot better.
but still it's a piss poor excuse for not having real pvp.
and the only reason real pvp won't work for this game is because the map is too small.
and I say that meaning, once they open up the FULL map, it's still gonna be too small.
Arma3 = Altis = the smallest map any game should have. ever

AI Military seems a nice idea. Roaming the map with heavy gears. There's always that scene from Dead Rising that I liked, when you go out of the mega store and some prisoners were killing everybody on sight with that military jeep. It was pretty scary cause you know you were vulnerable...
I'd like to see some stuff like that. And for the background, maybe something simple, "Rust Island" is irradiated, peoples and/or animals are infected and are mutating in dangerous monstrosity. (Mutants animals like that chicken things)
*inception sound*
The army is here to hold these monsters and infected people, and unfortunately we are the infected people and we are not allowed to leave the island.
To be honest, from a story line perspective, before you can decide what to replace the zombies with, you kind of need to know why people keep waking up in the middle of nowhere with no clothes and a rock.
Whatever explanation you give for this kind of defines the AI monsters in the first place.
Have they been sent back in time "terminator" style, are they slipping through a dimensional rift, are they waking up after days of "sleep walking" (in which case could the "zombies" be other "sleepwalking" people?) etc etc hell you could even be on the receiving end of a god game, where you are the random human that's been plopped into existence by a random deity who's going to keep throwing random things at you till you die, or he completes the level.
I know a lot of the FPS'ers playing probably don't really care about storyline, but the people more interested in the sandbox elements may well enjoy having some kind of lore there.
I kind of agree that there should be some kind of trash mob that drops basic gear, and that zombies aren't it at the moment; but I'd also like to see something bigger, and not necessarily "killable" (but maybe scare-off able) that creeps up on players and scares the hell out of them every now and again, just to up the ever pervading sense of paranoia.
no offense, but storyline doesn't matter.
gameplay matters. you don't need to justify great gameplay with a storyline.
devs tend to do the opposite actually = try to pump up the lore to make the tepid gameplay seem more important.
if you REALLY wanna make it a "survival" sim with legit motivation =
solar flare blasted the atmosphere to hell and fried the grid. uv exposure levels have skyrocketed.
for most folks, it's only possible to travel around at night.
and everyone is dying of cancer slowly.
boom, done.
Peace

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not saying shell out on a writer to compose a tolkien-esque backstory of epic proportions, but it is easier to figure out where you're going (and FP have said they're unsure what to replace Z's with) when you know where you've come from, even if you don't actually ever release that info to the players.
I hope they replace zombies with zoombies, which are like zombies but with binoculars.
Or they can replace zombies with the common cold, leaving all male players bound to their huts near a cozy fire for days at a time.
maybe a hostile ai military as the bad guys. i mean, who else would have dropped you off on an island if not for sport or training for an army. makes sense with the patrol helicopter.
that would be awesome, better still if they started off with a small camp and slowly spread out over a large portion of the map building watch towers, barracks etc and they could only be removed if players managed to kill them all either through banding together or just having enough people holding strong bases that the military faction cannot progress past them, gets bottled up then slowly dies out cos they cant scavenge the resources needed to build more troops
Add aliens and predators. Why not? Ok its a joke.
I do not understand why to remove zombies. Just perfect them.

because most people say:
"look a zombie! This game must be probably dayz clone"
But rust got a completely different playstyle than dayz. i agree with you, they can keep the zombie, just overwork the KI and the game mechanic they got. (current mechanic is to distribute goodies)
Creepers. This game would be awesome with creepers.
Just add prawns to the game. One of the rad towns becomes district 43. Random saucers come beamin outta nowhere droppin leet ass alienware loot. Gotta kill hordes of prawn. Dickheads with rocks tryna take your sick ass blaster rifle shiet. lol
