except fp is like 75% unwritten rules
oh wait im ok with this as long as all current users are grandfathered in
no more registration except for rust forum 2014
We had a giant rules list before and people would still complain about things not being on the list.
We had a giant rules list before and people would still complain about things not being on the list.
I vaguely remember that list.
I like unwritten much better anyways.
I vaguely remember that list.

All i remember is rule 9 since i banned so many people for it. Break a rule on an alt and all your accounts are permabanned. That rule was the best.
No that's exactly it. You literally just banned a guy because he said he doesn't belong here, in a polite manner too. And what others have said is exactly my point. All you gotta do is go to any other games official forums and look around awhile. Do they get posts every single day asking why the mods are so rude and ban happy? No they don't, but you guys sure do and that should tell you all you need to know. Usually a gaming company wants their customers to like them, you know being good business and all. You guys are just like, hey our way or the highway and if you don't like it then fuck you because we don't give a shit about our customers, we'd rather be right. So yeah your forums, you're technically right. But you're still assholes.

thats kinda how fp works
if you say "fuck this i don't belong here" you obviously don't want your account so why do you give a fuck if it's permabanned or not
(pls poopstal and crapt this is not a "doesn't want to be here")
We had a giant rules list before and people would still complain about things not being on the list.
I don't think you can reasonably ban for things that people don't know they're not allowed to do
Banning for misplaced threads is silly too. I was having a quick look through Refugee Camp earlier and there were a bunch of people banned for that. I mean why not just move the thread like any other community would do?
It mustn't be that difficult to implement some sort of points system, whereby a moderator gives a certain amount of points for each offence (5 for misplaced thread, 10 for questioning the moderation team, etc) and then when the user hits the limit they get a ban. It's much more constructive, breeds a lot less ill-will towards moderators and the systems that drive the forum in general, and means you're actually creating a decent and fair support base for the people who've bought the game

Lots of complaints from people is the obvious price we pay for setting a higher bar for posting here than the vast majority of other forums. I can live with it since it means not having to worry about reading threads that make my eyes bleed all the time.

No no no please do not be dense. We're talking about rust subforums. General discussion does not fall under that category because it general discussions is it's own category not pertaining to Rust itself. I'm obviously talking about a "Clan" subforum for rust, a "survival/help guide" subforum for rust, a "news and announcements" subforum, specifically, for rust. Etc. It would make things so much clearer for everybody and not be the big clusterfuck that it is now.

we don't have the mod team or the time to do that
have you actually seen how many posts a minute there are
would also give a more permanent record of when you have been a dick - a public list of all your offences on your profile would be decent deterrent

We're a fucking huge forum, we don't want legions of people posting everywhere and making a mess lol. Bans are the warning here, that's how it works.
dude jesus christ don't lurk for a year, you'll waste a year of your life
No different to the system they have now, which I believe is
>click ban
>choose reason from a drop down list
>click confirm
Just set up a whole bunch of preset ban reasons and point values and have it autoban when the user hits the point value

fp's version of vB as it is right now is held together with faith and duct tape
trying to add something like that would be pretty impossible
Gran PC showed a pic of what the moderator interface looked like before he got banned.

please don't post about your medical problems just go and see a doctor we are not a hospital
the bottom line of the "boo hoo bans are too mean":
IMO the people getting banned right away were shit users in the first place and wouldn't have contributed to fp in any meaningful way had we not banned them
therefore why not ban them???/
Gran PC showed a pic of what the moderator interface looked like before he got banned.
it looks like this:

and for posts:

there's lots of other shit too, like the main forum page mod tools and the modcp itself, but these are the two we most use.
Then spend a year and lurk. Then observe how much better the Facepunch community is than pretty much every single other one on the internet.
What would happen if users spammed reports though? That person might get auto banned for no good reason without a mod looking at it. I think it would be abused too much.

I understand that this might look confusing and even intimidating. Trust me when I say that there is rarely, if every, any spite or malice involved in bannings. If they ban anyone on personal grounds (not counting being harassed) they will indeed get some shit for it from the other mods. At least that's how it worked way back when I was a mod.
The moderators follow a rather strict set of rules. If you believe that your ban was unjust you can appeal your ban in the Refugee Camp.

people seeking legitimate help with a video game they've bought shouldn't have to contribute meaningfully; they deserve a customer service and this is the only place they gonna get it
why am I posting in this thread I don't even own rust

Hey, at least it isn't 4chan! :v:
honestly, if you're not a dick about your ban
usually you can get it reduced or dropped
but if you do this bad things happen so don't be a dick

Yeah I'm always willing to reduce my bans, as is every other member of the moderator team. You just have to not be a tit about it to us and make it clear to us you understand what you did wrong and how it won't happen again and we'll be more than happy to talk reductions. Unless of course you're someone REALLY awful in which case plz go
people seeking legitimate help with a video game they've bought shouldn't have to contribute meaningfully; they deserve a customer service and this is the only place they gonna get it
That's just false. If you want to get help in the first place, you have to make meaningful help requests. People going "THIS FUCKER JUST SHAT ON MY DICK WTF" is entirely the kind of shit we want to avoid.
