He was using the cutting wires as an analogy. GG.

DOS stands for "Denial of Service" and DDOS stands for "Distributed Denial of Service", which means that these hackers are literally going in and cutting phone lines.
Pay attention to the word in bold. It's not an analogy.
Pay attention to the word in bold. It's not an analogy.
I think it's kind of obvious that I intended it as an analogy :)
Finally someone who agrees with me,I have been on so many servers arguing this very point. Cookie for you. But yeah your ddos analogy lol.
I think it's kind of obvious that I intended it as an analogy :)
It's not so obvious in your original post.
It's not so obvious in your original post.
Actually I was finally able to fix it. *Removed the badgering thing, even though I still feel badgered. I like badgers, actually. They're kind of cute as babies.*
Actually I was finally able to fix it. Please feel free to continue badgering me.
I'm not badgering you, I'm supporting an opposing viewpoint (and I was right). Do you really need to be such a poor sport?
I'm not badgering you, I'm supporting an opposing viewpoint (and I was right). Do you really need to be such a poor sport?
I feel heckled/badgered because even though I changed it you still feel the need to remain on this thread and reply to everyone with a negative comment about my attempt at helping people. I'm not being a poor sport, and there was no opposing viewpoint. People just took my "Literally" way too literally. You have to understand you're talking to a mildly sarcastic gamer girl. I'm not someone to be taken literally, lol.
gamer girl
Why did we need to know this.

This thread is at the top of the goddamn Rust forum list.
Why did we need to know this.
It's kind of my thing that rolls off the tongue. "Mildly sarcastic gamer girl." Most gamer girls are hardly sarcastic and seem to be a little more on the emotional side.. O_O Not all of them, but a lot of them. >_> If it disturbs you, please continue to stare at the text "Gamer Girl" in utter disbelief that they may actually exist. And may actually exist, as in, we might actually be aliens... We just want to probe your brain.
There are only 2 reasons I'm still here. 1. But now that I know you're intentions, I take back the badgering thing. Though I still feel badgered. Which, in fact isn't actually a bad feeling, because this gives me a great distraction from homework and other things that I should be, but in fact am not wanting to do. That and maybe your name also made me think of a badger name.
you need to not worry too much about the trolls they will pipe up and then disappear when you ask them to provide you with what they think should be on there because they dont know in truth. unfortunately however people like to complain and no matter how much understanding you throw at them they will always find something to moan about or be unhelpful. good post and good way of putting things without confusing the hell outa everyone with babble noone really understands.
While playable, the main purpose of this stage is to test functionality, revising the code base, fixing major bugs, implementing minor additions, and troubleshooting server connectivity.
I would like you to prove the last part of this sentence. I agree with most of the sentence, but I am more or less sure that troubleshooting server connectivity is not part of "our testing", the people who have bought the game. Maybe there are some exceptional cases which could go under troubleshooting server connectivity. Again, I am more or less sure that architecture library exploit being abused by "DDOS'er" does not go under any alpha game testing or troubleshooting. Game bugs and servers being really bad are two different things, same as alpha and beta stage of the product.

He was in fact providing plenty of information, but I think his method of delivery could have changed, and he could have ceased after the post had been fixed. The reason the post did not change sooner was mostly the issue with my browser in which it refused to redirect me to the editing page. Happens. And mainly it was a rant with the intent to educate people with what I knew, and furthermore stop all the rage towards Facepunch. Though it seems in the process a lot of rage and eyerolling was then directed at me. And I edited it so it was a lot more clear and a lot less clutter, which probably helped.
I would like you to prove the last part of this sentence. Game bugs and servers being really bad are two different things, same as alpha and beta stage of the product.
A lot of game developers use the Alpha stage to process server connectivity by offering Alpha keys. My professor said something along the lines of "Alphas are also a great way to troubleshoot server connectivity for multiplayer or online games. -Yadda yadda yadda- If the people are able to connect, they can fix any minor connectivity bugs, -yadda yadda yadda- mend firewalls, -yadda yadda yadda-" I think it kind of falls under "Mending firewalls" when it comes to testing server connectivity. Simply put, it's a way of opening up the game prior to the release, and ensure that things like the uLink exploit don't happen during the release. Thankfully it happened now, during the alpha, so they can fix it now, defend against it now, and hopefully prevent it later on. In fact it's not a DDoS thing, it's an exploit in the third party itself. Again, something to troubleshoot. Though at the time people were still complaining about DDoS "hackers" and thus I decided to keep the information available.
Well now people know what a DDoS attack is. Thanks for telling me in a friendly manner. Either way, I still don't feel it's facepunch's fault, and I still want to smack the monkeys with a spiky bat. ^_^
Where can i get my spiky bat and we can do it together :P
Where can i get my spiky bat and we can do it together :P
We didn't choose the thug life. The thug life chose us. By providing us with people to smack with spikey bats. <3
This is going to be my first post here but I want to add my 2 cents to it. I just bought the game like half an hour ago, and I am well aware this is Early Access and an Alpha Build. I do not expect a finished game, I just would like to have some fun and hope this isn't going to be a KOS-fest. Every bug I encounter will be reported and every function in this game will be tested to its full extend.
I'm a she.
Here goes the attention seeking. "Look at me, teenage boys, I'm a girl!" Also, your example is terrible, you don't understand what "hacking" means nor what DDoS actually means, nor any of the other stuff you went into. Please, just leave now. You're making me frown. You're making me frown.
Oh. Turns out I did say "I'm a she." Mostly because I hate being called a guy. It's kind of a pride thing. And plus, it's much more fun to screw with people when they know your gender. (And people seem to have fun imagining we don't exist.) I also would like to say I'm not attention seeking. I'm pretty sure if I was attention seeking, I'd be much more creative about it. Like posting it in forums with a header saying "HEY GUYS, I'VE GOT BREASTS!" instead of "What "alpha" and "DDOS Means" I do in fact know what hacking means, what DDoS means, and what an Alpha stage is, mostly because I'm studying to be a game developer and have a decent grasp on most subjects. Hacking: To cut with rough or heavy blows. Hacking (Technical): Accessing unauthorized data within a computer system. DDoS: Distributed Denial of Service DDoS Attack: Multiple sources flooding a single server/network with packets of information with intent to render the server unavailable. Please let me know if you need any more information.
wait what, are 12 year old kids "monkeys" or "dumb" ? why ? you wher ea 12 year old to. why do people always laugh at younger people in game. thats just retarted.

When I was 12, I did stupid stuff too, and I was told the exact same things. Only problem is, when I was 12, I could at least spell "were" correctly. Oh. And I had a dog to walk back then too.
Thanks for clearing this up for the illiterates, OP.
@BlackScienceM either provide alternative information explaining what you think is wrong, or please refrain from making such posts in the future. Yes the explanation of DDoS is high-level and somewhat incorrect. however using the example of a power station that get overloaded because too many people are trying to draw power, is a very good way to explain a DDoS it doesn't explain its perfectly, but for the lame person its ample. @MorbidWolfess id just recommend rewording a few things if you have time, otherwise nice thread and its informative enough for most people. ill add one extra point; hacking in terms of computers (hardware/software) is not to gain unauthorised access, it originally root meaning is to put something together quickly, to hack together a piece of code to test. these days to hacking is to hack at software either to find exploits, flaws, bugs, or simply remove features you don't wish to exist which just so happens to be mostly removing DRM these days.
I love how you can have a person that's just genuinely trying to help and still get moronic bulldogs to bark bark at them just because "hurr i no dis betr dan uuu bark bark". Open a dictionary, learn the word 'analogy', and shut up.
*snip*
Kudos etc. etc.
-shit-
stop post (User was banned for this post ("Don't tell people to stop posting" - MaxOfS2D))
I do not work for Facepunch, I do not professionally advocate for Facepunch, I'm just a really pissed off game development/art and design student who still thinks 70% of the gaming population are morons.
Because of this, it also makes me doubt if your previous "proof" involving professors explanation about alpha is really true which also means every statement made by you might be viewed as biased. Just so you know, I am 2nd year student in informatics, working as system developer/manager. Please elaborate your self MorbidWolfess.

As the program opened up there was classes more for a degree in Game Development and Level Design. I took a couple of them, including a couple of basic/starter classes. Right now I'm in three art classes for this current semester, next semester I will be delving more into the Game Development and Level Design courses. ^_^ And yes. I am biased against people who can't spell. You caught me! :D
Come on guys, she's just trying to help, honestly. I honestly liked the post, and even though I spend alot of time gaming I don't usually go waste time and check what all those technicalities mean. I know what the acronyms mean but not in the actual "what it means" sense, so you helped me alot. And all these people going "durr hurr, i knw dis bettur", she's just trying to help "the simple people" with the analogies. Tl;dr enough shit posts.
You're right, boobs yay! Great OP I enjoyed it. Thank you!
I'm just going to leave this here: Edited: The invalid data in a DoS can cause the server to crash or slow down.
I'm just going to leave this here:
Very useful. Thank you. I thought DDoS was more like it attacked a more public server. I'll update my post.
