Problem is most all GSP's lease server space and bandwidth from the same third party providers as they could never afford to maintain Colo's all across the globe.
The way to get around this issue is to get a server in a lesser used city like Salt Lake in Utah.

lel. I have 2 servers on HFB and one been fine for a month, the other one I got for 3 days and at 21PM until like 2-3AM it got DDoSed for the 3 days.
Well I can tell you about playrust.eu.
I've bought their server because of their connection to Facepunch, fast updates and Oxide only support (plus guys from Oxide are connected to playrust.eu).
I can understand DDoS attacks and I know that nothing can be done to prevent this (except of nullroute and wait).
But enough is enough. I think I'm going to change this provider after this month sub is over.
1. CP is crappy. Each day I have problems in restarting server, starting my server and/or CP is down.
2. They are deaf to suggestions. Some of GSP found out a temp solution for lag bursts after latest patch and implemented a hotfix to mitigate this issue. Playrust.eu responded to me that they are not intrested in temp solution and working with devs for permanent fix. Great, days are passing.
3. Livechat is 99% down, catching some1 over there is a rare thing. Ticket response is random, sometimes it gets 2 hours and sometimes half a day.
My general feelings about this hosting company are pretty low. I'm with them over 5 weeks and all the time there was something wrong. Lags, unexpected maintenances, low SLA.
I own IT company myself and I'm used to some standards, no matter it is alpha or not. If you are offering something you are obliged to keep up with your customers.
Oh and currently my server is down (possibly since 6am scheduled restart) and I can't start it ;-)
I ordered HFB first, random crashes, slow at updating mods, I thought it was horrible, than I tried FPSplayers, none stop lag, when you hit a rock, nothing would happen, then 5 - 10 seconds later the rock would vanish and you would get spammed with what you got from the rock. So I switched everyone back to our HFB server since I figured out we can manually install the mod updates if they are slow. The server crashes at least once a day though, and does not auto restart. Everyone freezes and in the panel it still says x amount of players, I end up having to click restart for it to let everyone connect again. I like hosting on my own, I already own a server, so paying an extra 23 a month is annoying, especially for a bad server that runs like shit. If I tried 2 of the listed providers and they ran horrible, chances are all the providers will run horrible.
Yep, it's 1PM and still my server is down, no response from playrust.eu. :)

How do they handle ddos differently?
They simply don't in my opinion.
They may not be able to get the servers up any faster than any other gsp but they will at least keep you updated in a timely manner and not leave your dick in the wind. I'm in Jersey and I have a 24 slot server through Nfo for chivalry medieval warfare in Chicago where my ping never goes above 70. I also have a 50 slot server in Chicago for rust through hfb and my ping stays at a consistent 100+ even when I'm the only one on. The hardware and architecture they use at Nfo is just superior to any other host. They don't jam pack you on a box with 50 other people where you're all competing for bandwidth . When I pay for a service I expect it to work and I expect support to be helpful when things aren't working. So far from the current GSP's I've seen it's not looking too bright in that department. They are completely disoriented and unprofessional.
Finally got my server up on playrust.eu, this is their answer:

Like wtf, not the only one that needs assistance? No ETA, no nothing and after 2-3 ticket bump I receive such crap. World these days.
You having a laugh? servers haven't even been 100% configured yet.

This includes servers also.. They are trying to configure them as best as possible so the servers don't lag.
I've heard a lot of positive ratings from HFB and a lot of negative rating from Playrust.eu
Yes I'm having a laugh becuase it was not any of Alpha game issue.
Server process was down, couldnt even start/restart it.
The fault is on their side and their CP side.
What to do if you own company like this and have issue like this?
Monitor your damn process. It is that simple.
I'm not hammering them because Rust is in Alpha and things are happening.

The CPanel is rarely working and when it is it can be so laggy its just annoying.
I have moved back to multiplay. Their phone support has been awesome and I'm never left looking for support. Their servers do lag and have issues with mods at times but overall their communication and effort has been top notch

It's all about the support. HFB has none. I was with them for a month. For 3 weeks I had 0 issues. Then server went down... Took them 26 hours to answer my ticket. So I switched to Nitrous. That was on the 9th. On the 15th the server got ddosed. It's still down. I understand ddosing...but cmon...almost a week of downtime!!
My community had various servers with NFO for years and never had any issues of this caliber. I understand that the server files are alpha, but there's a way everything can be done in a timely fashion. Not this 26 hour ticket answering or weeklong downtime.
We need a high caliber GSP to show these popsicles how it's done.

That's mostly (if not all) BF4 being a buggy piece of crap and EA/Dice doing nothing to fix it. Not NFO's fault. EA is a perfect example of a company taxing GSP's per slot in order to host their game, while you don't get options you'd prefer.

No problems with the server I admin which is hosted with HFB. The key to avoiding never ending problems is location location location. If you avoid the busiest locations you have less problems, less need for support and a far better overall experience.

Do you realize that by your answer youre just avoiding a problem. We shouldnt have to avoid a busy location, GSP should be able to deal with their problems and offer a good customer service. Thats what you pay them for.
