Sure looks like that number's closer to 30k. Are you telling me that 75% of them are idling on the title screen?
Reusing code only makes sense if you're doing something that is almost exactly or exactly the same as what you previously did. The work that's being done right now is the hard work: Building and debugging the foundation and getting the basic building blocks done right.
In other words, the code that will later be reused when they can dedicate their time to pooping out 10 different kinds of trees to populate the various parts of the island, or what-have-you.
Get the fundamental laws of the universe debugged first, then fill that universe with stuff. Doing it the other way around means a lot of wasted work as most of the stuff breaks for one reason or another.
In-game players by looking at the Browser and yes the majority of the people are idling or even have Rust closed and yet its still running in background which I apparently in-game for a full 36 hours because I didn't check my processes for awhile.
Actually, now that I think of it, The Devs are probably doing this on purpose, so the hype dies down.

You sir.. get the moron award.. Your forgetting all the whitelist servers you can't see and private servers you can't see. Plus the list doesn't even show 100% of the active in Europe if your in NA and if your in EU you can't see NA servers servers. Please get your facts right before you say stupid stuff people MOCK you for. thanks!
I love how everyone keeps trying to spin the numbers, this place is damage control central.
The game is not doing well, the player base is quickly eroding. http://steamcharts.com/app/252490#7d
Between March 9th and March 16th Rust lost 8340 players.
I know that may not sound like a large percentage given how many copies Rust has sold but lets look at those numbers then. Rust has sold well over 1 million copies and has, lets be nice and say, 40k people still playing. So that would be 0.04%. Those numbers are impressive but not in a good way.
Say what you want but losing 8k players in a week is probably not a good thing. It makes you wonder what the word of mouth is on Rust these days. Sales are pretty strong but the new people are clearly not sticking around.
Now you don't understand things I guess. If 40k ppl are playing at once that doesn't mean rust only has 40k players. if every single player that played rust played it at the exact time then you would be right. Amazement in your ignorance lol. This game is doing fine, the only thing they should be doing is fixing exploits and optimizing the lag and ddos protection. Then they should worry about content once they can make the game run smoothly.
So it has been about three weeks since we've had an update for Rust. Does anyone have any ideas on when the next one is coming? I'm pretty sure I know what will be in it. The new inventory UI, bone fragments, bone knives, bug fixes, and fixed resource spawning. Does anyone have any ideas what else will be coming to the next update?
Like I said - probably new bugs. No offense to FP studios but small companies have less quality assurance (testers) to provide. Well - at least in my humble opinion. In any case as optimistic as I may be I really hope for a surprise as I think FP studios MAY (and only MAY) be looking at some redemption, because for christ sake every small server I have been playing on has been abandoned :(
P.S. to Face Punch - If my company which I work at released a software with bugs classified as MAJOR/CRITICAL, management would've rained hell :< maybe cause our customers are big bad angry ppl but still :) bug fix patch - (PATCH) and I do believe you smile at the satire of patched up blanky - is still a patch to be enjoyably usied as a product! :)
banned for that post?
is it just me or did they just completely back his statement up with that ban?
on topic though, some info would be nice even though it seems like the recent work stuff on trello is what gets added so that's a pretty safe bet to go by.
Predicting moderation in any form has always been a bannable offense.
I've been playing Dayz while waiting for Rust to update.
Been really enjoying myself ^_^
I love how everyone keeps trying to spin the numbers...
That whole post was a number spin used in covering up speculation/opinion. Player base will go up and down continually, and the higher the copies distributed, the higher the numbers will be in the peaks and dips.
my biggest issue with communication is that you have to collect pieces of information everywhere - twitter, trello, facebook, gaming websites, this website and god knows where else.
I'm saying this because some people seem to know more about upcoming updates and fixes than the rest.
Maybe if there were a few links on the front page to websites with extra info there wouldnt be so much repetitive "when" and "why" threads.

Do you know how to read a graph? Do you understand what an average is?
http://steamcharts.com/app/252490#1m
Games that are "doing fine" are not losing over 8k players a week.
Look at the steam chart, look at the decline. That is literally the game not doing fine.
I agree the lack of updates sucks but I'd rather them take their time and work on updates that are actually worth while. The game is so good and has so much potential to be really great.
Things I'd love to see:
- Player customization
- ability to dig (store items in the ground, etc)
- BINOCULARS!
- more structures / different forms besides basic
- farming / animal domestication
Just a few random ideas.
Sorry if I come out too rough, but I'm just sharing my opinion.
I don't see why they don't hire more people to their team... the game is growing... and so should their team. They have made enough money to be capable to hire a couple more guys to speed up the updates. I don't think they should spit out excuses such as these again;
"We’ve been dealing with a bunch of business stuff, and Helk is having some personal stuff to deal with"

Because you are completely ignorant of how the software development and game development cycle and environment work. It's not as easy "omg moneyz hire new peepl ya gurrl". You have to find someone who shares your vision, meshes with your team, is competent in what you're doing, and if it's a remote hire you have to be even more sure that they're going to pull their weight. Hiring in development in a small office environment is one of the hardest things to do because you don't have the time or money to just spend on the revolving door of mouthbreathers.

You must be an expert on this, perhaps lend them a hand?
You must be an expert on this, perhaps lend them a hand?
Therein lies the crux of the situation. I have no interest in them, and they likely have no interest in me. I've worked as a developer in startups for the last 10 years and I'm very good at what I do. I'm also not interested in game development or working with a company who considers Unity a viable platform to build on. So, we are at an impasse.
They would probably be happy to have someone with my experience on their team. The flip-side is I have no interest in Unity, and I have no passion to work or build on their project. I would be a 501 developer and thus a shit hire despite being technically qualified. That's what it's like working for startups though, can't hire people that are just technically qualified.
There are some retarded people in this thread.
Yes, there are less players at any given time on average than there were.
Yet no one seems to remember how the player base almost tripled in January, then went up another 40% in February.
Now it's down ~14% and it's failing? I don't think so.
People fluctuate. People do different things. (Oh my god, what a mind blow...)
I don't play the same game for months on end. Judging by the graph (that you all seem to reference yet can't understand), about 16,000 people bought the game in January. That was ~2 months ago, it seems perfectly reasonable that some of those people would want to take a break.
The game isn't failing. It's barely even gotten started.
And I_Waise_I, learn what you're talking about before opening your dumb mouth.
Facepunch is hiring. You know the new sky? The sky that gave me and many other people a 20+ FPS increase?
Ya, that was a new hire. And they're still hiring.
I wouldn't expect them to be very successful if they just gave anyone who asked a job. Hiring people takes time and patience... two things that a lot of people don't have but are necessary nonetheless.
[editline]17th March 2014[/editline]
And where is that guy even getting that they're losing 8k players a day? Do you not understand that this graph shows how many people are online at any given time?
Last I checked, it's perfectly normal for there to be less players at 3am.
In fact, if you look at the peak number of players for the week he mentions (March 9 - 17), the amount of players actually rises to 38000 players, higher than the rest of the peak numbers.
Do you also not realize that more people play games on the weekend?
Dumb. Just dumb people everywhere. :zoid:

I'll take it nice and slow this time. I'll even show my work.
http://steamcharts.com/app/252490#7d
If you'll look at Sunday March 9th at 10:00 you'll see Rust had 45,744 players. One week later on Sunday March 16th at 10:00 Rust had 36,759 Players. For a loss of 8985 players.
So now that's how I can prove with math that Rust lost over 8k players in a week. Not in a day as you misquoted.
Oh and also Facepunch purchased the sky from the unity store after they could not get theirs to work and then they hired the person who made the sky. The sky was a unity plugin purchased at the unity asset store. It was made before André Straubmeier was hired by FP.
Yes the game had amazing growth for a few months. Now the growth has stopped and it's on the decline.
There are indeed dumb people everywhere, some people see a chart with lines going down and think that means the player base is growing when it clearly shows that the game has less players then it did a week before.
100% agree. They are trying very hard to kill their golden goose. The massive amounts of people that flocked to this game will leave if communication and/or updates do not improve/increase frequency. Anecdotally, I think one just needs to look at the amount of populated servers now vs. in the past to see that this is already happening.
From what I understand, Garry has been at a conference/convention or something and Helk has been having personal issues of some kind. Garry ahs a kid to take care off, too, not sure about Helk though. The artists and a few other programmers are still doing some work I'm pretty sure, but a lot of stuff has been held up because of a lot of features needing to be redone for more things to be possible, like better players models for improved animations and minor clipping issues.
^^ Heh, I guess Facepunch will just have to cope without your heavenly input.
If you read through Garry's comments on playrust.com you can clearly see his frustration with users complaining that the weekly updates don't deliver enough content. I'm not at all surprised that we are waiting this long for an update especially with GDC being this week.
I don't understand why people keep saying Facepunch made there money and now could give a fuck less about delivering content. Guys 1 million copies at $20 a pop isn't shit. Rust has so much potential it would be insane to not put another year or two of work into the game to sell a couple million more. The more money you make the more money you spend.....

Not down 14%, down 50% or more: http://steamcharts.com/app/252490#3m

I think we'll see it be 1/3 of what it was at peak within the next few days.

And with the next update we will see it reach new peaks... and then drop again. The population for this game will be in a constant state of flux all throughout the development cycle, population drops at this point are nothing to worry about.

Did you even look at the links I provided? I don't think you did, if you did, you would see this isn't just a spike for weekends, or since the last update. You are allowed to have your opinion, but your opinion should be based off of more than blind faith.
