It also depends on the server. If the admin is not actively banning users for hacking, using aimbot and the like it will lead to your scenario.
If you are constantly killed on the same server just join a different one, keep doing this until you find a decent one.
Also, try not collect wood or ore out in open fields. Move to rocky or forested areas. Move quickly and always assume you are being watched.
Dont light fires at night. Cook your food and smelt your Ore in the daytime.

I guess that's why dark souls / fallout / skyrim / most horror games are adored by me
MMO's become very hard and stale easily
in any case OP, the key though to remember about players is even those perceived as "Bad" or "Bandit" players could actually just be hyper friendly messing around and playing the role of the bandit, you just have to look hard enough to find the right group.
You're probably going to be shit on a lot just finding that group but that alone may be fun.

When i first got my hands on rust; when they used a browser, i was extremely hooked. Right now i find playing the game to be annoying, the community of rust players are mostly assholes. Ill probably just wait like the rest of us for a fresh update, maybe it would decrease the 'assity' of players.

I generally play solo too, but I am pretty good at surviving the asshats, if you see me on I will group up with you it helps to have someone watch your back.

pan around you between every swing of the pick axe...
learn places to gather that arent near rad towns...
bring a fkn gun and defend yourself, start taking and stop being taken from...

You cant hit people from 1000 metres with an M4, it had to be a bolt action, easy to get a headshot.
When you start out, hug the mountains, run down to a pile crouch down where you're less visible then run back up into cover. Also move to areas that are less populated, the map is huge for 10-15 players.
You also just need to run around a bit to learn the map. No matter where I spawn, I pretty much know where I am, and where resource is in relation to my position. Just takes running around for a while to learn it. Use a map like rustnuts, to orientate yourself with the road, the road is just a big loop. You can run out to areas like Beach mountain which are unlikely to have people there on a small server, to gather resource. Next Valley is the king of resource spots, as resource respawns before you can even complete a loop around the field.
