• Rust crashing my 6850. NOT OVERHEATING, read please
AMD uses higher thermal power designs. Basically, your GPU is trying to suck more power from your PSU and failing to do so. Causes a choke and most of the time, a freeze/crash. Stick to Nvidia. Not saying that as a fanboy, saying that because I've used ATI/AMD many many times and I never have good results with them. Fans die, GPU's blow out... gets a little old rather fast.
Ive been using ati cards since I got rid of my voodoo way back when and never had an issue like this. And this is the only game it happens in. Metro last light takes way more juice then this game and can play it hours on end. There is definetly something going on here with Rust. Try adding something useful to the thread instead of useless dribble.
Same have happened here, I have played for weeks without any problem, and yesterday (january 03) after I did play for some minutes the screen go black and the only thing to do is force reset.

Running a Radeon 6850 with the same "no display signal" and fan at 100%. My gpu temp was about 60C when it happens. Using driver version 13.12
I was having an issue similar to this on my GTX 760 SC 4GB (I ran 2 in SLI). My screen would just go black after awhile and then my computer would restart. But this also happened in DayZ. I think one of the cards was just damaged.
Okay just wanted to update you all. Yesterday I ran the game for about 10 hours with no crash after using a program called RadeonPro to limit rust specifically to 60fps. I think this is in fact the solution for me (6850, latest drivers) because I tried running rust again without that program and it crashed shortly. Just wanted to let you know.
I'll give it a try and see, thanks m8. [editline]5th January 2014[/editline] Didn't work for me, did you do this in the tweak tab? The crashing only happens with Rust and Dementium 2. Everything else works fine.

Probably gonna take a break from Rust until the hackers get sorted out a bit and this bug finally gets a real fix. The fear of falling asleep at any time with a random crash coupled with the fear of wallhackers if just too much for me. Hopefully this gets sorted out soon I'd lover to get back into the game.
@Neowulf 13.12 WQHL? @Prexxus 13.11 which beta release? I know there is known issues with 13.11 (beta 9.5) and 13.12 as they are effectively the same thing. but can you both confirm the driver is version 13.251.0.0; additionally in the Catalyst control center is it set to optimize performance for multi or single monitor? and what settings do you have on for rust.exe
I just did a clean sweep of my drivers and downloaded the 13.12 catalyst suite. I am using a single monitor in this set up. Gonna test see if the driver sweep did anything... I doubt it though Also I have no settings on my rust.exe. All I changed was that it runs as admin. [editline]5th January 2014[/editline] .

[editline]5th January 2014[/editline] .
As far as graphics cards and operating system I am playing on two systems for many hours without this issue that have much in common to yours. Two separate systems both win 7 64 bit: R9 270X and Radeon 7970 (same gpu as you're card exactly I believe) - However on the 7970 I am using Catalyst 13.9 actually. The R9 is 13.12 but I think the 7970 is more in common with you're card.
Make sure in the game options menu that "Render Quality" is turned all the way down. When this is up, it adds a few lines to the config file that in my case, crash despite having the other stuff.
I had this exact same issue with my 290X. Turned out the 8 pin wasn't connected properly forcing the card to pull more power from the MB. After about 20-30 minutes my screen would just go dark and video signal reporting to my G15 via Aida64 would cut off as it does when the monitor powers down from inactivity. Make sure to check all power connections and reseat the card as well. If you're using a psu that was only 700W and is 2-3 years old it is very possible that the unit is no longer capable of providing adequate power to the gpu. I know it's a pain in the ass but get another PSU to test it or test the card in another tower to see if the problem continues to happen. Make sure that your bios and all drivers are up to date. Replace the thermal compound on the gpu heatsink. If the TIM (thermal interface material) is more than 2 years old, chances are it is dried out and is not able to transfer heat away from the gpu core as efficiently. By replacing this you can see up to a 10c drop in temps depending on what type of TIM you use.
With the latest patch, despite all of the previous settings, my game is back to broken. I'm not exactly sure what if anything changed, but yeah.
Could be a power supply issue. Crappy PSU was the reason I would get video driver crashes and BSODs with my GPU.
Ok so ive been reading for Rust Fixes lately and ran into you all on here, so far what ive read this has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SPECS OF YOUR COMPUTER!!!!!!! im running i7 4770 or something, and 32 gigs with gtx NVidia 770 3gig(its a beastly comp, not crazy but beastly) and ive been hearing the same thing all over, and all I can see above is lots of people wanting to play rust but possibly wasting your time trying to get it to work. SO MY FIRST QUESTION FOR YOU ALL IS, do you have an NVIDIA CARD? and/or WINDOWS 8/8.1? IF SO THIS IS YOUR PROBLEM!!!!! SINCE THE LAST UPDATES 4 OF MY GAMES DECIDED THEY DONT LIKE IT AND ALL CRASH AFTER 10min AT LEAST OF GAMEPLAY. The games that crash are Chivalry, Rust, 7 Days to Die, and Counterstrike Global Offensive. Ever since my last 2-3 updates the problems started to occur. Even my Server Owner on Rust told me its kuz you have 8.1 and NVidia card and he told me the fix is not out there, ive been searching for the past week and nothing, even tried all the bs above with nothing even helping my games out (specially Rust). I hate to be Negative but someone has to say it. IF YOU HAVE 8.1 and NVIDIA card THEN WE WILL HAVE TO WAIT TILL NEW UPDATES AND/OR GAMES DECIDE TO UPDATE AND FIX THEMSELFS TO WORK WITH THE NEW UPDATES, ITS SH***Y I know, but sometimes theres nothing we can do. Hope this helps and sorry to those who were hoping for a fix but I realy don't think there is one atm, and to everyone who has 8.1 and NVidia plz do what I did and complain to windows company or however you would like to do it, their jobs is to give us updates that are full compatable with no problems, THEY ARE NOT DOING THEIR JOB!!!! thanks and if by chance someone figures this crap out please let me know PS cant be your power supply or your computers, mine is BRAND NEW no more than a month or 2 old so nothing is wrong with your machines its programming in the new updates and the fact that the programming in rust is so simple that its actually at fault- thought id add that in [editline]19th May 2014[/editline]
With the latest patch, despite all of the previous settings, my game is back to broken. THERE MAY BE A PROBLEM WITH OUR STEAM AND ITS LAST UPDATE WITH OUR NEW UPDATES, he runs windows 7 and a decent graphics card on his laptop. I have both desk and lap both do crash and do the same thing my laptop is also 7 so therefore it must be a problem on steams end, but not sure, thought I would add this want to help anyway possible, since you guys seem to be all out I would like to see this information put to good use. GL all ill keep posting as I find new possibilities. -Scourge may also be our latest driver updates, because like I said before games with simple coding could be catching something down the line im not sure and the games that crash for me are 7 days Rust CSGO and Chivalry. will keep updating on new problems that need some looking into/solving. [editline]19th May 2014[/editline] ok so I just ran a troubleshoot for windows updates, and found 2 errors and fixed them going to test games now to see if it helped with anything, run as administrator hopefully it will find something [editline]19th May 2014[/editline] ok so the troubleshoot may have fixed something but did not fix game, going to find out how to troubleshoot steam next but for now I must go and take a break been at this for nearly 5 hours now I hope someone comes on soon and helps me figure out this problem. I feel I may be onto its source
-snip-
Also, no need to capslock every other sentence. It just makes it harder to read.
then it could just be rust needs to get their coding on, and sorry about caps thought it would help actually, instead did the complete opposite [editline]19th May 2014[/editline] but I had an issue today where steam closed before my game shut down telling me that steam is the issue, idk if your guys problem is related in any way but all I know is rust is F***ing up everywhere
but I had an issue today where steam closed before my game shut down telling me that steam is the issue
Shouldn't this tell you what the issue was? It was/is most likely something wrong with your Steam client.

HD7970 here and zero issues.

If it's still overheating then you might want to look at getting a better case or mount some more fans or something.

BF4 at max settings doesnt work it that hard even. Dust! How dare you! Not in my glorious white unicorn!
Huh, that's pretty strange... I guess the game just doesn't like it. I recently switched to a new case (from a crappy old one that I've had for like 12 years) and my CPU is consistently running 20-40 degrees cooler so I figured it was worth mentioning.
nothing wrong with steam client if this performance picks up, my problem was my NVidia Geforce Experience was unable to optimize this game before and idk if its due to my new graphics update today or what but I optimized rust and now it seems to be working just fine, almost been playing a full hour with just the occasional rust lag, if any of you have a client that is connected to your graphics cards and optimizes game id suggest you do this, sorry to all if this does not fix your problem, if anything else occurs ill be sure to let you all know. problem was most definitely fixed for me, the new NVidia updates fixed it right up for those who were having the 8.1 w/NVidia card issue
