Because you said "These skin colours seem like a poor decision." which is basically saying "The update caused racism." and that by removing skin colour from the game that would be better somehow -and not cause racism. Because we deal with socially retarded and disgusting people by pandering to them apparently? Pretend skin colours don't exist incase racist players get upset and speak out?
Yup, they disagree with you so immediately they are "socially retarded" and "disgusting". Clear sign you have a disabled mind, grats on being a broken human.
The irony of mostly white dudes complaining about their video game avatar on forums in the comfort of their computer room about how they are the subject of racial predjudice. It's almost a complete self-sustained cycle of irony. If I were some type of professor I would credit this as a source in some kind of human behavior piece.
I feel like this is a social experiment. Where random people are thrown into a world where they're put into skin of a different race. That they are not in real life. White people in real life can get a feel for what it's like to be on the receiving end of a racist slur since their character is black in game. Might make people think different in real life.

My issue is I shouldn't have to be subject to racist abuse while playing a game for that. I have actually been subject to racist abuse before, so I'm not entirely detecting the irony. I know how it feels and I'm not the kind of person to be getting a smack of reality here.
I've been playing today and been called "nigger" by about six different people. This is ridiculous, is there anything that can be done about this? These skin colours seem like a poor decision.
Pretty shitty people act like this. I warn then ban for racist language and slang on my server. There's no excuse for it.
I had quite a few people call me various racial slurs when i was white. Also, i think its good we're all talking about racism here. Its a step in the right direction.
I'm sorry but saying "This is the internet" doesn't wash; people get put in prison for those kinds of comments, even if they have been made on the internet.
Uh, no. How many people get put in prison for racist twitter comments? Sitting politicians do this kind of thing, too. The KKK can march down a street screaming about the necessity of white purity. At least in the US -- I'm not sure where you live, but being a jackass is totally legal here. If somebody in game threatens your real-life person, yeah, that's something different -- but not something I've gotten for my character being black. People in Rust, and all games in general, start bullshit drama -- the fact that it has a racial component now is silly anyway, because you're not really the color of your avatar. You're facing faux racists, who likely don't have the balls to do this shit in real life (and would likely only consider it in an online setting, which is my point), but you'd be hearing shit talking that's just as vile anyway (how many times has somebody you've killed spammed chat calling you a faggot, for instance?).

There is a difference, in my opinion, in being a jackass and being a racist. No one has ever spammed the chat after I have killed them.

No one has ever spammed the chat after I have killed them.
Glad I don't live there -- and I tend to think FP's philosophy regarding Rust is more in line with American thought than British anyway -- the game is almost half a social experiment to begin with. And it's besides the point anyway. Most of us here understand what the internet is, and how people behave on it. There are studies that have been done on the topic, and how anonymity causes people to behave in ways that they otherwise wouldn't ever even consider. You seem to be totally oblivious to that fact, so maybe you should spend a couple hours on Xbox-live or DotA (or any MOBA ever, for that matter). And again -- you're being insulted for the skin-color of an avatar you play on in a video-game. Even if those people are actually racist, how offensive are you really willing to let them be to you? EDIT -- And like somebody said above, does it really make sense to white-wash the game again at this point, simply to satisfy bigots, given the assumption that that's what they really are? Capitulation, if this is really such a big deal for you, is the same as cowardice, I would think. EDIT #2 -- Do you get angry about all hate-speech? Sexism? Homophobia? Religious bigotry? How do you survive in a world filled with asshats? At some point, most adults learn to just shrug and walk away.
hey! what happen brother!
I shouldn't have to be subject to racist abuse while playing a game...
let's ask you a difficult question here. why not? for what reason should you not be exposed to racism when playing with other people? because it's "wrong"? i hate bigotry and racism, but i also acknowledge that my job in life is to behave how i see fit, not to try and force others to act that way. Most of the dipshits saying these things will barely even understand what they are saying, they just know it's a "bad word". go to youtube and watch gaming videos on trolling racist kids. half of them spew the foulest words with no understanding. the solution in rust is easy and threefold. 1) kill them, over and over. 2) mute them, even if that means playing without chatbox, or with your volume at 0 until some kind of mute function comes into play. 3) don't play with them, either because they are banned by like-minded admins, or because you left the server they are on. let's not be victims here about the shallow racism that is being targeted at our avatars. and for gods sake, don't go back to just white skins to appease them.
I started this game last week and I can already see a difference in teamwork. I have seen people banding together because of skin color. I also was killed for being the only white person out of the 5 black people on the beach. Contrary to what most everyone is saying, I like that people are making a deal out of the race thing. When people survive and live they will naturally cling to others who are like them. It's only natural for a X person to want to cling to the other X person rather than the Y person. If this whole thing was survival of lions and tigers, I playing as a tiger would naturally feel more comfortable teaming up with a fellow tiger than a lion. In everyday life people most commonly live among others of their race. In suburbs, apartments, slums, ghettos, projects, barrios, ect. This patch/update creates natural teams in a way. This is something that is not in the programming that's making these teams and actions it's something that is fault of the players who are playing it and their "instinct"(?). This honestly makes this game more realistic I would guess for a survival game and presents another natural challenge that would be not really mentioned when it comes to survival but is most definitely present...
Er... I don't care that my character is black. I care that I am being called racist slurs because it is black. That shouldn't happen and people should not have to be on the end of racist abuse when they are playing a game.
so what do you suggest be done to prevent players from saying racist shit
Rust has a way of bringing out the worst in people and this game change to include race types is no exception, but it's not the fault of the developer if people are being racist assholes because they're exposed to characters with different races, it just showcases how shitty people are. Report people for abuse, and hopefully there can be tools in the future to mute chat from other players. It's not okay to be racist, but it's also not okay to remove diversity from a game to abide that racism. It's not an okay compromise to make.

They're narrow minded and that's it, saying that the company had a bad idea adding skin color is hilarious though.
ya know its funny i logged in yesterday hoping to be another race besides a pale white guy. did i get another race no still the same guy i have always had.
I've been playing today and been called "nigger" by about six different people. This is ridiculous, is there anything that can be done about this?
Stop being so easily offended, for starters.
The issue is DIFFERENCE and how I understand and accept it. Labels and urban terms are created to describe these differences by the court of public opinion and by regimes in power. Do I struggle with people who embody an aggressive culture, yes. Do I struggle with certain generational behaviors, yes Do I become annoyed with specific game play techniques, yes Many things are different to me for various reasons, and for many reasons I am challenged not to prejudge. The skin colour in Rust is an example that it is senseless to prejudge, in these early days, a player or group of players actions or gameplay, and therefore not subject to labels or defamatory terms. Such is the way in life I suppose.
Stop being so easily offended, for starters.
I dare you to walk up to a couple of black guys and say "hey you niggers" and see how they're react, but you know by saying "stop being so easily offended guys I was just joking lol" they should totally understand what you were doing This post cannot be real, casual racism on any degree is not okay, and it's not okay being called nigger or telling people to suck it up.
Yo american and english people give too much shit about that. Delightfully I wont have that problem, as rest of the world does not have kids learning about harrassing black people in its nations history, and spending childhood with that tension between 2 races. Pro tip: play european/russian/chinese servers. The racists will stay and wont follow, as they dont give a fuck. Be sure to live near google hq so you gat that fancy 1000000000gb/s internet bandwidth. Its really just english-speaking who care.

Can we have gingers in the game? Then we'd all have a common enemy.

This is a good addition to the rust. People will start their own ghettos and form gangs. Now devs just need to make some Mac10 & Tec9 models. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQ5Ce8hYdx4

I am most certainly not oblivious to racism on Xbox Live, I have experienced it. Just because it happens else where, that doesn't make it acceptable. I also find it ironic you say capitulation is the same as cowardice, however in the same breath you state you are happy to 'shrug and walk away' in the face of racism, homophobia, sexism and religious bigotry. All things that need to be removed from society. Do I get angry about it? Yes, actually, because it has no place in civilised society.
so what do you suggest be done to prevent players from saying racist shit
I'm not sure but telling people who object to it to put up and shut up because 'it's the internet', like a lot of people in this thread surely doesn't help matters. People need to be told racism isn't acceptable, not ignored because it doesn't really affect you, as you are not a target.
Yo american and english people give too much shit about that. You know, racism exists. It's not good, the people that are racist are shitty, and the people that are racists online are shitty cowards. However, removing skin tones from the game is like telling women to not wear certain types of clothing because men might rape them, or like telling children to never play outside because someone might kidnap them. By removing different skin tones and races from the game the racists win. If you're offended by someone calling you a racist name in the game now you know how millions of people around the world feel. If you want to counter racism it won't be by removing races. It will be by confronting the people in the game and calling them out for being ignorant assholes. This game only mirrors society. We all bring ourselves to the game, the game isn't forcing us to do anything or be someone we're not. If the game is ugly, we're ugly.
Why not just make skin color/customization a player choice instead of randomized and tied to steamID, so if you don't want to be berated and called a 'nigger' all day, you aren't forced to? Look, I like the steamID skin color thing, I really do; it doesn't bother me in the slightest and I think it bring a lot of uniqueness to people characters, but why not let the player customize their own newman? Would it really change a whole lot aside from appeasing people who don't want to roll with whatever their toon currently looks like? Is this really such an unnecessary dumb and ridiculous suggestion? Sure bigots are gonna be bigots regardless of the medium, but being able to choose whether or not you have a huge fucking target on you regarding it would be somewhat nice, no? I don't see how it's either 'we keep it as is' or 'remove it entirely'. We do have other options here people.
