To tell me to "play better" at that point is just ignoring the elephant in the room. I should be actively playing the game while I am playing the game, not tabbing out to watch youtube while I craft my gunpowder. That's bad game design.
Either there needs to be more components to the charges, with one of those components being relatively hard to find, or the top tier explosive charges shouldn't be craftable, we can only get them in airdrops or in rad towns, and we would have to raid with less effective tools like grenades or some lower tier explosive less effective than c4, but more effective than nades.[/QUOTE]
Every time I come back to my base I queue up a stack of gp while I put stuff away, load my furnaces, etc. The 4-5 other people in our group do the same thing. On occasion I sit on my roof and shoot people running by while I craft larger stacks. I'm fine with the current times.
Just like life the game requires time management. However, to increase playability and to help the solo player some type of expensive gp crafting machine might work. However, I would actually increase the time it takes the machine to do it.

It should be both. C4 explosives should only be found in air drops or rad towns. You shouldn't be able to craft them. C4 also needs to be useless by itself. To actually do anything with it you should need to combine a VARIABLE amount of C4 explosives with a detonator. This way you can make explosive charges of various sizes and with various detonation methods.
The detonator(s) would be craftable but would require difficult to find materials. Combining a real battery (only found via air drops or rad towns) with a timer could give you a timed explosive charge. Combining a makeshift battery with a a sand timer could be a lot cheaper and easier to make but would also be less reliable or cause other problems. The explosion could 'fizzle' and waste the C4 without blowing up, the timer could go off at the wrong time, or it might not go off at all. There could also be completely different types of detonators that you could make, each with various benefits and drawbacks.
This would be WAY better than the system we have now. You couldn't just set up what amounts to an assembly line and crank out as many C4 as possible. You'd have to go out and find it, along with the parts you need to use it. Small chunks could be fairly common without being overpowered because it would be up to the player how much they want to put into their bombs, and the limited quantity and capabilities of the detonators would prevent you from spamming tons of small grenades.
