• Are Turrets a good idea?

An EMP device that stops working after a certain amount of time? Just my $0.02.
You can't really compare TF2 and Rust. I mean, TF2 is pre-fab map, short respawns, no items lost, a straight up FPS. Hell, they make dying fun. ever throw yourself into the bomb pit after winning Payload? The biggest difference, I think, is investment. In TF2, you just hop in a game. Sentry kill ya? well, you can either swap to a demo/soldier/spy, and take it out with bombs and sappers, or, just avoid that path for now, and clear the way for buddies. In Rust, You could blow up a sentry... but you (as a new player) need a blueprint for a weapon. Which are guarded, by the turrets. you need the weapons/resources to get passed the turret, but you need to get passed the turret to get the resources. see the issue ? No game should be GEARED to new players. In the sense of games that are so easy, it entices players to play for a couple hours then goes "welp thats it, you bought it, and played it. no take backs" HOWEVER, you have to give new players a chance to get their footing, else they demand refunds, comment (sometimes intelligently) how awful it is to start this game, and the game as a whole suffers. You can't adopt the "Git Gud, or Go Home" mentality, as people mostly choose the latter. [editline]4th July 2015[/editline] I hope you are right. Sincerely. Still kinda upset they halved door-health.
You have no clue how auto turrets are going to be implemented. You're speaking on behalf of a bunch of theoretical new players who according to you are so sensitive about dying that if they got shot in a SURVIVAL game they would just cry and get a refund. And you're asking for turrets to be scrapped before they're even in the game. We were all new once and we learned just fine, just worry about yourself and if all the noobs feel it's too unfair they'll speak their mind.
I personally think an automatic sentry to be a horrible idea in Rust. You need a lot of advanced tech to make a self-aiming self-shooting turret. Now manually operated mounted turrets would be really cool. Deploying a sandbag+turret during a raid would be awesome.
Manual turrets don't address the issue of offline raiding. Auto turrets need to be implemented to give a base defender some help. Raiders have plenty of higher tech tools to play with, defenders should get some too. Again I feel like I have to point out all this doom saying about turrets is baseless. We don't know how they're going to be implemented. They could be completely useless on the outside of a building, they could short circuit in the rain for all we know. The concept itself is a great one, it's up to FP to implement it properly.

What I want (being selfish in this statement, I realize this) is a properly balanced turret. One that is neither OP nor useless. No idea how they will accomplish this. Also, being shot in a survival game. Yes, it's part of the experience, and adds to the tension that makes it so fun. BUT its no fun in the extreme scenario where new players don't get the chance to survive, because the beaches are blocked in by unrelenting turrets.
Why are there no pit falls in this game, perfect base defense for this games setting

They'd burn their ammo on fresh spawns quickly for no payback, and would just make players a huge target. It would be funny for trolling for a few minutes before ending with the turret clicking or players with firearms sniping the turrets from outside of their range.
I imagine they will slow down the tech path to gun and turret levels eventually.

Im gonna go Ghost build and ECM the shit out of turrets
People sure seem to have strong opinions about something they have no idea how actually works. I mean, what if it's a turret that just constantly goes left to right, firing bullets until empty if a wire is tripped or something like that? People are acting like these are going to be auto lock-on infinite bullet death machines. Maybe we should get any sort of idea how they might work before we jump to conclusions about how OP they are, yeah?

I was thinking a lot about the idea of auto-turrets, and I just don't like the fact, that it's really a complex thing to build, the technology behind it is much more advanced, than the tech behind the codelock, the other hi-tech item in the game. However I'm not completely against it. But why not degrade the lower tier auto-turrets to simple traps made using actual weapons? Could be activated by a tripwire, or a pressure plate (kinda like the shotgun trap in the movie Saw). First you have to aim the gun at somewhere, and when activated it shoots in one direction, until it's dry. In bigger bases you could even hide it behind twig walls. I'm much more of a fan of simple traps, than automated stuff. I think it fits the world better.

People need to stop criticizing Garry's ideas of his game. its his game and dreams, and no matter what you say he is going to implement the turrets
What the developers have to say: “We are in very early development. Some things work, some things don't. We haven't totally decided where the game is headed - so things will change. Things will change a lot. We might even make changes that you think are wrong. But we have a plan. It's in our interest to make the game awesome - so please trust us.”
Criticizing in the sense of "Do it MY way" correct. Sit down, it's not your game. HOWEVER, the game devs put the game in alpha, and allowed forums to get feedback on their product as well as ideas on how to improve it. Discussion on game mechanics by players is extremely helpful to devs.
