• How do you counter base decay?

the only major problem I see at this time, is the fact that twigs decay way to fuckin fast, and everything has to be manually repaired ( making foundations near impossible to repair ) I suggest that if we are going to have this decay-- ( which I actually am very fond of, because it is a maintenance system it COSTS you to Live in a structure, which I love the idea of because I want to charge taxes eventually ) -- then we need to have an easy way to maintain the decay, I really like the idea of opening my toolbox and placing resources inside these resources maintain decay ( are used up ) within the toolbox radius.
we need to have an easy way to maintain the decay, I really like the idea of opening my toolbox and placing resources inside these resources maintain decay ( are used up ) within the toolbox radius.
I don't think that "easy" is really the right word here. Running around and bashing things with a hammer is really easy, but it's time consuming and tedious. We need something that doesn't burn people out and gives them carpal tunnel syndrome even more than the crafting system. I think "practical" is probably a more accurate word. But otherwise, I totally agree with this.
I thought the main point of the decay was to cut down on people building random crap everywhere which bogs down the server, and to remove old abandoned bases no one uses anymore. But there is all this other stuff, gameplay stuff, that was added... like having to manually go around and repair each wall, and even collect more resources just to do it. Having to put resources into the cupboard is still tacking on some new goal or new task, which is not completely related to clutter/refuse removal. You are now actually having to work to keep your house. Like keeping it safe from the bandits wasn't hard enough already (and 100x more fun). As far as just decay for cleaning up servers, having a 24 hour grace period which can be reset by activating doors or things on them was pretty good, but there were some issues with needing to have contiguous foundations. It would be much better if simply being near them or perhaps standing within a cupboard protection zone, could reset the timers. I am assuming the reason it was previously tied to using doors and such is to prevent it from having to make the check all the time, and opening doors is done often enough but not too frequently. Maybe just need some way to just check when someone enters a protection zone, and if they are the owner, reset all the timers within that radius, and then set some 5-10 minute delay before it can check again for that zone or that owner, so it wont keep triggering over and over. Then all you would really have to do as a player is visit your houses. Abandoned buildings will still fall down, garbage collecting. Keeping and maintaining 10+ houses will become a chore, reducing overall structure density. And I won't be limited in my house design to single floor compounds that have all the surfaces exposed ready for repair. Also, why decay from bottom up? instead of top to bottom? Another idea is to reset the grace period on all connected walls/floors/etc when something is repaired. So even though you can't repair the foundation below the stairs, you can at least prevent it from decaying by repairing anything else in your house. Then you would just need to bang on each house with the hammer once per day or something. Still would prefer to have to do nothing... but its some compromise.
I have an idea. What if toolboxes fields prevented decay. Most left over bases I see have a toolbox inside. Maybe let raiders disable the toolboxes through the GUI to let the houses they raid decay. Otherwise have the toolbox auto disable its anti decay field after a set time(a day maybe). This deals with encased tool boxes.
It's never going to get out of Alpha.
hmm then im not alone with this idea...

If the houseowner did place a walled toolcupboard in his house the base will never get into decay. I like the thought of ressources wich you need to place in your tool cabinet.
I thought about a lot of different possibilities to stop decay on used bases while let abandoned bases getting decayed after 2-3 days ... And I too came to the conclusion, that the best option (in my view) is to be able to place ressources in the cupboard to selfrepair the base (only decay dmg)

After maybe 5 days the Maintenance tool in the cupboard breaks and the decay of the house starts. This would prevent also raiders to go for your ressources in your toolcupboards, because they have no interest in the maintenance tool.
Why not just hit the cupboard with the hammer to repair all tiles in the radius. But yeah decay sucks, I think they should switch to in-game decay. As in natural disasters, Godzilla, etc. Like old school sim city with that damn Godzilla would show up or the great fire of 1902!
The problem with the tool cupboard idea is that it's supposed to eventually be removed. Perhaps if they altered it so that the tool cupboard only protected the building it was placed in ( meaning people not authorized can't place things on/in your building) and then you put resources in it. This could potentially solve 2 issues. The magical cupboard zones, and the decay issue.
What did I do to get around it? I built a small base and just used armored foundations lol. Takes a while to chew through 1000 HP
I think the decay is a great thing it hinders people that build single 1x1 cabinets all over the flipping place. If you have a mega base then pay to keep it mega. The decay is minor to say the least my stone floors in my small bases around the map had drop around 20-40 hp in 24 hours so that is minor very minor. The repairs take all of 2 hammer swings and resources so lets see oh 2 min to fix your mega base oh god no :>. The decay also helps ward off the people that have the need to build the great wall of china across the map or wall in spawn points. With the decay back in i was able to break threw one of those walled in spawn points because the decay had taken 2-300 hps of the stone foundation.
