Deicide's on the right track; it's just a matter of nailing down the delay time and decay rate. I get why we moved away from Legacy's "door maintenance", but the insta-decay is pretty rough during the work week.
And even with a modest 2x2, that means every foundation is getting dark and if I pull some overtime at work it means nekkids with stone hatchets can plunder me valuables.

Just for the record, the whole decay mechanic from Legacy was awesome and I'd rather have them bring back the same system than that idea I just proposed. The idea I proposed is just a way that fits well with the way the new Rust works now and that would be easily moddable without adding any hooks or information to existing structures... The guys at Facepunch could implement that in a day or two if they set their mind to it.. Just a function on a timer that toys with existing data structures in a way that's way more logical than the current system. Heck, in real life, the foundations are usually the last thing to go, not the first one... Decay IRL starts from the top down, the roof is by far the least durable element on almost every building, then the floors, then walls, then pillars (or frame, columns, whatever) and last goes the foundations.
Legacy had it right, it felt natural, it wasn't too fast, etc.
I understand that maybe (although I haven't seen any FP statements confirming this) that upkeep is also part of the equation. If so, they could make it that even with a cupboard protecting the place, there is a much smaller amount of decay. This way the damage would be constant, but would be accelerated significantly if the building is left untended.
