@Garry,
After the update i got this error:
Unsupported Encoding: "utf8".
How can we fix this?
app_update 258550 -beta legacy (but this doesn't work yet)
Any word when it will work again?
Any new updated links to guides on how to get the Legacy server files?
This is the experimental dedicated server - I can download the legacy dedicated server ? Why ?
Yeah, do not use server.cfg yet. All you need is to customise your command line.
When it comes to the steamcmd command, we always use app_update 258550 to update.
Just to let you know, it works now.
I just downloaded it.
Only thing is, I dont know how to install Oxide mod since the folders are different and when I asked on the Oxide forums, they said not to do that, but to do just -legacy, no -beta and all that did was download the experimental server files.
But when I told them that, they dont know why because they download the legacy files, so I'm confuzziled.
I tried passing to the app_update function every combination of arguments mentioned here. It never downloaded a Linux build. The closest it came was to dump some garbage files where the build should have been.
I think the Linux build isn't being built/exported properly in their CI server. It very obvious from this forum post that there used to be a real Linux build. I looked around for a CI server to see if I could investigate further. I was even hoping that there would be some old build artifacts laying around waiting to be downloaded. No such luck. The only link I found to a Facepunch Jenkins server didn't resolve. Either it was an old/invalid link or it's IP secured from prying eyes like mine.
I was able to get the windows experimental build running on a win7 machine, but, that's another story and not the point of this post. Rust deserves a Linux server! And I will help out in anyway I can to get there.
The test script I hacked together, along with a full dump of each app_update command ran, and a list of which files were created by each app_install variant is available as a super long gist here: https://gist.github.com/JonathanPorta/302c4616282ab19eafb0
EDIT: I've written a script that tries to install several different server versions and then looks to find the Linux build. It's running in CI on TravisCI. Hopefully this will save you from spending an evening looking for this build when you could be playing Rust. ;)
EDIT 2: There was nothing showing up in the bug tracker when I searched for "linux", so I opened a bug report regarding the missing build. http://support.facepunchstudios.com/feedback/view/2410-linux-server-build-is-no-longer-available-on-steam

Linux binarys are down since some weeks
What kind of specs do i need to run a server for 6-10 players? and can you run it on Windows server?
What kind of specs do i need to run a server for 6-10 players? and can you run it on Windows server?
My server uses 14-23% of my 3 core 3.2gh athlon possessor, and it only uses about 600 MB of my 8 GB and i have had 15~ people on my server without a problem. I also run my game on same pc sometimes without a hitch.
if that's any help to gauge what you might need to run it.

Since some weeks? Last time I was able to download ANYTHING else than the "empty.txt" file was before October. And even when the download worked, the server wouldn't startup correctly, no matter what distro I used, and no matter what configuration went into the server.
Linux hasn't worked for months.
So I started writing a guide here.

would be nice if the page was updated to reflect the new additions
do we have any idea when a build for linux would be available again?
Last year, the server works without problems. In the latest update server no longer run. The server runs under wine on Arch linux.

Has anyone got Rust to run under Wine64 on 14.04 Ubuntu yet? I have yet to get a good build of wine64 after spending all day on it.
Better yet, a simple one line ETA or update of the linux distro for Rust server sure would be big of Facepunch - come on just give an update, explanation, statement, ANYTHING already.... Bueller? Bueller?
Im having errors triying to host on Windows Server 2004 R2 x64, could anyone help mke?
Here's a topic i started with all the details.

No mistakes at all.
The linux dedicated server is no longer built/released.
All we can do is :
* wait for FP to fix it and release it again
or
* use wine to run the windows version. (the shitty solution)

No but any tutorial describing how to install wine64 (64!) on your distribution should be sufficient.
will we get linux files any day? can't get it to work with wine64
I'm stuck at receiving cant play so any help ????
Hello, can someone help me? i'm stuck on "calculating checksum" and after try it a lot of times i notices that in the console say "out of memory exception"what can i do, i got 4gb RAM and a 3.0Ghz CPU
I guess the DS is triggering a memory management problem in the wine version/configuration you are using.
Maybe try to run winecfg to tweak the config (windows version for example) or try a different version of wine.
Welcome to the wonderful world of wine.
I don't want to be rude but it's a good thing you can't make it run :-)
The more people happy with running the DS under wine, the less likely the real linux DS will be fixed soon.
EDIT
Application tried to create a window, but no driver could be loaded.
Make sure that your X server is running and that $DISPLAY is set correctly.
it might just be that the application is trying to use X11 and you either don't have Xorg running or the user under which wine is running don't have the right to use it. Not sure though.
