Hi,
I cannot build anymore close to another foundation, but it was possible before. Is it something introduced in the last patch? This is a big problem as it means you cannot build bases made of multiple pieces anymore. This will make impossible walling off certain areas or terrain. If this is an intended change, I think it's extremely bad for gameplay. If it's a bug, please fix it! I tested it on official and modded servers to be sure the problem was there for real.
Building ID
Building block entities now store a building identifier that’s identical for all building blocks that belong to the same building. This is used to enforce a distance of two world units between building blocks that don’t belong to the same building. We know that this won’t fix wall stacking base designs given that various combinations of triangle foundations can be used to achieve the same thing within a single building, but it’s an important step for future improvements. I wanted to get the baseline done with this wipe in case I decide to continue working on it later this month.
This is probably why.
This is terrible. Means a lot of base designs will not be possible anymore. And linking your cupboards to your base will not be either, and merging your quarry with your base neither. This is a very bad change. Only high walls will do, but high walls are not be usable in many occasions due to space restrictions. Anyone else feels the same?
Ah, yes, the kneejerk "This changed and now it's terrible" response.
The devs basically ignore anyone who says this within 24 hours of a patch, btw, because you have clearly not thought about it long enough.
The game is in alpha. Change is going to be a constant and you'd best adapt rather than drawing a line in the sand and yelling. The building system will likely change again, and will probably accomodate more base designs as it's improved, including ones you claim are impossible right now. The devs are looking for constructive feedback. "This is awful" is not constructive.
You should consider Rust a new game with every patch.
Play it how it is, not how it was.

No one needs your copy paste comments about "its alpha". Thanks. About my feedback, I gave examples of why it is terrible, maybe read the posts before copy pasting.
Still there is a possibility to do so, it's only very resource consuming. If you connect the parts via other foundations it makes it possible to do such a trick as double walls.
Dude you can do it by building a foundation. Then a foundation steps. Then a foundation next to the steps. Then destroy the steps and replace with a foundation. Easy.
It is a pain trying to honeycomb your cave base since the most recent update though : (
