You haven't been reading facepunch much have you. A lot of people on here are pro-feminist.
pfft have you even read a single thread about femen? there's like twenty people at absolute max here who are anything close to the kind of feminist you're thinking of, compared to the thousands of people who are "egalitarian" or appealing to "common sense." a few actual feminists sprout up and now suddenly FP's entirely about political correctness and affirmative action, as if there's no raging, asocial fucktards attempting to justify all the rampant misogyny in games and their culture.
This is going to give gamer girls a bad name.
This is going to give gamer girls a bad name.
Well, at least for those who don't give a flying fuck. Just like femen gives a bad name for actually sensible feminists.
No matter how you put it, but I'm failing to see the actual problem here. Are there actually girls that are somehow traumatized by the fact that the gaming community consists mostly of males and people say mean things also in the virtual environment?
It's hard for them to play a game without being hassled and bothered constantly because of their gender so they have to pretend to be male just in order to play their games without getting constantly bothered by other people. And don't assume that I nor anyone else are saying this happens to absolutely every girl gamer and that every guy gamer does this shit, but it is a problem, it's out there and it stops people from being able to enjoy their games like a normal person. It's also way wider than just how girls are being treated through messages and voice chat, it's a problem with marketing, both in character design, booth ladies at conventions and all that jazz.
There is a difference in being told "go suck a cock, faggot", "you got owned, shitcunt" and "Are you pretty?" "How hot are you?" "ure a slut". The one is just a general insult, the other is treating the person as a sexual object and focusing on gender.
All of them are insults aimed at people's common or glaring weak points. Males don't like being called faggots. Women don't like being called sluts. There's no difference. And anything including stuff like "faggot" isn't a general insult, it's also focusing on sexual orientation. I don't see any ~gaymers~ asking for documentary money on Kickstarter.
She "found out" about sexism in gaming a year ago? I stopped watching the video at that line, if you're going to make a documentary about a sensitive topic like this you should at least experience the problem firsthand.

But as a male you don't get messages asking about how hot you are, how big your dick is and whether you have a lot of sex or not. Messages sent to male through games aren't sexual in nature 99/100 times, in womens cases at least every other message is about sex.
She "found out" about sexism in gaming a year ago? If you're going to make a documentary you go in and make something unbiased looking at both angles of the case and leave the conclusion to the viewer. The problem here is that she's only focusing on the girls side of the story and not the mens side as well.
It's hard for them to play a game without being hassled and bothered constantly because of their gender so they have to pretend to be male just in order to play their games without getting constantly bothered by other people.
Can't say how big margin of gamer girls actually have that problem. Sounds like it's one of the following: 1. They have addressed that they are a girl 2. They have spoken into a microphone 3. Reason xxx If it's number one: Why did she feel necessary to bring about the fact that she was a female? Can't see any reason to smack your gender into the table in a gaming scenario. If it's number two: Somehow people notice if a girl is speaking to a microphone, but I can't see how the "hassling" and "bothering" is any different from, let's say if a male came in a spoke with a very noticeable indian accent. I bet he would be called a terrorist or something like that, just like a girl would be called "lewl, get back to the kitchen lewl". People are dumb, that's nothing new. Especially in a competitive environment people say the harshest things for the dumbest reasons. Good example of this is the guy on FP who makes that very posh british accent and plays black ops. It doesn't matter if you're a girl. Even if you were secretly a turtle, but you had one feature that made you stand out from the "mass", you will be ridiculed for it, were you a turtle or not. Mark my words.

But as a male gamer you get messages on how ugly you are, how small your dick is and how a permavirgin you are.
Being a gamer has nothing to do with the insults. It's just that there are enough desperate and lonely guys playing, so they *will* take a chance to flirt with or insult a girl, especially when being behind relative anonymity. This isn't rocket science.

This isn't rocket science.
My response to this is simple: The difference between flirting and harassment is whether the other part is interested. You wanna flirt, there's sites for that. If someone wants to play, FFS, let them play.
If it's number one: Why did she feel necessary to bring about the fact that she was a female? Can't see any reason to smack your gender into the table in a gaming scenario.
So what? That isn't a reason for being hassled over or being bothered over by is there? Simply stating your gender shouldn't lead to things like that let alone things you say in the next quote
If it's number two: Somehow people notice if a girl is speaking to a microphone, but I can't see how the "hassling" and "bothering" is any different from, let's say if a male came in a spoke with a very noticeable indian accent. All of those comments are wrong and nobody said otherwise.

Why aren't the other groups making a deal out of it and demanding equal treatment even though they way they speak, look, whatever.. is different from the caucasian male majority? That's what I don't understand.

Also the other groups aren't doing anything about it, that's their problem that they won't take action, not the girls problem.
Women count for about 50% of the population. Do I need to say more?
I'd actually like it if you went into more detail.
So what? That isn't a reason for being hassled over or being bothered over by is there? Simply stating your gender shouldn't lead to things like that let alone things you say in the next quote
Well obviously it's because all women who play video games are just attention-seeking whore who couldn't actually be real fans of video games. In all seriousness, female gamers wouldn't have to state their gender if it wasn't for the fact that just about every gamer is assumed to be a man unless (extensively) proven otherwise.
I'm not trying to be rude here. I shouldn't rely on automerge.
Women count for about 50% of the population. Do I need to say more?
Please do, because I can't see how the women in africa and north korea are relevant to this conversation.
I'd actually like it if you went into more detail.
50% of the population are women, as thus, encountering a woman when playing a game should cause the same reaction as when encountering a man.
Please do, because I can't see how the women in africa and north korea are relevant to this conversation.
I don't see what Africa and North Korea has to do with 50% of the population being women. That number is pretty much the same even if you just pick out a single country. I'd love to discuss all of this in more detail, but I need to go to work.

It's like saying in the middle of a game, "btw, I have blue eyes". Informative, but no one really cares.
What I don't understand is that why do they even feel the need to tell people "btw I'm a girl". It's like saying in the middle of a game, "btw, I have blue eyes". I'm presuming you're a man, so you've probably never had this happen to you and thus can't really empathize with this.
What I don't understand is that why do they even feel the need to tell people "btw I'm a girl". It's like saying in the middle of a game, "btw, I have blue eyes". Which some people actually do, but a good handful don't and start harassing the person because she is a girl.

It's like I said before, if a man went into a knitting class where women would be 90% of the entire class. You bet your ass they will be like "the fuck is HE doing here?". Even though 50% of the world population are male. Better start making a equal knitting for men movement.
Except recent statistics have shown that 47% of gamers are women. So um.
Can I see a source? What kinds of games are we talking about here anyways.

But girls don't announce that they are girls when gaming. Gaming has a broad appeal to both demographics, but marketing and women pretending to be men gives a false view on what gender plays games. Thus you get a false perspective on the amount of girls existing making people react at gir- AND HEY WHAT IS THIS?! Isn't this exactly the problem we are discussing? Ok, need to get my ass to work now, cya later.

I think you have some other issues that are not related to the gaming community at all. If you can't see past the fact that yeah, I'm a minority in this virtual world, but I shouldn't be bothered about it too much, then I'm sorry you should get your priorities straight. You're there to play and have fun, no matter what people think your gender is.
