Minimalistic textures could work, but if he hired any competent artists (and he has the money to!!) the game could look good
Everyone complains about notch too much. You guys sound like a bunch of children that are butt hurt for no reason. Let the game get released then decide whether it is good or not before judging the concept and who is creating it.

Please tell me that is a joke...
It's Minecraft styled? Are you fucking kidding me?
IMO he needs to ditch that art style for this game, simply because these 'computers' are just going to turn out to be red-stone re-skinned with some interactive blocks for expressions or something.
Maybe he used the textures as a placeholder, or maybe because these are textures which are handy to use. This might just be a test if texture even works.
Do not jump to any conclusions.
I actually wanted the coloured polygons.
It would be such a cool elite-like.

Is the Notch hate over? Coolio, I am looking forward to this!

Why did he even bother posting screens so early on then?
It honestly looks like he just followed a beginner Java tutorial and got to Step 3.

I appreciate him doing it because we might be able to offer input.

I believe that screenshot is actually from the model editor.
The 0x10c website has what he is working on and what he has done.

What harm does it cause if he's posting early screenshots?

Talk about clueless.

I agree that the screenshots are not very promising but old textures are often used as placeholder or such, in Source I do it all the time. And some screens might not hurt, although it always has a somewhat psychological effect on people. First bad screenshots are pretty good at destroying a reputation or marking a game as bad. The first impressions stays.
Sounds like a cooler and much more complex version of Spacebuild. I love it!
I am a bit confused though, is this an MMO or will it have servers like minecraft?
I really like the idea of creating and sharing programs which control your ship. People are really on the hate-bandwagon about this, complaining that the game looks like shit when it's a prototype; how ignorant of them. I can't wait for what this game becomes and I hope it inspires other game developers to use a similar idea in their game.
People bitching about the monthly fee are bloody idiots.
He's never said how much the monthly fee would be. What if it were something tiny, like 2.50 a month? I think we can all afford that.
Yes and he stated that single-player users would not need to pay any monthly fee.
If you're too fucking cheap to pay a few bucks a month for an online game that requires upkeep by Mojang then you can just play by yourself.

Ehh... I guess I'm cool with this. This game sounds vaguely interesting to me.

Christ. MechWarrior 2 had textures in 1995.

There's a reason why almost every modern game has textures - it gives depth to objects. Ever play YSFlight? The game has flat colors for the ground, and the only way you can tell how far away you are is by the altimeter. It's really annoying.

Kinda meaningless in space when your reference points are going to be torn to shit anyway.
Christ, that no textures thing sounds horrible. I was hoping it would be a good, easier alternative to EVE online.

It depends, it might look cool depending on how nice the lighting will look
Why would you announce that? I really hope that doesn't seem like a selling point to anyone. Now, if he announced that it would only have procedural textures to save space, that would be something. This is just lazy.
Notch is just terrible at marketing and PR anyway, and he should stay well away. Let's list just some of his many mistakes:
1)
(a) Publicly airing dirty laundry about The Yogscast on twitter, which later proved to be wrong. He tarnished the Yogscast's reputation by doing this, offering nothing more than an apology, whilst his reputation was kept sterling thanks to the Notch Defence Force
(b) Stirring up more shit on twitter, yet again, which unsurprisingly turned out to be a misunderstanding, yet again.
2) Charging a ridiculous price for the Android game, on release, the game only came with less than a handful of blocks, inability to join servers over WiFi and lacked survival mode. As of now, survival mode has been added, yet there are still a minimal amount of blocks, and the game just feels like a bad demo. One of many examples of Notch pushing out an unfinished game to make a quick buck (I know, it was developed by another team, but it was still in the control of Notch/Mojang)
3) Calling the game 0x10c. Nobody can get excited about a game called '0x10c', it's hard to remember, it isn't catchy, and it's hard to say in general conversation. Even as a codename, it's still a terrible choice.
4) And finally, the announcement of no textures. Just because he's an 'indie' developer doesn't mean that he should be expected to release sub-par low quality games, releasing a game without textures in 2012 is just ridiculous. He has a whole team behind him now, has made and continues to make millions, through both game sales and merchandise. It just seems that Notch is doing the bare minimum, and is willing to release a bad game to make a quick buck.
So now it's gonna look like Step 2 of the Java Tutorial - before applying textures.

Come on, he posted yesterday that there might be textures anyway. He hasn't "announced" anything about textures, he's just playing with ideas for the game and posting as he does it.

If Notch doesn't want people to judge what he is doing, he shouldn't make it public.
hes doing texture on is live stream right now..

He doesn't do himself any favours by coming out and hyping this so early. If he just shut the fuck up, didn't tell anyone until he could give the game a proper launch when it's actually good, people would find it very difficult to complain. The problem is we've already made up our minds, there is no longer anything special about the game when we can see all the details as they happen. The same thing happened with minecraft whether it's justified or not.

Announce: Make a public and typically formal declaration about a fact or occurrence or intention.
The will implies that it is definite and final, even if it isn't, he should not post something like that unless his aim is to sell as little copies at possible.

This looks pretty awesome
This game has already turned to shit. If you're going to make a space game in the modern age, you should at least make it look realistic.
Is this made in java too?
Is this made in java too?
I'd assume so, unless Notch learned something else on one of his vacations. Java is good for something like this, which doesn't need to be incredibly powerful, but would work best if it runs on any computer.
