I'm just going to sit back and not say anything until either Notch gives up or the game gets released.
By "modern lighting" he probably means per-pixel lighting (rather than per-vertex) which is like a 10-15 years old feature. I'd love to see him try programming something like SSAO or even bump mapping in Java.
I know there's a mod for Minecraft that upgrades the shaders so that it has bumpmaps. It actually can be quite visually impressive with some work put into it.

Bumpmaps in Minecraft? Sounds neat, I have to see it.

There you go. It just shows how much better the game could look.
Some build was leaked apparantly
Of course, we had to try the obvious:

fuck

almost there...
also we had to fix the shader code to actually get it to run on AMD GPU's
A+

aha got it
i really can't comprehend how much of a sperglord you need to be to say "YEAH, THIS LOOKS GOOD" like some people in this topic

"modern lighting" yeah right lol as if notch had a clue how to program any of the decent features of modern lighting systems(can't even do basic lighting well as is evident from his screenshots)
yeah according to the post a few above this one that links to like a ton of shit made for this game already by asm enthusiasts there is a pretty large fanbase of people who like to do awfully boring trash for fun. I'm sure you'll be able to just download whatever they make and play with it(if this game ever comes to frutition). I personally don't like games that feel like a job so I'd definitely be doing that.
notch deserves another vacation for all his diligent work.

glad he's taking one.
We'll all be making jokes now, but I bet someone in his family has just died.
leaked build? :0
leaked build? :0
I'm not sure if it's really kosher to link to it here, but if you search around, it's not hard to find. All that's there is the computer thing, probably because that's the only really complete feature.
EDIT: Actually, it has a full first person thing in a room with randomly floating cubes. No collision detection.
UPDATE: He included files like "keyboard.asm", "macros.asm", etc., that have C-like functions such as println(), setbg(), clear(), etc., which should make programming way easier for everyone.
When I buy an alpha I do. There is a difference from a finished game and an alpha updating especially when notch promises things he will put into the game. People who bought the game bought it because they believed notch was going to put in the things he said he was going to put in. Also how is it a free sample when we paid for it?
What did Notch say he would add to Minecraft and then didn't? I bought the game fairly early on but didn't play it often.
Not sure if i like his ideas for this new game. I like the idea of a Space Exploration game, but paying too play online sounds stupid. I don't like the idea of no textures either.

Yeh, Notch is definitely out of his league.
You guys act like Notch has some kind of obligation to do things your way.
Maybe he enjoys coding in Java, maybe he enjoys just throwing ideas around until they make good. All this boils down to is you getting annoyed by him enjoying himself, and making millions in the process.
You've just got a vendetta against him because he didn't add something you want to Minecraft, because he has enough money that he is able to take frequent breaks, or because he's using java. None of those are legit reasons to bash someone, and everything he does.
"How dare he use something I wouldn't use! He could use my arbitrary tool and do what I want much faster!"
"How dare he have enough money that he doesn't need to work a 9 to 5 job 5 days a week!"
"How dare he not add something which he said might get added to a game which I paid for as it was!"
You're children, I'm not Notch fanboy, but I see no reason to assume everything he does will turn to shite.
In fact, you're worse than children, you're than one guy who finds youtube videos of bands/shows/commentators they don't like, just to leave a comment that says "these guys suck lol".
Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot the "how dare he do something without mastering it first, everyone should know every niche of coding before doing anything"
What did Notch say he would add to Minecraft and then didn't? I bought the game fairly early on but didn't play it often.
Not much, people asked him if he'd add stuff on twitter and he replied "I've thought about it, it might be added eventually". They then interpreted that as a sacred promise that should never be broken.

Looks legit to me.
