but what purpose do the heels have? character design aside, she spent a big chunk of her life being an alien, and before that a soldier (in boots), so where did she find the time and energy learning the ability to fight and run in heels when she's been in recuperation after being an alien? like giving samus heels in metroid other m. like, why? why does she wear heels... inside of power armor boots? there is no purpose to the heels there either. it's poor design. it's wank material. kerrigan's clothing design in the starcraft 2 expansion is kinda shit. but it really isnt anything compared to all of the LoL females which has nothing to do with blizzard so all of the "controversial" questions are misfired and misguided, in my opinion.
I actually think that Metroid: Other M is the single most misogynistic game I've ever seen. [editline]23rd November 2013[/editline] Before Other M and Fusion I always thought of Samus as this silent, stoic, Clint Eastwood "Man With No Name" type character who would drift between planets and save the universe. Now she's just a whiny asshole.
RPS is quickly becoming Kotaku-tier SJW clickbait. What is with all these gaming "journalists" jumping on the whiteknight/Hurt Feelings Police bandwagon lately? I really fail to see how these 'issues' that basically amount to "I am offended by this character design because it makes me feel insecure about my self" have anything to do with things that actually matter, like "does this game play well and is it fun and worth your money?", you know, things these journos are supposed to be writing about in the first place.
a game can be really good gameplay wise but have an awful objectifying artstyle and horribly designed sexist characters, you know. why are game journalists unable to ask these kind of questions? [editline]24th November 2013[/editline]
i like how gender equality and oversexualization of women in games is generally more of an issue than violence in video games having characters run around senselessly killing each other is a-okay but throw on some shitty character designs like skimpy clothing for a character that should be covered from head to toe in armor and you best get your torch and pitchfork ready
if i had a dime for every time i saw this argument, lmfao. they're completely separate. stop dancing around the issue by making something else a scapegoat. if you're playing a game like dota or world of warcraft or something, you're well aware that you're playing as characters that kill others. everybody who plays these games know this. this is explained in the game's story, mechanics, and lore. it's justified. metal bikinis? 20 year old beautiful Caucasian women only? not justified. i like making a variety of characters in RPGs and MMOs, but half of the time i flat out refuse to play as the female characters because of how horrible their designs are. they make me feel really uncomfortable, and they're just flat out creepy. like, what if i want to be a female paladin? lol nope sorry, the thick ass battle armor that i bought is somehow a fucking swimsuit showing off my character's midriff.
i like how gender equality and oversexualization of women in games is generally more of an issue than violence in video games having characters run around senselessly killing each other is a-okay but throw on some shitty character designs like skimpy clothing for a character that should be covered from head to toe in armor and you best get your torch and pitchfork ready
The violence has a place in the game both for gameplay and for narrative. The sexualized female character design's just there to bait horny male teens. Nobody's complaining about the working girls in DXHR having ridiculous skimpy clothing.
and the strength of the message is super greatly exaggerated, by the way - the "patriarchy" and the "sexism" come from dozens of hundreds of years of male dominated culture, not from this newfangled form of media propagating something new - it's about men being dickbags in general
Exactly. So now that we got something new and cool, why put the old stuff back in to keep reinforcing that thinking, let it stay normal?
yeah it's a problem yeah it needs to be fought yeah we'd probably be better off if it were different but it's not something that will change from people yelling about it, it will change from more women joining the industry and more women joining the ranks of core gamers
But you have seen the reaction to women who try to talk about it, right? And it turns people away, making games is hard work, why bother if the environment is so uninviting. Applies to "core-gaming" as well, very uninviting space. That ties right into the message-thing. Current design most of the time sends the message "this is a boys club". And often unintentional, simply because "well, this is the way it has always been done". Which brings us to:
more open minded developers to go out of their way to try harder not to be sexist, but this effect will still be artificial
Not sure what you mean by artificial, they obviously won't change society by themselves, but instead of unintentionally sending an iffy message, why not intentionally send an inviting one? I'm convinced we can fix this, we just need people talking about it instead of fighting.
i like how gender equality and oversexualization of women in games is generally more of an issue than violence in video games
Because society is past violence as the main means of interaction, violence isn't a core issue today. I think what you mean is the thing with nudity vs violence, which isn't the same.
