I thought Halo reach was alright.

I liked Reach. I hated the motion blur crap though.
Reach could have been so much more.
as a send off to the halo as bungie knew it, it was mediocre.
for the singleplayer anyway, the multiplayer was another case of: Same shit, More Polygons.

Halo 3 was the send off. Reach was an introduction to the series by providing everyone with more information as to why the humans ran to the first halo in the first place.

We have books that detail that, and Reach went ahead and made them all non-cannon in one fell swoop to give space for a drop in-drop out mary-sue character for players to control and a squad of no name throw aways to die pointless and in some cases nonsensical deaths.
They fudged it, just to give Microsoft the last halo game the were required to do under contract before fucking off to do...whatever the fuck they're doing with the devil Activsion.
Little effort was made in reach to make it a stand out game in the series.
case in point the space fighter vehicle section they touted so much at E3, it last ten whole minutes and constituted a 1/5th of the level it was on.
Sorry but as an individual who prefers video games over books, I could care less about any comparison between the two. As far as I'm concerned, what happens in the video games is what becomes true, where as novels are a separate form of media. Obviously the two will always clash.

Point is Bungine lazily took an axe to it rather than working around it and crafting something that would jive with events that have already been established and maintain the narrative integrity of the world that was flushed out largely by: The Books.
Hell they don't even keep with the established Spartan III backstory completely.

I'm a bit biased because I absolutely hate the books with a passion and I loved Reach but I still see your point. To me the main thing that is evident in Reach is that Bungie is tired of making Halo and you can tell. They also explain the the whole mix up with the Spartan III's in the book that came with the special and legendary editions.
Halo wars sucked because it was less awesome than it should have been

Goon is an idiot but he has a point, the books are part of cannon. Bungie worked with the writers and officially endorsed them, it is not like Startrek where there is a book universe and a show universe.

Its in Halo CEs instruction manual, there is a whole page on the backstory.

From what I understand, it didn't end up looking like that because it didn't Test well.
Another case of Developers finding the most brain dead people possible to QA Test their game.

Why in hell did they cut so much, the base looked better, the marines acted more human by going prone and crouching, and there were actually people at the base, none of that should have been cut.

Okay, and? If people don't know the story now, they can go on Halopedia and look it up. They can read the books. They can play Reach. They can do any number of things to learn about the game. That aside, this all circles back on Reach being a bad game in your eyes, correct?
You're entitled to that opinion. Personally, I found Reach to be noticeably different from the other Halos, in a variety of ways, even if I enjoyed it. I know the community is divisive on Reach, and I can see why, so I won't argue against your opinion over the game being good or bad. What I will argue is the fact that you seem to think Bungie just reskinned Halo 3, repackaged it and called it a new, final entry in the series. That is an objectively wrong statement.

Sadly, that proof of concept demo never really came to fruition. I liked Halo Wars, but, damn, it could have been so much more. Thank the gods the Halo MMO was killed before it went any further in desecrating the series.

Reach was underwhelming, it was a complete game yes and there was nothing technically or functionally wrong with it.
What makes it a disappointment to me is that's just it, it's everything it needs to be and nothing more, bungie didn't try, they made the game that they HAD to make and nothing else.

The 3 year dev history, brand new engine, rare use of previous assets, awesome audio quality around all aspects of that game, and 800k+ unique people who play it a week disagree with you. They wanted to do something special for Halo fans as their last Halo game, and they did just that. Successfully.

Reach was underwhelming though. Everyone and everything in the Halo universe mentions Reach as being this awesome huge battle that lasted a few weeks but in the game you only see that stuff in the distance and never really participate in anything that has a large scale to it. Your always in the sidelines in Halo: Reach and the only large scale mission I can think of was the saber mission.
The engine wasn't new either it was just a modified Halo 3 engine. I love the game but I can still see the flaws in it.

Oh, I agree that it was underwhelming. As much as I liked it, I felt it lacked a certain scale I always imagined Reach would have. It didn't exactly feel like a desperate, final battle in one of the most vital theaters of war.
And, yes, it was just a modified ODST engine (to my knowledge). It's actually pretty awesome how the Halo engine has aged, seeing what it has become since 2001.
The only thing I didn't like about Halo Wars was that the UNSC had a leg up in multiplayer most of the time. Forge litterally had a Mammoth Tank + 1, Anders has the ability to get gauss hogs and hawks almost the start of the game, Cutter could just spam ODST everywhere when he got to the upgrade.

Halo Reach told the events of Reach we didn't read about, the story of how we found the Halo array to being with, and a team of Spartans that gave their life in hope to defend their home. Technology wise, how would you expect performance to be if we were part of such large scale missions? It's an Xbox, not a high end PC.
Reach has been in development since the completion of Halo 3, in the tradition of a full three year cycle and will use a completely new game engine created specifically for the game.

Derived from a previous Halo engine or not, it's still a new engine that used very little assets from the previous engines.
I liked Halo Wars.
It could've been better but it was fun and cool
hijacking was neato
Didn't they send a cease and desist order to a halo RTS mod the same day they announced Halo Wars.

They did. It was a C&C3 mod, if I'm not mistaken.

I wouldn't know about that. I don't read manuals and to add to that I don't often keep cases. Unless however they are of some importance such as collectors editions.
As far as what is official in the halo universe wouldn't the Halo Anthology book be the correct source of information? It's a large hardcover book with information from the games and the novels bunched into it to serve as a central source of official information. I would take that before I took a manual. Unless of course they both coincide with each other. Which, again I have no idea.
So shamefully, I have no idea what the manual says in regards to what happens before the game. I'm kind of regretting it now though. I should have kept those cases :/

My copy of Halo Wars is in the mail somewhere. Should be here by Wednesday at the latest. I look forward to seeing what all the hub ub is about.

Chief is a Spartan II? How does he always get upgraded armor if he is the last one?
Chief is a Spartan II? How does he always get upgraded armor if he is the last one?
There's a comic were they tested the new Mark VI on a retired spartan before the chief got a hold of it and the Mark IV was in the prototype stage when Halo: Reach happened.

My favourite part about this is how it basically made the books not cannon because Bungie said that if the books and the games were to conflict than the games would override the books.
Chief is a Spartan II? How does he always get upgraded armor if he is the last one?
Hes not, at the time of the Fall of Reach they thought he was the last one, after escaping Halo he finds some of his spartan buddies survived the Fall of Reach then they all head back to earth for beers.
If you didn't know he was a Spartan II what did you think he was then?

But it doesn't contradict anything. The only thing different is the date when the war started which Bungie retconned to 27 years.
