Windows 8 is actually amazing, nobody bought it because their first thought is "wtf this is for phones"
It's sexy if you give it a chance, I'm sad that nobody else thinks so
It's pure horse shit if you don't have a stardard resolution / screen, my 1.8m 7680 x 1440 display, it shows three rows of icons on the start screen, each icon is 6.5cm x 6.5 cm!!!
Are you 60 years old? It takes literally 10 seconds to find it out, especially because it FUCKING TELLS YOU WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO ACCESS THE START MENU
or alternatively, you do what you would likely do anyway, and press the windows key on your comp

It being $40 isn't appealing enough for you?
It won't be $40 for very long...
All these people bitching about Windows 8 have never used it
It's not that bad. The only annoying part is getting the start button back and that takes like 2 seconds
of all the bad things you could list you name the least valid one
Look at your keyboard every once in a while, you can even still click that thing
I'm hoping the next Windows will be great, otherwise I've lost all interest in Microsoft and/or Windows.
Maybe they should take a viagra.

Same path here, it's already begun for me.
I'm only posting from windows because I'm using a family laptop.

If Ballmer is still on board when that happens, prepare for disappointment.
good job BBC you worded your title wrong and now everybody's being an idiot
whats the point of this. of course windows sales are up after they release a new version of the OS. the point is that they threw billions at marketing and saw very little return

Hmmmm.
'Cept I've used it, and I still don't want it.
It offers me nothing. The "legit performance upgrades" will shave off fractions of seconds of operations I am fine with at the moment. Its a fancy UI upgrade, thats it. I REFUSE to PAY for a UI change that I'll change back anyway.
Windows eight fails? STOP THE FUCKING PRESSES
I'm hoping the next Windows will be great, otherwise I've lost all interest in Microsoft and/or Windows.
there'd have to be magically amazing improvements to Wine before I switch. I mean yeah tons of great titles I play are already on Steam for Linux, but there are plenty that won't get a port
People keep complaining about Windows 8 being so naff. I just downloaded a program called Stardock start8, which brings back the old start menu and even boots into the desktop. Now I never even have to look at the new start menu again if I don't want, and I get the benefit of faster boot times, a cleaner & leaner UI, as well a generally faster and nippier OS. Comes with a bunch of configurable options as well, so now you all have no reason to upgrade.

Windows 8 is fine without the program. Allot of OS's are going for fullscreen app drawers these days
And I can finally press win key and not have a game get all laggy or clunkily alt tab
I blame the fact that Microsoft has done a shitty job at marketing the OS. I don't see an ads on TV for it like they did for W7.
"If you download this extra program Windows 8 is fine" =/= "Windows 8 is fine."
Don't get me wrong, Windows 8 IS fine without it and I'm happy to use it with or without start8. I was just acknowledging the people out there saying that there's no reason to upgrade because they don't like the new start menu. This program resolves any issues they might have with it is all. I realise it isn't really ideal to have to download a program to fix issues people might have with the operating system, but it is at least a solution.

they definitely did ads for windows 8, but like most microsoft ads, they were definitive proof that simply throwing money at advertising doesn't make for good ads.

Windows 8 is great in vanilla mode, you get quickly used to the new menu and how to navigate to the control panel and such.
Windows 8 is perfect with Classic Shell.
"If you download this extra program Windows 8 is fine" =/= "Windows 8 is fine."
this reminds me of a ton of arguments in fallout/TES threads
I should also mention that I'm aware that 8 has a lot of general improvements over 7 and as far as the rest of the OS goes I think it's better. The new UI just seems like an arbitrary change unless you use a fair number of the new apps, and it isn't the best for mouse control.
Remember that many, many people who will be using Windows 8 don't know how to/will never seek out manual improvements for the UI and don't poke around with keyboard shortcuts and stuff to adapt.

god there is no new UI just a new start menu, that barely makes a difference

the new start menu is a new ui

They're making a lot of special apps for "the new start menu" are they not? What if you don't use any of them? What's the point of having a whole other screen that doesn't operate like the rest of the OS just to do what the start menu did?

I don't use any of them, but I like the new start menu because it's sleeker

I agree the start menu is sleeker, but it's by no means more practical, especially for a desktop.
For instance, my main concern is this:
Windows <7

Windows 8

It's a pain to browse your installed programs, and you can't collapse the groups, making it very cluttered very fast.

FEED THE HIVEMIND MS!!!

Except the average consumer aren't exposed to or informed about third party programs like this. Maybe it's practical, but Windows 8 in reality is just a non-appealing UI upgrade. Is it practical for the average consumer to go through the trouble of installing a new OS with only one noticeable feature only for them to unofficially rollback through a third party tool?

If you used the start menu search to launch programs before the hotkeys have literally not even changed
before:
windows key -> paint -> enter
now:
windows key -> paint -> enter
:v:

This is another thing I dislike.
"oh you can download a mod to fix it"
No, I shouldn't have to download anything to make a change to the GUI.
A good GUI allows the user to change the majority of the GUI to their exact liking, without the need for third party programs. Microsoft have removed many of the GUI settings and are forcing everyone to use either Metro or the Desktop, but aside from changing colours, it's still extremely limited.
You can also not download a mod and not fix what isn't broken.
I much prefer the start screen in Win8 over the start menu in Win7.
