Wow, what a huge surprise, people don't like windows 7 with a touch interface tacked on.
Windows 8 works for me, but doesn't add enough to justify the huge price tag its going to be at post-January. Also the fact that you can't 'officially' turn Metro off is retarded. I never ended up using it, just booted then clicked the Desktop tile, never to return to Metro.
I bet you have a billion icons on your Desktop for all your programs. Thats actually what Metro tried to prevent people from doing. I guess its not obvious enough for most people what benefits there are, by shifting your application icons to a toggleable second desktop (Metro), that you can search.
Windows 8 is fine. It's really funny to see people bitching about it, because they subscribe to the idea that every other OS from microsoft is a plague or something, but every one knows they'll be hopping on the bandwagon for windows 9, which will certainly keep metro (to go back on this is a massive downgrade once you've learned the new UI).

Its only been this way for 2 decades, you're right its a stupid bandwagon. And to be honest? I'm not shelling out money for 9 either. I don't buy operating systems, and I sure as hell don't buy skins for operating systems, which is what 8 is. Its a $40, soon to be $99+, skin for an already decent operating system.
Moving on, did nobody read that windows 8 is actually increasing their revenue, they're just dropping in profits because of increased spending on research and development? I feel like every time windows 8 is mentioned facepunch's retard squad that only reads thread titles jumps in. The article says their profits increased 3% to quite a few billions of dollars :v:

Wow, what a huge surprise, people don't like windows 7 with a touch interface tacked on.
Guess they don't read the thread either :v:
I agree the start menu is sleeker, but it's by no means more practical, especially for a desktop. For instance, my main concern is this: Windows <7 Windows 8 It's a pain to browse your installed programs, and you can't collapse the groups, making it very cluttered very fast.
wow I remember the many times I actually used that instead of just going into Program Files and looking for it... do people honestly use the old start menu?
no one used the old start menu which is why it was removed everyone winkey+name+enter
no one used the old start menu which is why it was removed everyone winkey+name+enter
I constantly use the start menu with my mouse pointer. It's faster than searching. I only use the search function when I don't have it pinned to the start menu.
no one used the old start menu which is why it was removed everyone winkey+name+enter
If it was possible to be any more wrong about a statement than you were just now they have yet to find an example. Seriously think about how stupid that statement was. millions of people still use Windows XP, which doesn't even have that feature. Why they're still on XP is entirely irrelevant, they're still on it and XP doesn't do that. Still others, like myself, do use it, but only when they cannot easily just click on what they want...and why would I bother typing in "Control Panel" when I can just click the CP button put there? Lastly, for whatever reason, many people lack a working win key. Maybe their keyboard is old, maybe it never had one, maybe the key got ripped off, doesn't matter why. Mine doesn't work because I ripped the annoying bastard off, I got tired of it alt-tabbing games that crash when you alt-tab. So uhh...yeah....you couldn't be more wrong if you tried. Good attempt though.
um microsoft released the data showing that very few windows 7/vista users ever used the start menu other than for searching.
And you honestly believe it to be even remotely true? I have my doubts more than a fifth of the actual userbase enabled the tracking app they use to gather those stats. The sweeping majority of Windows users are people that don't even know the search box is there, and those users don't opt into things like that...and file lawsuits if they're opted in automatically.
you can do the same thing with the new metro menu or taskbar pinned items
And I argued against that when? I'm defending Windows 8. Also, you can but you can't in the same way. It's way more ineffecient for that and takes up your whole screen which annoys the fuck out of me (which is why I went with Classic Shell after all).
there'd have to be magically amazing improvements to Wine before I switch. I mean yeah tons of great titles I play are already on Steam for Linux, but there are plenty that won't get a port
What would be "amazing improvements" to you? Windows 8 doesn't really seem that appealing to me, sure they made it a bit faster but it's still behind even OS X and Linux in terms of performance and multi-tasking. The fact the UI is a bit of an inconsistent clusterfuck just so that they can push their Windows Phone ecosystem onto the desktop is a bit of a turn off as well.

i want windows 8 on a touchscreen laptop
Why aren't all these people upgrading with money they don't have for litterally no reason other than: FEED THE HIVEMIND MS!!!
I never said they should upgrade. It's just not as awful as people make it out to be
"If you download this extra program Windows 8 is fine" =/= "Windows 8 is fine."
and yet some of the first things every person does when they install windows is install new antivirus software, new web browsers, and new media viewers. being able to download a program and change the way use your computer isnt a flaw, it's a strength. some people use ie and are fine with it. some dont and use firefox or chrome. some like the new start menu. some dont like it and they install new start menu customizers.
i really think people should just get over the fact that some people do like Modern UI and some don't
This is another thing I dislike. "oh you can download a mod to fix it" No, I shouldn't have to download anything to make a change to the GUI. A good GUI allows the user to change the majority of the GUI to their exact liking, without the need for third party programs. Microsoft have removed many of the GUI settings and are forcing everyone to use either Metro or the Desktop, but aside from changing colours, it's still extremely limited.
oblivion and vampire the masquerade are broken in that they dont work windows 8 is broken because you personally dont like it despite the fact that its bug free and functions the way it was designed to please understand the difference just because i dont like the homescreen on iphones doesnt mean that iphones are broken

i mean i have no idea if thats actually the case, for all we know it could be like 1% of users if you can prove it then ill concede the point to you
Hmmmm. 'Cept I've used it, and I still don't want it.
Where did I say it was broken?
my apologies, your usage of the word fix made it seem like you thought it was broken
how significant in percentage i want exact figures
Well if I do a quick Google search for Start 8 I can easily find that start8 has ~3 million downloads. There are other programs that do the same feature so let's say 4 million. Another Google search shows that ~60 million copies have been sold, so let's do a quick division! 4 million/60 million * 100 = 6.67% Considering it's only been out for such a small amount of time, that's actually quite a lot of users downloading third party software to get it to their liking.

If anything, it shows that people spouting shit about it being broken are the vocal minority.
now lets not get ahead of ourselves, we have one more test to complete how many people used custom ui mods in 7 vs the population then we can compare the percent difference [editline]25th January 2013[/editline] cause if windows 7 had 6 percent of its users change ui then it wouldn't be that big of a change
Windows 8 has been officially out for 3 months, and over 94% of users don't use programs like Start8. If it was less than 1% I would understand, but it's 6% - that's still a lot of people who actively went and changed the GUI of 8 because they want it how they want it.
also you need to factor in a lot more, the real percentage is probably a lot higher stardock, rainmeter, samurize, displayfusion, fences, etc all are mods for windows that edit the way the ui behaves
