Every Rust player has been permanently assigned a skin and hair colour. Including pube colour
Is there a way to see what your steam ID would generate, even if you don't own rust? I'm curious.
it probably just randomly chooses something, then links it to your id
"Everyone now has a pseudo unique skin tone and face,” wrote Newman. “Just like in real life, you are who you are – you can’t change your skin colour or your face. It’s actually tied to your steamid."
But if they plan on adding new tones, faces & females, so you might change, is this statement really true at all? Maybe they should have added everything in before locking people down.
It is true. YOU can't change it. It doesn't say it's permanently like it is now.
it probably just randomly chooses something, then links it to your id
Rather it uses your steam id as parameters. It isn't random in that sense. If they did what you imply, that means they'd need to transfer that data to all servers and stuff. But instead it just takes your id and spews out the result of how you should look. Kinda like map seeds work except without random generation.

I'm pretty sure in updates there'll be global rerolls and resets. I doubt this is final. However, it's also not something you can change in-game with a slider. Every server you go to on a particular version, you'll have the same skintone.
have to start this up for the first time in over a year just to see what i got
i like the idea of being able to get tattoos and scars as customization, maybe haircuts and dyes could be a thing as well
I imagine at some point there will be options for servers. Some servers you will be able to change your character. Others you will be assigned one. That way people can do what they want.
Looks like in Bruce willis and jeany reeves blue pubed baby
What a great way to cull the filth from the game Garry. Now all you gotta do is add in autoban words that perma the user from the game and I'll consider buying Rust in a few years time once all the dredge has been removed. This is honestly fucking genius.
It's an interesting idea, but I also think it's a bit unfair for the player.
On the other hand, this does affect everyone, so it's not unfair.
Hmm. Curious to see everyone's opinion.
Bullshit, black people are harder to see at night, game imbalanced
Aren't the eyes and teeth selfillum by default? Just like in real life?

I'm not getting how it's unfair to the player? Oh no! A random algorithm decided you get to be the black guy with blonde hair! Whatever will you do!
Oh...just play as them I suppose? Seeing as it has no bearing on your ability to play the game.

[del]There should be a server-side seed that is used with the Steam ID to generate the skin color and such.[/del]

Actually I take that back. I prefer the idea of having people rebuy Rust more.
That's really fucking stupid.

Some people want to be the character they want, not be forced to play as someone they don't when someone else gets to be a character they enjoy.
I have no problem with this, but you have to see where some people are coming from.
At the very least, there could be an option to create your character and then you can never change them.
A lot of people like to play as a character they relate to.
I think it's a neat idea, but I can definitely understand people who hate it.
On one hand, I'm sure in time this will be lauded as a progressive as hell idea
On the other, I'm almost certain garry did this just to hear kids bitch and moan about their character being black :v:
Facepunch founder Garry Newman said it’s “just like in real life, you are who you are – you can’t change your skin colour or your face.”
... but you can though. It's called surgery.
Sure, plastic/reconstructive surgery might be hard to come by in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, but Fallout did it anyway.
Garry's experiments strike again :v:
It's probably just to get Rust attention for $$
If this were implemented by any other developer far more people would be complaining.

I wanted to have blonde hair when I played Max Payne so I quit after 5 minutes.
Great idea.
Also if you can't get over the way your character looks and you really want to change it you should quit videogames because it's literally just a game and doesn't subtract in any shape or form the way the game plays.
And here come the people complaining about their immersion, or their escapism. Two ideals that are completely overrrated anyways. Do you really need to be in your own personalized persona to enjoy whats happening outside of the character?

lol, I'm with you Garry, 100 percent. I just know there is always going to be backlash, especially with a feature like this. I respect your decisions, I just like to see both sides of an argument.
This is just a very different idea for a game of this genre/play style, and some people need some time to get used to the idea.

Fallout already had more than enough preexisting technology, though. Rust has you start practically in the stone age when you start out, and the later tech is still pretty pathetic when compared to Fallout. However, I could see tribal markings and tattoos being a thing. :v: It would be cool if we could draw our own designs instead of selecting from a preset.

I think I speak for all of us non-Rust players when I say I wanna see screenshots of the different combinations of character attribute colors possible. Also black dudes with green pubes on their dongs.
Garry better made the black to white ratio 10 to 1.
Garry better made the black to white ratio 10 to 1.
I've seen far more brown or very brown dudes than I've seen anything close to white or asian.
tbh i think this is a bit dumb
people should be able to roughly choose their skin color and have it randomized from there

It should just be randomized after each death.

tbh It's fine as is. Just needs more variations.

While you have a point
I'm not sure about blue hair and pubes, it looks just a little silly.
