Your glasses must be odd then, even my eye doctor specifically told me how glasses properly made to your prescription will always have better quality than your contacts, because contacts aren't made for the individual and are made in various sizes. I myself have a noticeable (but obviously not terrible) decline in my vision with contacts on versus glasses.
I may be wrong, I just assumed my doctor was correct, especially since it sounds pretty logical. But hey, I'm no expert on the subject.
And I'm used to it myself, exact same story for me. Up to ten minutes at first but now I can usually do it very quickly.
Oh, I don't pretend to completely understand the details of ophthalmology either. What you said is true, the glasses are cut specifically to your prescription.
However, I've always found it way clearer when the lens was directly on my eye, as opposed to ~1 inch away. My prescription is high enough that my lenses have some distortion on them. Enough so that when my glasses don't sit perfectly horizontal on my face, my eyes can no longer focus.

I thought they would use adjustable optics, like a microscope. Not a set of approximately accurate lenses you have to change.
In the official blog post, Oculus mentioned that this was the best short-term solution they could come up with without a major redesign in time for the dev kit launch. The consumer version could very well have a better solution, maybe even adjustable diopters.
