Not having any diversity whatsoever between 4 player character models is too risky due to backlash.
True that.
I identify as a purple furred fox. Why can't I play Assassin's creed as a fox? Plenty of other people identify as foxes. It's not that much of a workload to add a fox assassin. Foxes kill things by out-thinking them, shouldn't it be more fitting for foxes to be added as assassins? Having humans as the protagonists in games is just getting boring, why not animals? It'll add new gameplay and story opportunities. Ubisoft is just being lazy >:((((((((((((((((((((((
What if someone identifies as a trans-raccoon, what then? Are they just going to have to deal with it, or get their representation from Sly Cooper or Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas?
As we've said about 50 times in this thread already: nothing, the thing is people would like different characters for once
d-different characters? You realize liberation had a black female protag and the first one had iranian characters out the ass? The protag in AC3 was black?? I don't even play AC and this is all common knowledge to me? And even outside of AC there's female and black protags all over the fuckin shop, from today and on past generations. I don't know what you want.
What if someone identifies as a trans-raccoon, what then? Are they just going to have to deal with it, or get their representation from Sly Cooper or Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas?
This is why we need a strong modding community
That would actually be a good argument if 50% of the world was purple fox.
How do you know 50% of the world isnt a purple fox trapped in a human body???
What if someone identifies as a trans-raccoon, what then? Are they just going to have to deal with it, or get their representation from Sly Cooper or Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas?
let's not do 'transraccoon' again we know where that train stops
Doesnt matter who says it, its still wrong, creating a worthwhile character thats solid all around is not just a few days of work.
The point is that, for nine studios that employ thousands of people, it's not a relatively big workload.
True that.
Your first post was a reply to me? I'm honoured to be your first.
let's not do 'transraccoon' again we know where that train stops
We'd just be trading one train for another at this point.
Obviously if there was a large amount of purple foxs and trans-racoons then this would be an issue. For now the issue is regarding about 50% of earths population. So if it's a numbers argument - then girls should be included.
That would actually be a good argument if 50% of the world was purple fox.
100% of the human race are skeletons, why arent there more games where I can play as a skeleton living life on the edge and facing hardships? Where are my skeletons? They are always enemies , its fucking bullshit and seriously offensive to me and my skeleton brethren.
And even outside of AC there's female and black protags all over the fuckin shop, from today and on past generations. I don't know what you want.
Give me a list of black female protagonists from games released this year and last year. If they're "all over the fucking shop" it should be easy right?
off the last point, why can't one of the 4 co-op characters be gay too? that's even less work than making a female character.
100% of the human race are skeletons, why arent there more games where I can play as a skeleton living life on the edge and facing hardships? Where are my skeletons? Seriously though you should feel bad for creating such a blatantly stupid argument.
off the last point, why can't one of the 4 co-op characters be gay too? that's even less work than making a female character.
They are gay, they're all French aren't they?
The main problem with development like this is that the demographic who find this to be a "controversy" isn't really outspoken or large enough to really make a threatening impact to them. Yeah a lot of people here are offended or find it really annoying at the least that there's not a female playable character, but the developers know that their target demographic aren't the audience that are offended at it, it's usually heterosexual males in their late teens/early twenties. In fact I honestly doubt the majority of people here who are upset about it were honestly that stoked for it in the first place, AC is kind of going the route of CoD, aka tired and going on too long.
lol fuck off. No one is entitled to put females in their game as much as they aren't entitled to put men in their game. Why is this "debate" even a thing. Also. Its a fucking videogame.
"Why should I care" "-reasons such as having a good story, representation, white guys getting boring because they're in every game, etc-" "it doesn't matter!! let devs do what they want/ it costs more/ (group of people) isnt the target demographic/ (character type in question) wouldnt do that in the real world!" if it doesn't matter and you don't care what race/gender/sexuality a character is, then you shouldn't barge into threads about gender representation in games and blurt how much you don't fucking care, and then throw out excuses as to why we shouldn't change shit. by doing that, you're basically saying that you're alright with the status quo of samey, boring-ass characters, or you are just afraid of the idea of playing as someone new. I mean, we should just replace every single white guy male protagonist with a fat black lady, or a green octopus with a Jamaican accent if it didn't cost any extra for the publisher/developer, because apparently this kind of stuff doesn't matter. It's all about the gameplay, so it shouldn't affect anything important, right??
Seriously though you should feel bad for creating such a blatantly stupid argument
Yeah, that "we're all shkelothons guys" argument was just pedantic to the point of retardation.
The point is that, for nine studios that employ thousands of people, it's not a relatively big workload.
You do realize game devs are on contracts and salarys at a company like that and cant just change on a whim? You also do realize maybe the devs needed for the job live no where near the place they need to be? Maybe they cant just shift focus to some outcry on random blogs and forums, maybe they actually dont have time? Have you ever read about the hell that was the development of Watch_Dogs and AC3? Ubisoft is fucking all over the place, tons of miscommunication, ridiculous time constraints, and no time to do anything. A guy wanted to fix a fucking 90 degree train track in Watch_Dogs, it was like a few spots, really quick and easy to remove, they didnt let him and its still in the game, this was due to ubisoft time constraints. So maybe there are devs that really want that stuff, but they cant, but then these devs get labeled as racist/sexist/etc... and it can apply to pretty much any dev team. There are a lot of reasons on why game companies cant bend to every whim of customers or fans. For me to get a joke it has to be funny
For me to get a joke it has to be funny
Let me stop you from backpedaling, because you really should know that telling everyone that you believed the dude saying he was oppressed because skeletons are not being fairly represented in video games was serious, even for a second, is not the way you wanna go
I honestly would like to see a playable female character for variety's sake and because it's historically accurate. I don't care for the whole "there has to be one female character for the sake of having a female character" because I truly think that's a dumb as fuck reason. As it has been said many times before, a developer is under no obligation to put a playable female character in the game. However, this case is indeed different, because this certain developer gave a bullshit reason and is getting flak for it.
Let me stop you from backpedaling, because you really should know that telling everyone that you believed the dude saying he was oppressed because skeletons are not being fairly represented in video games was serious, even for a second, is not the way you wanna go
He's not backpedaling, he's owning up. That's the opposite of backpedaling.
It's all about the gameplay, so it shouldn't affect anything important, right??
Cho Aniki is probably the best example of this ever
People are actually having a debate about all this ? For fucks sake. Far Cry 3 had a 4-player coop mode, one of the characters is female. Assassin's Creed: Liberation has a female protagonist. Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag doesn't have a female protagonist, but it has James Kidd. There. These are all game by Ubisoft that had female characters, playable or not. Now shut the fuck up about this utter lack of an issue already.
three characters. three characters across 3 sixty dollar AAA games with hundreds of developers working on them. Only ONE of these three characters is an important playable character, and was in the version that didn't sell well because it launched on the Vita, a system that basically nobody owns. Now name every male character from those games. I haven't played all the way through Black Flag and I haven't even touched Liberation yet, so I can't comment on those because I still wanna finish them without spoiling myself, but here's Far Cry 3. Far Cry 3's protagonist and two main antagonists are male. Aside from Liza and Citra, every single one of Jason's mercenary and red-guy enemies (except for animals), rakyat allies (the ones that fight, not random citizens), and major supporting characters like Sam are all male. The only notable female characters were Jason's girlfriend Liza, Citra, Jason's friend Daisy, and Tisha from co-op. Daisy is an incredibly minor character that contributes almost nothing to the story, and Tisha's story is virtually nonexistent because she's a co-op character. And note that this game would have worked out perfectly if Liza was the protag. Why? Because one of the story's main themes is that a rich spoiled teenage brat with zero combat experience is forced to kill to survive after suffering a devastating loss, eventually getting to the point where the line between right and wrong blurs. Liza, along with Jason's other boring friends, is just as incompetent as Brody at the start of the story (aside from the inevitable "player character armor" that jason has, but that's a given), so it would have worked out fine if you could play as any of those kids.
these devs get labeled as racist/sexist/etc...
I would have assumed that the decision makers would get blamed. If people blame individuals who had no choice when it came to what goes in/out then those people are stupid. But most people don't blame the helpless devs - they blame the people who decided what's what.
100% of the human race are skeletons, why arent there more games where I can play as a skeleton living life on the edge and facing hardships? Where are my skeletons? 1Im surprised none of you all are moaning about rust Millions of characters with schlongs
Im surprised none of you all are moaning about rust Millions of characters with schlongs
Probably why Max left, too many dicks, too oppressive.

For starters, you'd walk like an octopus, which is almost an instant win. Second, you're green, and green is awesome. And third, you speak in a jamaican accent. A jamaican accent. Let the awesome sync in for a bit there. But playing as a male/female/white/black/asian/transgender/nongender/whatevererer? Meh. What good does it even serve knowing that I am whichever social tag listed upwards? (or non listed) Do I shoot ink as a gay guy? Do I flee away from tough situations through a very little hole for being a white guy? Do I have a sick jamaican accent as a black female character? No, I do not. Except for the jamaican thing, that can happen. So in short, we need a green octopus that has a jamaican accent.
Im surprised none of you all are moaning about rust Millions of characters with schlongs
how is this even relevant to the discussion
