Yes All Men: Assassin’s Creed Bro-op Controversy Escalates
The first time I heard about all male characters my first thought was, "No female assassin? In France?"
I don't understand how Ubisoft thought they could not include a female character in this setting and then give a shit explanation for it. It's like they asked for this... like they think that... all publicity is good publicity...
I guarantee there will be female assassins in the game, you just wont play as them. Making Ubisoft's comments even more baffling. As I said on the last page the coop characters are probably the main character with different colours.
As I said on the last page the coop characters are probably the main character with different colours.
well yeah, ubisoft is great at reusing assets. i remember how they were using the shitty gun models from rainbow six vegas for years

check yourself fool because those games owned
we always played as the asian girl snowman squad it was great fun
at the end of the day does it really fucking matter?
in the news on facepunch: white guys upset about people wanting something other than white guys as game protagonists for once
rps has become one of the worst sites ever in terms of integrity but i mean come on, female characters in co-op are basically industry standard. look at L4D, far cry 3, the previous assassin's creed coop modes. cutting away all the feminist stuff it just reeks of awful research / marketing to have 4 identical guys in your co-op. i mean at the very least give one of them a fucking beard or a scar or something, at least pretend you aren't re-using assets because you're a bunch of hacks
'nobody should care about representation!!' scream thousands of people who have never experienced not being represented in popular media
I think people need to keep in mind that 'female character' is a very broad term and isn't bound to certain characteristics or physical attributes. Like, if they didn't want to make one with long hair or big breasts, then a woman with short hair and smaller chest would've been pretty neat too!
lol fuck off. No one is entitled to put females in their game as much as they aren't entitled to put men in their game. Why is this "debate" even a thing.
Also.
Its a fucking videogame.
the reason it was made a big issue is people asked why there wasn't a character they thought was teased to be in there early on/because there was one in the past, and they gave a laughably bullshit reason. Their excuse is a ridiculous lie of a joke and that's why people initially got mad, not exclusively because it's suddenly a no-girls club again
This wasn't a zealous SJW bitchfit, but now that it's hitting the limelight everybody with half a cause is jumping at how the problem represents their own issues with the industry. Many issues are pretty genuine but people can suck hard at representing legitimate stances without just coming off as "complaining just to make a problem out of non-issues"
if you can't make female player character animations, just use a really manly woman and say "she represents the strong woman"
just to appease the feminazis
Great job using a word invented by Rush "soft, shitty body" limbaugh.
Lets complain more about SJWS (aka LIBERALS) that want more variety besides the same old straight white dudes over and over.

This kind of thing is the reason why adding any character other than grave-voiced white guy is such an uphill battle. Publishers don't want to deal with the inevitable internet outcry if a female character is or is not added to the game.
CoD: Ghosts added playable female characters and was called misogynist because you could kill them.
Previous Call of Duty titles were called misogynist because there were no playable female characters.
There's no way to win.
But, in terms of numbers, Assassin's Creed Liberation sold very poorly compared to every other AC game (Because Vita / HD Port) , so you can understand Ubi's misguided attempt to avoid another main female character.
First off, when you have 4 male assassins, you could at the very least have one of them be a girl, if not for the sake of representing a big chunk of your audience (Assassin's Creed has a big female fanbase).
Female gamers are not Unity's demographic. The group that historically buys AC games is males from 18-35, even if many female gamers do enjoy the series. (And make up roughly half of all gamers now)

I read a lot of gaming news and have never seen anyone suggest that being able to kill female characters in any games is sexist. And as far as demographics go, very few companies detail the demographics that buy their games the most so it's purely speculation. Women do make up about 50% of gamers so it's not too crazy to assume a few buy AAA games, and many more might if they had a little more representation.
Personally I think games would generally be more interesting if we had a better variety of characters to play as.
I'm sorry, but basing game design for a triple A world class game off of a niche of people who call for equality is an absolutely STUPID idea.
Think about how many people buy AC games, now think about how many of those people fit into the small niche of feminists, or even those calling for equality.
It's a laughable comparison.
With the kind of profit ubisoft makes, i guarantee they don't give a shit about that small niche.
Stop using gaming as a means to push ideals onto people, it's a business created to make money and provide entertainment. And if you can't understand that then you're too sensitive.
an insignificant niche of people
It's hardly an insignificant amount, just not the loudest voice in the crowd most of the time.
edit: thanks automerge

A successful greenlight pitch requires market research to form customer profiles. Every publisher funding a AAA game knows exactly what their demographics are depending on the product.
You don't pony up money to fund a game and say, "Let's market this game to everyone with no clear audience in mind." Of course, you want a wide audience to buy the game, but you plan for an audience.
Focus groups, promotional items, user profile playtests, etc.

Total agreement
I can relate better with males than females.

Maybe insignificant was a poor term to use, but i do think that with the way ubisoft thinks, they do view smaller niches as customers as "isignificant" or acceptable losses in profit.

Every AAA game knows exactly what their demographics are.

Ah sorry, to clarify I mean companies don't usually release information to the public about who has actually purchased their games. So when people say stuff like 'girls don't buy games like *insert game here*' they don't really know that for sure and it's usually a bs argument because they don't want other people having a say about the games they like.

Usually. I look at these numbers for a living.

yes
CoD: Ghosts added playable female characters and was called misogynist because you could kill them.
lol this doesn't actually happen
Holy fuck this type of shit gets funnier and funnier every game.
"Women arent being represented right in this video game that takes place in real life history during a time period where Women almost globally were still thought of lesser, I AM OUTRAGED BY THIS GAME!"
Sorry but women really were not a big part of the French Revolution at all, they were actually looked at as a joke. Sorry but its history and history really doesnt have favors when it comes to people.
There was a March started by Women but only really gained power when EVERYONE joined in, it was not some female strong march.
Funnily there was one famous Female assassin during the Revolution, Charlotte Corday. She killed like 1 guy and was caught and killed, and Ubisoft isnt going to let you play as a real person in history as a MC anyways so it doesnt matter at all.
The worst part is, and the funniest part, its like these fucking people want a women character shoehorned in and pandered to them, but at the same time dont want women to just be shoehorned in. The hypocritical thinking with these fucking people is comedic.
Whether idiots wanna admit it or not, AC games take place in real world history, they actually try and follow them really accurately, sure you turn the Boston tea party into a blood bath in AC3, but the history and events around the tea party were accurate, its Conner that wasnt(cause he isnt real, just like video games)
Also a dressed female in uniform would raise a fuckload of suspicion in a time like the French Revolution.
lol this doesn't actually happen
I think he was referring to this lovely video from IGN.

That video shouldn't have been made, but yeah, it's only one website saying it.

How can you be so naive Max? If AC Unity would have added female assassins people would just say Ubisoft is being sexist!
Why you ask? Well the dialog upon her entry would have to be, "hey look that at that assassin!
Inclusion is just a femanazi trap don't you see?

including a female character => too historically inaccurate
thousands-of-years-old templar/assassasin conspiracy => a-ok!!

Well realistically, this is just speaking towards the co-op aspect of the game. From the looks of things, only Arno is the "real" assassin, with the other 3 players just being faceless nobodies helping you out. No real reason why they couldn't have male and female models for the multiplayer part, especially given the series has had women in multiplayer since Brotherhood. That's the complaint, and it was multiplied tenfold when Ubisoft gave a bullshit excuse.
EDIT: Also, Assassin's Creed Liberation starred an African woman of French heritage, running around in full Assassin's garb (and disguises)...in the American South around the time of the Revolutionary War. And you don't think THAT would have been an odd sight, even in New Orleans?

'the events are real even if the protagonist isn't!'
u do realize that's exactly why they could get away with female protagonists, right??
automerge broken :(

Wow that was a really well put together argument, my view has been totally reversed. I had no idea that women played no part in the French revolution.
The part that really brought tears to my eyes was how you said Ubisoft depicts world history accurately.

That's not a valid point to make, because the "thousands-of-years-old templar/assassasin conspiracy" is pivotal to and basically is the entire plot. Everything else, historically speaking, is more or less kept to true-to-life. If it was Historical Battle Simulator 2014 then you can make this point.
