What game would you recommend to a complete non-gamer?

What I observe a lot is that older people seem to be drawn towards things that play out like or resemble board games from their childhood, I don't know about younger people that don't play video games, but I remember trying to get my ex into grand strategy because she seemed to be into things she had total control over, however she was too busy.
I have yet to get a non-"gamer" to bite on to gaming as a hobby, however I always seem to manage to get people to grab the joystick or a portion of the keyboard if it is a cooperative platformer like Little Big Planet or Battleblock Theater
My sister, who is an absolute spastic at skill based games love Catacomb kids though, especially when she can find a colourful girl character that doesn't have too many bad traits.
Maybe Half-Life.
I'm thinking it should be simple enough that a non-gamer can grasp it, while still being engaging enough that it doesn't give them a weird impression.
Monster quest
Start them off with the retro classics; Tetris, Super Mario, Legend Of Zelda etc.
The Spyro trilogy for the PS1. It's just so pretty and tight-controlling and has tasks for people of all skill levels.
Terraria
When my sister wanted to try some games I let her play Half-Life 2 on my computer and installed Sims 1 for her. Now she has finished the first three Mass Effect games multiple times and last I saw she was playing Civ V and L4D2.
I also once ruined a life by showing a non-gamer roommate of mine WoW back in 2008. It was like giving hard drugs to someone who has never done any. He used to play sports and go outside, now I'm pretty sure he has spent the last almost ten years playing WoW. He was still online every damn day last time I checked.
Tetris, seeing as even my mom who heavily disliked video games was in to Tetris. Naturally one of the older incarnations as opposed to Ubisoft's "so complex nothing can run it" version.
Ragnarok Online, more so as an introduction to MMORPGs due to how simplistic it is.
Hitman: Blood Money as a means to showcase multiple solutions to a level.
Slime Rancher, due reasons mentioned as well as Tabby-Anything hybrids.
Goat Simulator, to show that not all games have to be serious and that sometimes dumb ideas can be fun for a while.
Dwarf fortress - Easy mechanics, simplistic UI, photo-realistic graphics, amazing controls, whats not to love?
Katawa Shoujo
I'd say Journey if I had to pick just one.

Is it time for the thread's annual bump now?

Yes
Mario Kart for sure. Proof being in the fact that pretty much everybody, gamer or not, has played it at some point.

As someone born during the transition from MMOs like Ragnarok to the modern era MMOs like WoW, I don't think I'd pick Ragnarok at all for an introduction.
Not to say it's complicated, but the fact that it's too open-ended would leave way too many people (including myself) clueless on how or what to do to progress. Not to mention how absolutely grindy it is.
For a first MMO I'd recommend FFXIV. Maaaybe WoW though I don't know much about it in its current state, but I know a lot of non-MMORPG players who have particularly enjoyed FFXIV for its singleplayer components.
Almost every non-gamer I know of has problems with hand-eye coordination and managing their view in FPS games which is why I'd be hesitant to recommend Portal. I've lost count of how many times I've watched people take control of an FPS game and immediately look 90 degrees up or down and begin rotating in circles. I'd almost definitely recommend the Sims though. Practically everyone I know at some point or another has played a Sims game. I have an old friend who actually only plays mobile games except for the one PC game they do play which is the Sims funnily enough.
No mention of Rollercoaster Tycoon yet? Come on, guys.
undertale.
