The original version is gone. The GOTY edition is the only version now. Pricing the GOTY edition at $19.99 is pretty generous considering how the GOTY edition is a new release.
Reminds me how Borderlands got it's 'GOTY' update, just adding a new copy of the game to the store at the same price (Both vanilla and GOTY are $15) with all the DLCs. Problem was, people who owned Borderlands (even preordered) can not buy the GOTY version, thus must buy the 'Borderlands DLC Pack' which is double the price of the fully packed GOTY version. Pretty much paying 30 dollars for DLCs people get free with the game if they don't own the game and bought the GOTY version.
At least it's better than buying all the DLCs separate, it's 50 bucks that way.
After playing though Dead Island (without any dlc), I call this a mediocre game because I've run into a couple of bugs, glitches, and other short of problems with this game. The gameplay is sadly not that much fun cause the quests are mostly go over here, kill x of y, obtain x, and bring it back to y. The game is great for a zombie killing action with a bit of challenge similar to Left 4 Dead with a bit of Borderlands however it does not appeal to me much. The storyline is nice but i wish the gameplay and questing is a bit better, along with the ability to make mods to improve this game.

Doesn't really say much considering Revelations 2012 is also fun with friends.
worst game of the year
except it was released in 2011
When I got this game as a gift, and got my first firearm in the game, which was a one-shot rifle.
It looked like I was shooting with a tube IMHO.
It's fun to play with friend or two, melee weapons are really well made (in textures and models, too), but the firearms look like they are made of plastic, and are modeled poorly. Altough when I passed that moment, I didn't really notice this visual problem afterwards.
And I got to agree with darkedone02, it was buggy and glitchy at some points, and the gameplay was linear (go to a, kill b, take c, go back a).
Since when can developers just slap on a GOTY mark without it actually being GOTY?
It just ruins the whole purpose of "Game of the year".

I liked how Obsidian released a "Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition", instead of a "GOTY edition". "Ultimate" sounds better.

I said that for another game and built myself a battleship with all my boxes because apparently any game is fun with friends.
This is not goty, I don't even know which year they are referencing this was goty of
I thought the combat was great, all the weapons, especially blunt, had so much force behind them.
It felt sick just smashing zombies with a sludge hammer.
I still hate this game given all the problems I was given when I bought and traded dead island keys that apparently were the stolen keys. I had to refund like 40 people. As for playing the game, it was confusing having people at different parts of the story in the same game, I'd play for a long time completing missions and then I'd learn "it wasn't on my game." Some of the missions were really corny like the finding the jewerly one in the beginning.

GOTY doesn't mean anything. If some random blogger with 0 readers decides the game is his GOTY then the title is technically justified.
I've started playing this again and I actually like it better alone
It has a lot of interesting environments for exploring and the challenging melee combat is more intense when you're alone
bad dlc to go with a bad game
gg
It's not a bad game. It's not great. But you definitely need the right mindset when you play it, because honestly it's pretty fucking hilarious punching a zombie, sending it cartwheeling through the air as its legs go flying off in opposite directions.
This makes less sense than game of the year Red Orchestra 2.
Except RO2 actually won a GOTY award from PC gamer, as far as I know DI didn't win a single one from a reputable source.
This was unnecessary
i give it a meh out of ok
From time to time I still listen to the music from the trailer with the kid falling out of the window.
This was unnecessary
I'd rather buy the game + all DLC together for one reasonable price rather than separately, so I wouldn't call it unnecessary

Zombies time travel now. Oh god, I just gave some execs a bad idea
The game is great gameplay wise, it's open and fun to burn 4 hours. The customization with melee is pretty specular haven't really seen it executed that well like dead island has.
The voice acting and story line is choppy and horrible, but honestly the gameplay makes up for it.
Playing with friends makes the experience enjoyable but I finished the whole thing on single player.
say what you want about the game but the combat feelt awesome for me
So uh... would anyone recommend this to a first-timer?

Yeah, the price is really reasonable now and the launch kinks have been ironed out for the most part.
Just don't make others' mistake of expecting an emotional survival game when it's really just a brutal action rpg.

Buy it, find some friends to play it with you can/want to, the game can be completed on single player but it may be more fun with co-op.
Just a tip, never walk without thinking you'll get hit by a zombie, they may appear dead but they'll jump up and scare you leaving you with fast time reactions or else you'll lose health.
aka SMASH THE FUCK OUT OF EVERYTHING THAT YOU DIDN'T SMASH THE FUCK OUT OF
for your health
if it moves, kill it
if it doesn't, kill it
I beaten this game 4 times.
By myself.
It was fun.
Crazy enough, The game is probably better with a gamepad since it allows for analog combat where you hold down the trigger and move the analog stick to swing, It's pretty neat. Weird that they don't allow it with the mouse & keyboard though.
