you don't have to really, most of the stuff will be explained in halo 4 and in the games it's usually been explained fairly decently
I'm fine with using books to create an expanded universe where the games don't show, but there shouldn't be required reading just to get what's going on in a game plotwise, just to understand the deeper aspects of the lore.
You don't need to read the books to have an understanding of the lore, or anything plot related.
Still waiting for Halo 3 and whatever else to come to PC. Come on Microsoft, you can do it! As much shit as this series gets I DO want to play it all... Just not on a console.
i really want to know what the covinent are doing!, its been bugging me since the trailer went out like months ago, are these guys out of the loop and trapped in the dyson sphere, or are they like the heritics from halo 2 where they broke off of the covinent, also how armed are the colonists on the human ship, i mean the pillar was carrying a full compliment of doom because of the nature of its mission, which really helped on halo but the ship they came in was made for peace and exploration, not war, this game is going to be epic, too bad i probably wont get around to playing it till x-mas at the earliest and summer by the latest
also halo 3 is never comming to PC, Halo 2 was epic on the PC because you could seriously improve on the xbox's standard grafix, but microsoft announced some long time ago that they had scrapped all plans on porting h3 or future games to the pc, i think it was also a bungie/microsoft problem not really a performance issue

Read the books that take place after Halo 3, they answer all of your questions. The Covenenat forces you encounter in Halo 4 as called the "Storm" faction. They still go by the old ways.

You don't need to. You can play the games and understand the plot just fine, you just won't understand a few of the dialogue references. IE:, spartan III's, Cole Protocol, Harvest, and how Sgt. Johnson survived. It helps to know that but you won't be in the dark for main plot elements.
While the Halo series is cool, and I still have Halo and Halo 2 installed, I just can't bring myself to give a shit about this game. Probably because no other Halo games besides the first two were released on PC. And the second was a disaster. And they blamed their mistakes on the community. And won't bring anymore to PC.
No PC, no care.

As for as I know, there were no covenant in Ambrose's sphere, it was just a few engineers, the spartans, Mendez, and Halsey. The covenant are most certainly just a militia group that refuses to make peace with humanity. As far as the prometheus being armed, even if it is a peaceful ship, it will still have marines onboard.

Halo series is damned if they do, damned if they don't. If it's ported to PC, the community will complain about it being a shitty port. If they don't, the community will complain about it not being ported.

What a pageking.

Okay, well...
These are not normal Covenant. They're total separatists, a member of a faction called "Storm". They are not Covenant, just races of the former Covenant that are still working together. Their exact motivations are still unknown, to my knowledge. It is assumed they still hold to the beliefs of the now collapsed Covenant and, for that reason, are seeking out Forerunner artifacts that can send them on the Great Journey (considering we've found most of the Halos and taken out at least two of them).
There are no colonists on the Infinity. It's humanity's dreadnought, made to explore and chart the galaxy, but part of its goals are to detect potential threats to humanity, and find as of yet undiscovered Forerunner tech.
It really bugs me how many people refuse to give a shit about a game that to be fully honest with you is one of those games that I think should be a console(within that, a 360) game only, because it isn't being ported to PC. I enjoyed the Halo 1 port to PC and I tolerated the Halo 2 port but personally the game feels right with a controller. I understand that you want a PC port but at least give the 360 game a try because as it stands you are missing out on a great game that isn;t coming to PC in the near future, so it's console or nothing.
I own both Halo's for the PC, and as much as I LOVE shooters with a M+KB, Halo for the PC always felt better with a 360 Pad.
I found Halo 2 played better with a controller, but Halo 1 is fine with KB+M

Looks like a hologram to me. Just very more so detailed.
Very detailed but I think the problem is that she doesn't appear to be transparent anymore, which lent itself heavily to that 'traditional' hologram appearance.
I like Cortana's new design.

She's still somewhat transparent.
