1.8? Pre-release? I'm getting awful flashbacks...
How could you have furnaces crash the game like that?
ModdingAPI when?

They're currently rewriting the code of the entire game which is building up to the ModdingAPI

Haven't they been doing that for years?
The world generation sounds like it might be interesting again, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.
Minecraft’s 1.8 update constitutes the most significant injection of new surprises into Survival mode in years. Expect Endermites, Guardians and rabbits. And expect it all within the week
It's kinda depressing that this is legitimately all they have done over the past year.

Not really. Rendering code has been basically entirely reworked and way more efficient. You can get like double the view distance now for similar framerate. They also added in dozens of cool commands for map makers for use with automation. They also added in a completely customizable overworld feature with four pages of sliders. This is actually probably one of the biggest updates in Minecraft history, and I'm just scratching the surface.

Oh, I was just thinking about getting back into minecraft. I guess if 1.8 comes around I'm game.

Lots of bad code and I'm assuming a lot of it is also rebuilding the base to help with future updating. Minecraft was a patchjob for a long time since Notch had been doing it as hobby. I imagine it just takes a fuckton of work to redo it. MogMiner just posted today about something: https://twitter.com/TheMogMiner/status/501659041337446400

I was hugely optimistic for a long time and then became cynical like most people, but I'm now to cautiously optimistic.
Aren't the snapshots all technically "pre-releases" in their own ways? What makes this one so noteworthy? Honestly, if Mojang spent less time working on snapshots and pre-releases, 1.8 would've been out months ago.
Looks like I'm spending tonight playing Minecraft for hours on end. It'll be interesting to see what changes have been made.

Snapshots are in-progress bugs and updates so that the main releases which are pushed are more stable and took feedback into consideration.
The 1.8 Prerelease is 1.8, but done through the snapshot channel for people to test before the general public has it pushed to them.
I really wish they took the time to fix the minecarts. They were on the track with 14w11a when they fixed up the physics and buffed the Powered Minecart, but then backtracked because "the physics didn't play nice with the engine". Unfortunately they fucked up the rollback, so carts are a little more unstable than before and completely broke the PMC (just when it finally got the ability to pull carts like an actual train too). Who knows how long it will take Mojang to fix them up again.
I wish Mojang went full Gabe Newell and slept in their office working 17 hours a day.
They could totally just release a sequel* and make another trillion dollars.
*large update

making an api isn't as easy as writing ">make minecraft easier to mod" in a command line. shit like this takes time, especially when it's running off of terrible code with barely any comments to even guide you through what the fuck notch was thinking when he made it. every release makes the game more modular.
also people are assuming the API will be like an SDK program like hammer, no it's not going to be like that at all. the closest you're going to get is a scripthook injection. MTA:SA and GTA IV scripthook come to mind.
What sucks is that, the modding scene is just now getting to 1.7.1, most haven't even completely updated and are still on 1.6.4. Now 1.8 is on the horizon with a lot of awesome improvements and mods wont be updated to 1.8 for a long time.
