• If Linux is the future then the future is awful or How To Install Linux Alongside Windows

Here's hoping Ubuntu 13.04 will actually be more polished than 12.10 (the daily images actually boot on my laptop, so that's a thing - though nouveau flips its SHIT when I open the Unity dash)
linux is pretty shitty as a desktop os compared to windows (mainly because of stuff like X servers and ALSA) but I don't know how this dude managed to fuck up ubuntu so bad. last time I installed it, I had none of the issues he was describing, at all. no computer I've had has done that.
Because the average Joe Schmoe is gonna devote his time to learning the intricacies of Linux when he could just use windows or osx.
They still have to learn the "intricacies" of Windows and OS X too, it's not like they were born with the knowledge of how to use a computer. I once had Linux running on my system for 2 weeks before my parents even noticed it wasn't Windows, they just thought I pinned the task bar to the top of the screen.
Or you could stick to Windows, get out of your anti-capitalism edgy phase, and enjoy something that just fucking works.
what's with people and thinking the only benefit to Linux is not paying for it? Even leaked internal Microsoft memos admitted that Linux is more stable than Windows, and the Linux kernel is much more efficient that Windows NT.
Or you could stick to Windows, get out of your anti-capitalism edgy phase, and enjoy something that just fucking works.
Linux is free, opensource and secure. In my opinion you get less bang for more money when it comes to Windows. Any capitalist would say Linux is the better take.
Or you could stick to Windows, get out of your anti-capitalism edgy phase, and enjoy something that just fucking works.
Windows eight. [editline]19th February 2013[/editline] Enough said.
Windows eight. [editline]19th February 2013[/editline] Enough said.
Don't start this.
He should have installed Fedora.
We are basically forced to run a virtual box running ubuntu for our Computer Engineering course and while running a virtual box isn't the same. Linux still pisses me off to no end at times. Having to write a bunch of commands just to be able to increase the resolution past 800x600 is just ridiculous. [editline]19th February 2013[/editline] Our Uni has plenty of Red Hat computers that we use for Computer Engineering. Pisses me off a bit less but still enough.
to hear an ECE student complaining about using Linux is like hearing a vetinary student complain about animals.
Don't throw 'bloat' around like some kind of buzzword That implies that most of the software packaged with Ubuntu is useless. Unity can be quite slow, but that doesn't mean it's bloated.
Most of it is though
I think the next big distro will be elementaryOS, currently in Beta http://www.techdrivein.com/2012/12/elementary-os-luna-review-full.html just look their site holy shit they got it together
Am I the only one who managed to install Ubuntu with basically no problems? I put it on an Asus netbook that has absolutely no support for linux in terms of drivers and software and it all worked fine. Even with Unity it's a bit snappier than Windows 7 as well.
This. I installed Linux Mint on my old Asus A7TC laptop and everything worked out of the box even the Fn buttons for volume/brightness etc. that needed additional software from Asus on Windows and it runs some older Windows games like GTA3 better than Vista it came preinstalled with.
I gave up using Ubuntu when it refused to connect to my wireless :(
I had the same problem, then I went and installed Mint and my wireless worked Fuck Ubuntu
Have you tried just using the resolution panel in the preferences?
Don't you think we tried that? :v: [editline]19th February 2013[/editline]
to hear an ECE student complaining about using Linux is like hearing a vetinary student complain about animals.
Well it is far from intuitive and most of the time we have to spend our time battling the random shit that Ubuntu annoys us with. It is supposed to be the best thing for people who study engineering and whatnot but so far I'm not really seeing it. But then again, opinions.
We seriously don't need this newsbot.
MUCH better than shitty shack news feed imo.

Had it for quite some time, and used it on my MATE desktop for a little while too. It works and it's not a bloated piece of shit, so I was pretty happy with it.
Linux is all fun & giggles until something breaks. Then you can start fixing it yourself and spend countless hours mashing shit into the terminal. Sure, they say Linux is for people who enjoy fixing stuff like this, but sometimes things have to go fast and you want to get on with your work.

I've never had the system fuck anything up on any of the distributions I've used. It's ALWAYS been my own fault in one way or another. And I've always fixed it too. If you break something, don't blame the system.
Yay. I boot back into Windows after having a couple of days on Linux and the first thing I see is `This copy of Windows is not genuine`. I wounder what I have done to upset Windows this time.
If things have to go fast and you just need to get your work done, you shouldn't be messing with the system. You simply cannot expect a OS to be resistant to human error; the human will always fuck something up and so its upto the human to fix their mistake.
The calculator is only as good as the one who is using it.
Or in this case Linux is only as good as its user.

Thats why I update it to its most current version, and disable all updates. Specially kernel updates, those break shit all the time.
It shouldn't be that I don't use this system for 6 months and it just stops booting. That's not the definition of a good system.
That's really odd too. How the would something like this even happen?
That's really odd too. How the would something like this even happen?
If the system worked when it shut down, wasn't used for 6 months, and then was borked on first boot, then I'd say hardware issue. Software doesn't just change on an inactive drive.
It shouldn't be that I don't use this system for 6 months and it just stops booting. That's not the definition of a good system.
That would depend on what you mean by 'stops booting'. Most likely you did something in Windows and it's played silly buggers with your bootloader. The Super GRUB Disc would probably sort you out.
Jesus, they're even more OSX posers than Xubuntu.
you can bash it all you want but OSX is far more desired among consumers than any other OS. It has a dock, and uses silver in it's aesthetics. Wow.
