I'm actually sad by the news. I was hoping every souls game would be a fresh start, new lore and new everything. Seeing that this is going to just be a prequel to Dark Souls... I mean I'm sure there will be lots of new stuff but I don't look forward to revisiting anywhere in this game.
EDIT, so I completely forgive them on the namefront of this. Apparently they originally wanted Demon's Souls to be the series, and Dark Souls was going to be Demon's Souls 2. Sony refused to let go of rights though, so the name doesn't really imply anything about the worlds, it's just what they wanted to do in the first place.
today is a good day, so I ask you facepunch.
are you ready to die?

Hopelessness, Despair, and Impending Doom Arrives With Dark Souls II
SAN JOSE, Calif. – December 7, 2012 – Leading video game publisher and developer NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc. today proudly announces that the critically acclaimed Dark Souls™ saga marches forward with Dark Souls™ II, currently in development at FromSoftware in Tokyo, Japan. Dark Souls II will continue a legacy of goading its passionate fan base with unrelenting challenge and suffering that are considered a hallmark of the series; while presenting new devilishly devised obstacles for players to overcome. Dark Souls II will be available for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and PCs.
Built upon the foundation established by Souls series creator and Dark Souls II Supervisor, Hidetaka Miyazaki with development helmed by FromSoftware Director Tomohiro Shibuya, Dark Souls II will feature a new hero, a new storyline, and an unfamiliar world for players to survive in while delivering its signature brand of unrelenting punishment that players hunger for. Epic battles with gruesome enemies and blood-thirsty bosses await adventurers as they traverse through a devastated world filled with death and despair; only those who are strong willed or cunning can survive this journey to achieve great glory. Players seeking to share their experience will discover a revamped server-based multiplayer mode that will put a distinct Dark Souls II twist on the concept of playing with others.
“Dark Souls II retains the core essence of Dark Souls while evolving to present new twists and challenges that are sure to please longtime fans and attract new comers to the series,” says Carlson Choi, Vice President of Marketing at NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc. “FromSoftware is going to take a very dark path with Dark Souls II; players will need to look deep within themselves to see if they have the intestinal fortitude to embark on this journey.”
“This new chapter in the Dark Souls saga presents opportunities for us to drive innovation in gameplay design, develop an entirely new story, and expand the scope of the world in which the player interacts with the game. We have taken these necessary steps with Dark Souls II in order to evolve the overall experience of the Dark Souls series,” says Tomohiro Shibuya, FromSoftware Director on Dark Souls II. “The entire development team is striving to make Dark Souls II an experience that is fresh while not forsaking its roots in presenting players with challenging gameplay. Our goal is to surprise and delight our fans with new experiences and plot twists while enticing new players to join our dark journey.”

its not a prequel theyll just have nods to older games here and there prob
its not a prequel theyll just have nods to older games here and there prob
Then why "Dark Souls 2"? Why the continuation of the undead curse? We're going to get more than a Patches style nod most likely, given all the untouched lore. I just hope this doesn't hinder them from creating a lot of new lore.
Another thing I'm very weary about:
“[Dark Souls II] will be more straightforward and more understandable.” We sympathise if that sort of statement concerns you, but at the same time, we can surely agree that we would all like to see Dark Souls attain as great a presence as The Elder Scrolls.
NO. God, I picked up and started loving Dark Souls when Skyrim left me horribly disappointed. The level design in Dark Souls is brilliant and something you don't see these days. This is going down the road of "We want Call of Duty's audience"... I don't want Skyrim, I want a Souls game.
I've got a feeling that this game'll carry on from the "Dark Ending" of the original. Also, I personally thought that the game would be named something else with the Souls word, like Dead Souls or Dragon Souls or Doomed Souls.
I hope they actually use Steamworks this time around, with a decent PC port...
Man I need to finish Dark Souls at some point.
Man I need to finish Dark Souls at some point.
Everytime I get about 3/4 of the way through it, I end up re rolling a new character and playing through again. I have about 6 un finished characters at the tomb of giants.
I just hope they don't "streamline" it too much.
I wouldn't call myself a Souls veteran or anything, but the unforgiving difficulty is what made it so damn fun. I hope they are just making everything more understandable in regard to stats and whatnot.
I definitely agree. Especially with a new game director (?) on board and with talks of making it appeal to everyone. Still, I hope FromSoftware gets the sales they deserve.

I agree, they should add a bit more transparency and structure behind the statsystem, especially on the weapons.
Well let's hope the controls won't be completely broken this time for a change.

Sorry I did not get that part.
I don't think I have the money to throw more controllers into walls
Man I need to finish Dark Souls at some point.
I have only gotten to the part where you drop the ladder to the second fireplace. I have had the game for more than a year.

I should probably get it on the pc.

I think he might be referring to the default mouse and keyboard controls. Without that available 'mouse fix' mod, they're beyond atrocious. But that's just my guess, otherwise I have absolutely no idea. While I prefer using a controller for this game, it would be nice to have properly implemented mouse and keyboard controls for the next title.

Yes, yes you do.

Well, I am a console peasant. The controls worked absolutely fine for me.
Sorry I did not get that part.
I expected the game to be more like mount and blade with mythology and dodging. Not what I got.
It felt incredibly ponderous to me. Essentially a badly designed arcade fighter in full 3d from my point of view. And the fact you couldn't essentially fight anything without target locking.
I know a lot of people adored that part though.
Also does anybody have the song in the trailer. I am a sucker for those sort of things.
If you expected something like M&B then it's your fault. You should have informed yourself beforehand. Also that does not make the controls bad, they work fine and are very responsive.

I actually kind of liked that about the combat.

I'm pretty sure it was made specifically for the trailer so no one knows. I'd love it too :(

I'm not knocking the controls when a gamepad is being used. They mesh perfectly with the combat system, which is one of the best I've seen in a long time.

You got the wrong game then. Slow(ish) strategic combat is the whole point of Dark Souls.
[editline]9th December 2012[/editline]
Now that you mention it, comparing it to a fighting game is interesting because to excel you need to remember the patterns and attacks of enemies well to counter their strengths and weaknesses, trading blows, dodging or blocking or retreating for a ranged attack similar to a fighter.
Hm.

actually in a sense I expected it to be slowish strategic combat :D Since people described it as such. Instead I got as you describe - attack patterns and how to counter them.
But yeah, I think most of my problems came from using a mouse and keyboard. And by the time I got the to try it with a controller, I was too fed up with the control scheme.
But I think the part that miffed me the most I thinkwas the target locking. I tried attacking an enemy in a corridor and couldn't get the attacks to not hit the corridor's wall without locking on to the enemy.
I'm not saying it was a bad game. I liked the idea of it, the ssetting and a number of other stuff. I just really disliked the way controls worked.

You really should give it another go while using a controller.

Third-person shooter camera controls would have felt more natural, but wouldn't have fit the level design at all since you'd be screwed if surrounded. Now you can at least flail wildly everywhere if you're in a pinch.
I'd love it if target lock was replaced with a button that makes the game control like a TPS though, changing the camera angle yourself while still enabling strafing would help in boss battles a lot (you'd be able to see the environment more).

Difficulty was one of the main selling points of Dark Souls. They wouldn't give that up.
Difficulty was one of the main selling points of Dark Souls. They wouldn't give that up.
Well they did talk about making an "Easy" mode and stuff on that level, but even then if it was just that, I'd be fine. It'd obviously be entirely avoidable if you wanted the same challenge as the previous game.
Difficulty was one of the main selling points of Dark Souls. They wouldn't give that up.
Are you sure about that? They want The Elder Scrolls crowd. They're not talking what's best for the game right now, they're talking what they can do to increase sales. A strait forward story and strait forward levels.
It's not even difficulty all that much that worries me here, it's the word strait forward. I didn't play Dark Souls to go down 1 hallway leading leading to "the first boss" to go down a second hallway leading to "the second boss". I like the freedom a little bit of complicated level design offers you.
