PC piracy survey results: 35 percent of PC gamers pirate

I think if piracy in creased it would be good in the long run
idk if im gonna get banned for this, but I pirated the sims 3 with expansions because it's outrageously expensive and never goes on sale.
for real doe i honestly couldn't give a damn about most of the DLC companies pump out
I bought mass effect 2 like multiple times on different systems so don't expect me to shell out more smackers for your mako mission pack and waifu skins

I mean, the game itself was in a Humble Bundle and it came with a stuff pack and one expansion.
But all the other ones? Fucking ridiculous. Especially when the game has fucking microtransactions, too.
I feel like a good chunk of piracy of video games would go away if companies would just release demos again.
I pirated Wolf TNO because it's blocked in Israel with no exceptions like censored version for Germany.
But you get to slaughter Nazis and save the world. What's the point in blocking/censoring that?
The German version basically just had the swastikas censored since showing those (except in educational context) is forbidden by law here.
I understand that, that's fair.
Demos were a great thing. Great for testing if the game ran on PC and if it was something you liked.
Sometimes I still pirate games for that reason.
I guess STEAM refunds now help but its still not as good as a free demo.
Piracy is still mostly a service problem. Enough example were given here already. (Lack of demos, more common ripoffs or broken games, old games not available otherwise etc.)

This was just an anonymous poll/survey. The Ubisoft thing was them pulling numbers out of their asses because the PC port of that years Assassin's Creed sold terribly. They had no idea how to read statistics from torrent sites, so they just picked "95%" because of high numbers. They didn't consider that people might have stopped a download, how it might not have run on a system or even bought it afterward. That number was pure "it's not OUR fault our barebones port didn't sell well".

Who knows. Yet Wolf 3D and RTCW are totally fine.

We have neither of those here, at least not on Steam :v:

Were they censored because of violence? Those rules have been relaxed a lot here lately.
probably something to do with how the nazis were depicted in that game
seems to me that the newer ones had a much more closer to home portrayal, which could be the reason why they're blocked
Release demos and don't punish people who buy your game with awful DRM's.
I've pirated some of my brought games, because of buggy and shitty DRM protection.
If you want to stop pirates, make a better offer that the pirates can't beat.
My best example of a game that I enjoyed as a kid but couldn't install after a certain point -
Spore.
It had SecuROM so it was limited to 5 activations, and opened you up to malware due to it using security flaws to operate, not to mention if I wanted to play it now on Windows 10 - can't do it because Microsoft patched what it used.
I think the trend is important (higher income = higher percentage that can afford):

I think it's interesting that "Refuse to pay" increases as income increases.
I think it's interesting that "Refuse to pay" increases as income increases.
I'm pretty sure it actually doesn't: These are percentages relative to the group of people who pirate games, so the graph is pretty misleading regarding the gradients.
Unfortunately I don't think it's possible to calculate the absolute percentage values only from this graph, since the question allowed more than one answer. A graph relative to the total amount of people asked in each group would be far more sensible in either case, since I'm pretty sure this one actually understates the decrease of 'Can't afford' and 'Too expensive' by a huge margin.

good demo's that is
just cause 2 demo tier
Resident evil hd remaster price is ridiculous and capcom refuses to do a sale on it

I can safely say that Just Cause 2's demo convinced me to buy the game. I don't think I would've, otherwise. It would probably have just flew right past my radar.

It's 3x cheaper than getting a new copy of the Gamecube version that it's based on, at least according to Amazon. You could get the original on PS3/PSP for like $6 though.

Demos really don't help for shit though. Due to their nature of being a vertical slice of a game, they may only show you the areas that don't actually suck ass, or the bit of story that is actually interesting. And missing the rest of the game doesn't really indicate how well the thing will perform, it'd be entirely possible that the one area used in the demo performs a bit better than others for example.
The Just Cause 2 demo comes up a lot, but honestly that area was one of the better ones in the game. A variety of terrain heights, various village types, etc. Most of the game was expanses of trees and nothing with a few villages dotted around. (didn't stop the game being badass as fuck though)
In this day and age there are better ways to find out if a game will run on your PC or if the thing is actually any fun. You have the entire internet at your fingertips after all, reviewers of various tastes (at least one will match you), benchmarking and troubleshooting out the butthole and lets players if you really want an extended look at the game before committing. Publishers are somewhat hesitant to fund demos now as it requires a bit of work to actually limit what the player can see without breaking it, when that could be put in to releasing within the deadline, AAA games despite being bigger than ever have still got the small timelines of a decade ago, shits tight bruh.

Capcom are just the worst. I'd love to get DMC4: SE, but they don't offer discounts if you own DMC4. That and they released DLC just to unlock the higher difficulties out the door. Which I can kinda get if you've beaten the game dozens of times. But fuck guys.

I would actually argue that that was a good choice for a demo. Since the point of a demo is to show you what's in the game then choosing an area like specifically because of the fact it's so varied makes it the logical choice, even if it's not technically an accurate representation of every area of the game.

I for one would much rather see how it performs on my system with my own eyes than see graphs of how it performs with x hardware.
The DOOM 2016 demo actually convinced me to not buy the game at first, and then buy it later on anyways. Back when I first ran the demo, the menu would run at 3 FPS for some weird reason, and I just decided to not bother seeing as I wasn't too interested in the first place. A bit later my friend told me they patched the terrible performance issues and after playing through the demo once without slowdowns, I instantly caved and bought the game (at a reduced price, mind you).
